As an Irish person, I can tell you that the movie is filmed on the most beautiful place in Ireland. Achill Ireland, Co Mayo. My favourite place in the world. You can drive onto it from the mainland. There are also shots from Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

Agree in full. My ex is from Mayo and I was blessed to spend many many beautiful times in Achill. Lucky to fall in love in Achill. It’s truly the last stop before heaven. Also I attended NUIG and got to Aran many times. Again beautiful beyond. I went to mass at the church in Inishmore.

This story couldn't have taken place in another time, because 1923 Ireland is absolutely a necessary context. The Irish Civil War was really frustrating. People who'd fought together to win Ireland's freedom were suddenly at war. The actual reasons had to do with who accepted the treaty that made Northern Ireland part of England and who rejected it. No one really won, though the stalemate resulted in the treaty being accepted after all. It was absolutely needless violence where best friends turned on each other overnight. So, yeah. The vistas and technology aren't really the reason to pick 1923.

  • @mkeerkens

I think what makes this film so moving is that the story is a microcosmic mirror to the Irish Civil War that is raging right across the bay from them, where fellow Irishmen go from kin to enemies overnight, who are harming themselves (like cutting their fingers off) in their fight to banish each other. So many layers of meaning in this movie come from the references to the war. That's why we end with the two man standing on the beach talking about the war, and about how there are wounds you can't come back from, which is so deeply sad. I just saw it and can't stop thinking about it, even getting teary eyed. Colin Farrell deserves an Oscar for his performance. That first scene where he gets rejected, the look of bewildered hurt in his face was heart-wrenching.

On the same day I watched this film, my boyfriend said he didn't love me anymore. He continued being happy, but I just wasn't part of his happiness anymore. "But you liked me yesterday ?" The incomprehension, denial, distress, anger, despair, resignation. You start questioning who you are. All the emotions I went through were so beautifully depicted in the film, with great accuracy. It truly blew me away.

Saw this last night. I think the film taking place at the time of the Irish Civil War is also key to understanding its purpose, themes, and messaging. I found it depressing, and did not like it for my own personal entertainment; but can also appreciate it as a wonderful and artistically attractive film. That’s entirely possible. We aren't always in the right place for a film and thats ok. We must also remember that not all films are meant to be "enjoyable". Sometimes great films can be uncomfortable and that can make it feel tedious to some. I think films are the perfect place to explore the dark, depressing, and tedious aspects of life. As we get to see beyond our own experiences and hopefully make us more well rounded and empathetic people.

I found the beginning to be great, the scenery so beautiful, the characters charming, the comedy laugh out loud funny, and then it gets SO dark and actually silly (chop off 5 fingers and just go out to the pub??). And then the little beloved donkey chokes to death on top of it all! It was hurtful, gut-punching, harsh, devastating, too much, after such a fun beginning. Ugh. I was angry and upset.

I thought they were going to reveal that Colin's character was a ghost. A ghost that was wandering around the town and the townspeople didn't mind having around since he just died. At one point, Brendan's character said he was going to play a certain song at his funeral. For certain reasons, he would no longer be able to do that.
Brendan's character didn't want to be his friend anymore because he was dead. He didn't want to be tortured by his presence. That is why he was willing to go to such extremes. It is a fantastical story, so I felt like this could've been a possibility.

As much as I love In Bruges, I would say pretty quickly that this is my new favourite. It hews a lot closer to the slightly lower stakes of McDonagh's theatre work, there's less of a reliance on the shock value of Ray's crudeness, as he's a prick to everyone around him, and I'd argue that the editing and mise-en-scene is even more well crafted in Banshees (even though In Bruges is unquestionably gorgeous). Both are brilliant, but I know which one I'm going to be recommending to friends first

*Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Batman, Tár, The Northman, and recently...*
*All Quiet on the Western Front*
quite a good year for movies (not the highs like *1982, 1994, 1999, 2014, or 2019 tho!!* but still great)

In the Mel Brooks movie, "The Producers", the 2 main characters are looking for a play that will guarantee to bomb on the opening night. If they were making The Producers now, they wouldn't choose "Springtime for Hitler", they would use Banshees.

