The blast engineer for hole in the rock was my great great grandfather Benjamin Perkins.
Ben was a born in the UK doing mining jobs starting at the age of 8. He started working with dynamite not long after.
In the UK he joined the LDS church and took a train to Salt Lake. He was called by church leaders to help colonize southern Utah. He took his wife and went with the wagon party down to the area where they’d create hole in the rock.
There’s not a whole lot of information on how he created the hole in the rock in terms of engineering and design. Ben didn’t have an education since he was working in mines his whole life, but he designed the suspended tracks and perfectly measured the blast holes to allow the tracks that’d allow the wagons to go down the cliffs and gullies. They used ropes and pulleys to bring the carts down safely.
I guess you could say I’m proud. Haha!

You did the #1 thing IMO, you didn't go alone. That shelf road onto Grey Mesa has some pucker factor. The history of the Mormon pioneers that crossed that route is almost unbelievable. Our ancestors were hardier folk than people today.

That looks like an amazing time. We are in the process of uprooting our lives leaving New York and coming out to Utah. I am looking forward to trips like the one you just did.

That had to be so much fun Rudy! Janelle got some serious seat time in too, well done Janelle! Rudy you found the best hole to drive in! Glad it all worked out well. You weren't alone and running out of gas was not the worst thing that could have happened. glad Otis had a great time too!

Really enjoy watching you and your dad's channel, but I am always amazed at how unprepared you both are when leaving civilization. Leaving with half a tank of fuel? Sketchy! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Afflicted with the genetic predisposition to neglect the fuel tank. That was quite a pothole you almost lost the Rudicon in. Here in Michigan we don't have a problem with potholes that size. Here we make 'em so you can drive in one side and out the other. Great video Rudy!

It was reckless to take this challenge without enough fuel. That being said you had off camera assistance. It made for a GREAT vid! Thanks!

Great adventure that I need to add to my list of trails to do soon. Why didn't Brent just use his extra fuel to pour in to your tank? Great video - really like the way it is being presented. Did everyone sleep inside their Jeeps? I didn't see tents set up anywhere.

Refueling with a rotopax isn’t good television. Neither is filling up at that Chevron. Or driving around VW Bug sized holes.

I couldn't really see the front of Brent's Jeep before he was towing Rudy, or I just didn't notice, but the decals he's got on his windshield and fenders prove him to be a man with a terrific sense of humor.
