Thought you might like some info - twenty one pilots is Tyler Joseph (singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and producer) and Josh Dun (drums). They've been playing music together since 2011 and are from Columbus OH. They started out the old fashioned way, playing local gigs and building a fan base and self-recording/releasing music. First album under a record company was in 2013 and this song from 2015 was their first big hit and sent them into the mainstream. I'm 55 too and used to really only listen to post-punk, grunge and prog rock, and I am a huge fan of these guys. They have a lot of older fans so if you enjoy more of what you hear, you'll fit right in.

Welcome to Twenty One Pilots (T0P) reactions. Here's your crash course:
    1. They're one of the most dynamic bands to ever exist. They mix in all sorts of genres, and every song sounds unique. I enjoyed the first 4 songs I heard from them without realizing they were all from the same band.
    2. Tyler is a brilliant songwriter and arguably a genius. Lots of depth to chew on. Also, his unique voice holds up in live performances.
    3. T0P fans (the clique) show up in a big way for reactions. They're going to tell you there's a deep lore to the albums, with connected themes and symbols (like blurryface). That's true, but you don't need to dive into that right away, if at all. The songs stand on their own too.
    4. Start with some early music videos, Ode to Sleep, Car Radio, and Trees (live at the Fox Theater for the last one). That'll give you a good intro to why fans adore them.

Love these two guys so much. The lead singer plays piano, bass, and uke too. He writes all their lyrics and controls their vision to a T. So unique and really does whatever the heck he likes when it comes to their music and shows. Their album coming out in May wraps up a decade long story arc! We’re all waiting with bated breath. 😂. I suggest Ode to Sleep. It’s an older song but shows their origin story. I’ve seen them live many times and I’ve never seen a better show. And all this coming from someone who used to live and breathe bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Chicago, Neil Young, etc…and then some 80s and 90s alt rock. I’ve left a lot of that behind for twenty one pilots. 😂

These guys write all of their songs.
The first house belongs to Josh, the drummer's parents. The room is his room. Same with Tyler, lead singer.
All the adults are their parents, brothers and sisters.
They did 21 different handshakes. I counted them as they did them once cause I wasn't sure.
    These guys are extremely talented.
My favorites of theirs besides Stressed Out, are.....
Heathens, Chlorine, Ride (Voiceplay covered this), My Blood and Trees live at Fox Theater (a must to watch all the way to the very end).
I'm 64 and still have the mindset of a kid.
Those were the simpler and more fun days. You telling about your big wheel experience brought back a lot of memories.
When all the kids on the street played together or hung out at each other's houses for hours on end. We knew when the street lights came on it was time to come in or go home.
I had 3 older siblings and our neighborhood's favorite thing to do together at the end of the day was play Red Rover in front of our house because we lived in the middle of the street. We played for hours anytime of the year. Even in the snow
Snow was awesome for hide & seek and snow ball fight barricades.
We lived at the top of the hill so going to school in the winter was a lot of fun. Coming home wasn't though 😂.
Now I'm disabled so my daughter takes care of me.

Thank you, my friend for sharing such awesome memories! Reminds me of my childhood as well. All the kids hung out in my front yard and we used to make up tag games and just lie on the grass looking up at the clouds or the stars. Boy, did we take that time for granted! And yes, we were outside all day except Saturday mornings for the cartoons! I'd go back in a heartbeat!
I'm a caretaker myself. I the personal aide for my 91 year old mother-in-law who lives with us and my wife who is chronically ill and has been bedridden for just over four years. Take care of yourself, my friend! I'll see you in the comments on the next one!

Good morning Bill. New subscriber here. I’m a 49 year old male who listens to these guys everyday. Their music doesn’t get old. This song “stressed out” won these guys a Grammy for best vocal duo performance in 2017. I saw them in concert 2 days later in our hometown and was completely blown away. I walked out of the show thinking “holy shit what did I just witness” I tell people all the time that night changed my life. They are the best musical act I’ve seen since. Tyler(lead singer, bass, piano ukulele) all self taught on instruments. He writes all their lyrics, some are pretty deep. This was one of the big radio hits, if not the biggest. As you can see with 2.8 billion views. It’s a good song, but doesn’t scratch the surface. If you do more songs, I would recommend going from there Vessel album. Their first album under the record, label, deals a lot with mental health issues, which Tyler and Josh(drummer) both suffered from. Their lyrics are so impactful, and have actually saved. Many peoples lives. Almost every song from that album is about depression, anxiety, mental health, bad thoughts, and even taking one’s own life. Tyler reference is a lot that the nighttime is bad for him, and the daytime is better, because he has just slipped off all the negative thoughts he had that built up during the day. Anyway, I would recommend car radio, migraine, ode to sleep, or Guns for Hands. Appreciate your time reading this, looking forward to more.