I just finished watching this and wanted to hear someone’s thoughts whose job it is to think about movies. I’m not sure I like the ending, but it’s got so many good qualities. I had the good fortune to spend a couple days acting with Colin Farrell on his latest series, and he’s an absolutely delightful person. So happy to see him be so busy with interesting projects!

Any art medium should stimulate your thought processes; should make you exercise those brain cells that contribute to growth. Sure, action films are fun, but when a cinematic experience like The Banshees of Inisherin comes into existence and gives you a chance to wrap your mind around complex truths like how intransigence, pain and rejection can lead to war with all of its collateral damage, it should be understood as great art.

I didn't think Brendan Gleeson could he out-acted in a movie until Farrell did it in In Bruges. He then proceeded to do it again here. Imagine my shock when Barry Keoghan outdid both of them. It's a crime that Keoghan didn't get an Oscar.

A brilliant film. My favorite of 2022. Farrell is perfect, and the rest of the cast is outstanding. The ability of the writing to contain humor within the pain is difficult to do, but it’s done here. And then it’s an even bigger challenge to display those two conflicting emotions together on the screen. Farrell and Keoghan both do it so exquisitely in word and with just a look. Genius film.
Of course your Rings of Power addendum turned my stomach.

I came in expecting this movie to be a slow burn. Tons of buzz around it and the movie was in a lot of peoples top 10 list.
Just let me start off by saying, give me whatever these people were smoking.
This movie was a hard watch. The escalation of certain events was ridiculous too.
Only thing I’ll say about those movie is that it’s different so I’ll give it credit.

I really hope the success of this movie finally convinces Netflix to put up a better quality version of In Bruges. The current one (at least where I live in Switzerland) is like 720p and has terribly low volume with no subtitles so it's so hard to understand anything that's going on, and it's such a shame cuz it's such a great movie.

I mainly agree, but there was a lot of clumsiness in the second half. MM can really write lines, and the whole cast can really deliver them. The animals are great. See this play, but be prepared to be disappointed after the interval, then reflect that it's great in so many ways.

A Quick Synopsis that is not mainstream. Colm loves Siobhan and turns on Padraig when he discovers she is leaving. Remember, the job offer letter was opened in the post office. Colm used Padraig to get in proximity to Siobhan and abandons their false friendship. He mutilates himself as a desperate act of self-pity to garner sympathy and attention from Siobhan. It does not work. Innisherin is Ireland, it translates as the Island of Ireland, which is pretty obvious. The mainland with the civil war coming to an end is the bigger world, which is more attractive than the ongoing hellish war in Ireland. The film is essentially also a prison film, and characters cannot escape. Siobhan looks back at Padraig and you see him on a cliff as if the island is a fortress and the old hag is the evil prison warden. Hints of Papillon. Siobhan is the future, Padraig is the present and Colm is the past. Colm digs up a past that is self-destructive, inward, indulgent, in the Gaelic revival music. His pretence to acquired universal culture is corrected by a cultured Siobhan regarding the date of Mozart’s music. The hero of the film is Siobhan who escapes the island, Padraig is the masses caught up in a situation not knowing the actual truth. Dominic is a character who suffers reality under the skin of the cruel veneer of Irish society, with a legacy of corruption and abuse in the church etc. He has the magnificent line " There goes that dream" and kills himself as his love is lost to him. He had more guts than Colm, he declared his love and accepted his fate. Padraig will never know the truth, he just senses there is something wrong but lacks the moral conviction to change his circumstances. He writes false letters full of lies. He fools himself and pretends that by burning Colm:s house that he has done something. All he has achieved is added to the destruction of hope and a better future. Colm and Padraig becomes flip sides of the same coin. A film masterpiece. One for the ages. Greetings from Ireland, we know this shit.

So why after cutting off his fingers was he just in the bar playing with fingerless hands as if he hadn't just done that? The film alluded to something strange happening, as if the old woman has supernaturally cursed the island, only it turned out to be metaphoric? I didn't see severed fingers as a clever metaphor. I saw that as something sinister, like in a horror movie.
They did that for the sake of making the film *appear* more interesting than it actually was, and that is a problem a lot of modern films like this have. Over stylized, unrealistic scenes meant to entice audiences with no actual pay off.