Please feel free to browse me channel and check out some acts especially Ren, Chinchilla, and Asaf Avidan. But there are so many that are just brilliant! I am very happy to have TOP here. They are amazing! I appreciate the info and the recommendations. I take note of all things for the long journey ahead. There definitely will be much more! See you in the comments! 🤘❤️🤘

There’s a big crossover between Ren fans and TØP fans.. he even references them and this song stressed out in one of his song. Turning the mental health stuff that bothers so many people and into something positive sounding with magical lyrics is truly art. These guys do that. Also Chester Bennington of Lincoln Park fame was a huge fan of these guys and there are videos of him singing their songs.. pretty cool

My teenaged daughter introduced me to this band about a decade ago. She would play their music while in the car as I drove her everywhere. I loved the music, and the song "Car Radio" grabbed my soul and I jumped down the rabbit hole with two feet! These guys are brilliant! Know that there is symbolism, metaphors and meaning in everything -- the lyrics, the videos, the colors. Even the black on his hands and neck symbolize Tyler's insecurities in his singing and his writing, but also represents the control of Blurryface, also known as Nico, one of the Bishops of the lore. The lore has been going on though many years and multiple albums. You are late to the party, but it is never too late to catch up. They just released two videos that must be watched in order ("I am Clancy" and then "Overcompensate"). One helps to briefly explain the lore in 4 minutes, the second one is the first song off their new album which drops in May. I highly suggest some binge watching/listening. The next album, called "Clancy" will be the conclusion to the lore, so you won't want to be left out. You will enjoy the ride and will have a lot of material for reaction videos. I subscribed today hoping you'll join those of us down the rabbit hole.

So, Blurryface is an alterego of Tyler (The singer). There's a whole lore story revolving around their music that started coming out with the Blurryface album. Each of the symbols on the front represent a different "Bishop", and each Bishop represents a different mental illness, if I recall correctly.
Certain videos are lore videos, so they might not make sense without that background. But the order of the lore videos is Heavydirtysoul, Jumpsuit, Nico And The Niners, Levitate, Saturday, The Outside, then the newest song Overcompensate. There's also a video called I Am Clancy tthat gives a brief overview of the story. It's also confirmed that every song off Clancy(The new album) will be getting a video.
But yeah. T.O.P. is definitely worth the rabbit hole delve. They deal a lot with fighting against depression and anxiety and other mental illnesses in their music, and always with the message of "Stay Alive".

@@BemusingBill you're very welcome! And I will most certainly be there for the next one! And as you go, don't be too worried about figuring out specific meanings to most, if not all the songs. They're written as such to have different meanings to different people. So what you get from the song might be different from what I might, and both meanings could be correct. Same with the lore stuff. I agree with one of the other commentors, that the songs stand on their own, and knowing the lore isn't strictly necessary. But if the lore interests you, then believe you me. You'll have a lot of help making sense of it once the clique shows up.
Also, outside of the lore stuff, I've got some personal recommendations of my own. A few of them are ones that you'll probably see a lot of other people recommend too.
      By album, they are:
      Self titled:
      Implicit Demand for Proof
Addict with a Pen (UG studios location version.)
      Trapdoor
      Friend, Please
      Isle of Flightless Birds
(I put Trapdoor and Friend, Please in that specific order, as to me, they are a pair. One compliments the other as a sort of call and response, Trapdoor being first, the call, and Friend, Please the response.)
      Vessel:
      Ode to Sleep
      Migraine
      Car Radio
      Guns For Hands
      Truce
      Blurryface:
      Lane Boy
      The Judge
      Hometown
      Goner(fox theater version)
      Trench:
      Morph
      My Blood
      Chlorine
      Neon Gravestones
      Scaled And Icy:
      Choker
      No Chances
      Redecorate
      And a couple of asides:
The cover of Elvis's Can't Help Falling In Love
      The cover of MCR's Cancer

I spent the next month listening to nothing but TøP and was hooked for life lol. I’ve been to 3 of their shows, they’re absolutely incredible live.

Oh man, I’m here for this! TØP is one of my favorite bands ever. I subbed because of your Gorran Kendall reaction, but I’m so excited for you to delve into Tyler (vocals, writing, production) and Josh (drums).
Blurryface (which this song is on) is the first of their concept albums. Thematically, it’s about the character named Blurryface who represents Tyler’s anxiety, depression, and struggle with mental health. Between Blurryface and Trench, they literally disappeared from the public and announced Trench through an amazing online scavenger hunt type thing. In Trench, they give Blurryface a name as a separate entity.
You have to watch Dema trilogy videos in this order: Heavydirtysoul (on Blurryface), then Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and Levitate (all from Trench).
My favorite songs and of theirs: Car Radio (absolute favorite because music is also my escape mechanism), Lane Boy, Not Today, and Neon Gravestones. You’ve probably already heard Heathens and didn’t know it was them. You HAVE to react to Trees (Live) and the Ode to Sleep music videos, too!
They just released a new single called Overcompensate to announce their new album, Clancy, also set in the world of “Trench” and the dystopian city of Dema. They did a cryptic scavenger hunt thing with this one, too.
Overall, they don’t just make music but are also world builders and storytellers.

@@BemusingBill You’re in for a TREAT! 🫶 And if you get through the Trench Dema trilogy, and you’re hooked on the world and story… the order you need to continue: Chlorine (it’ll make sense later, not necessary for story but it gives some insight), then off Scaled and Icy album: Shy Away (livestream version), Saturday, and The Outside.
THEN: watch the “I am Clancy” summary of the story so far, THEN their new single “Overcompensate” which is leading us into the new album out on May 17, you’re literally popping in as we fans are analyzing the shit out of the weird and jarring Scaled and Icy album which deviated from the expectated sound of tøp to figure out how it fits in now that we know for sure it actually did. (They even mentioned an older album, Vessel, in the lead in summary of the new album and I’m over here freaking out that we’ve all missed something for a decade!)

    • @katstorm13
      @katstorm13 6 місяців тому

@@BemusingBill I suggest reacting to the "Trench trilogy" in order, Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and and Levitate- in order. Even if you don't delve into the lore, the overall story theme can be summarized down. Technically, Heavy dirty soul comes before Jumpsuit. And after Levitate, because it's a loop basically describing how you can climb your way up out of depression and anxiety, but eventually might get sucked back in.

@@knightspearhead5718 yay, 2010 and boy band sounds like terrifying combo. Probably more younger people are familiar with them.

I wouldn’t consider them a “big band” first off there are only 2 members. And only 1 sings. They are a duo, and definitely worth checking out. I’m a 49 year old male who’s daughter to him to there concert 8 years ago and was completely blown away. Been a huge fan ever since. My fav music act today hands down

I listen to a fairly wide variety of genres, although the only metal would be Industrial metal (Ministry, NIN etc.) Industrial, EBM, goth, alternative rock, post punk are probably the genres I listen to the most.
I'm a few months shy of 52, never had a favorite band, but shortly after hearing tøp in 2018 I got pulled in and now I do!
They're touring starting this fall, and I highly suggest seeing them. Out of 100+ concerts I had a top 10 but no single favorite. The first time I saw tøp went straight to number 1, and was one of the best nights of my life.
Tickets are steep, although cheaper compared to a lot of big name artists. I always do the pit, although at the back, because I'd rather have elbow room and enjoy the music than get smushed in. Back of the pit is still roughly center court or back a little from there, and can see the whole stage just fine.
If you do decide to go, I would suggest waiting awhile to get tickets especially if you have to get them from a reseller. They'll charge an arm and a leg now, but prices will drop. There are always tickets left on resell sites even the week leading up to the show.

Loved your reaction. I think they are musical geniuses, so think you may enjoy listening to many more of their songs. They are genre bending, some of their songs have several change ups in the one song. I’d think you would enjoy reacting to Ride next, probably their second biggest hit after this one. They sing a lot about mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Many of their fans will tell you that their music saved their lives. Subscribed for more!
