Its not the portfolio who got rejected, actually this passed the skills test, it was the oral exam that did not pass, so don’t feel miserable guys, the title os a bit misleading
Heyyy, I am trying to build a portfolio to get educated into this course. Can you guys help me what exactly do I need to build and put in my portfolio to get selected in universities as really I'm a new student in this branch
@@ryuno4082hello ! I only know for french schools cause I only wanted to apply in my country . .. but I think it really depends on the school in general. I would say you have to be good in everything at least a little bit : background/Figure drawing /characters/storyboard/illustration/animation and u can have a specialty. Cause you will have to do a bit of everything at least in the beginning.
@@celiaberland37Hey Celia, i’m currently doing my bachelors in Brussels… why don’t you check it out? There have plenty of unis, the application and entrance exams are far more forgiving than schools like Gobelins and lots of French people live here! It’s also not too difficult when commuting to and from Paris.
I was rejected aswell on the oral test, but they never told me what was wrong, it was super sad to me, now whatching this level made me feel interested on what they accept. Thanks for sharing im a huge fan of your work!!
If you asked for it they should send it to you in September. As I was already a student they accepted to tell me face to face what was wrong I'm really sorry to hear that 🥹 hope that if you really want it you will find the will to do it again. It's not like the bachelor few years ago, you don't have to go in Paris to pass the test on paper. So it can be easier to try again !
im not surprised you were rejected after being outspoken about sexism in the industry and the school’s own participation in it. but i am glad you said it and we can all see that they are the ones who missed out on an incredible student. i love your work, it has such a dreamy quality.
I really love this portfolio! I feel like "lack of personality" is such a cheap excuse for them to dismiss you. Goodluck on whatever you choose to do next !
I Hope you don’t feel too sad about being rejected because this portfolio is really incredible and I love the way your style is so changing, like it’s not only one basic aesthetic everyone has now. It’s really unique ! Keep animating because I can tell that’s something you love doing
Thank you so much ! My goal is to be able to animate ''realistically'' in any style or character design and also be able to have a style that can be recognized for cartoony, stilysed, semi realistic and realistic characters ... I'm still searching and improving :) I like to adapt my style depending on the project I work on
Courage !
After looking at other portfolios I have come to the conclusion that the school might have realized they don’t have much to teach you, I’ve always had a passion for animated works, both from professionals and self taught, and I can say for a fact your work is fantastic. You’ve got a good sense of weight in your animations movements, you clearly understand that smoother animation (aka, having more frames) is not necessary in every instance of movement, your turnarounds are incredibly consistent, and your concept sheets are great! My only criticism is that there not much here to suggest you can adapt to other art styles, an important part of being a professional animator is having the ability to adapt to the styles being used for the animated projects your applying to, many of the animations shown here, while diverse, fall into very similar styles of art, furthermore, most of the humans fall into similar body types, my advice would be to practice different body shapes and styles that fall outside your comfort zone. You’re doing a wonderful job, keep going!
Thank you for your review ! It's precisely what they criticized, the fact that they could definitely see I was able to adapt to other art styles (some of my exercises were done with a preexisting model sheet , aka the human walk cycle, the animation sequence with moomins and the nana lypsinc). Tho they said I didn't show any personal style 🗿 . Also it's quite confirmed they didn't take me for personal reasons cause I made a teacher that they liked fired by saying what he did..... You can see the whole story on my Instagram account on the highlights. I made a long comic about this story :) The teachers were supportive of my case, they didn't understand . The person who judge me at the oral has no art knowledge or animation experience. I got a administration person at my oral. (Which is also the reason why generally speaking , the selection is so random)
The problem is that people believe that the selection is done by people who know about animation, and it is not the case all the time . I know I was a student there during 3 years
Thank you ❤❤❤ Well actually I would answer portfolio that look like mine but it sound pretentious. ... Well maybe in the future my accepted classmates will share their portfolio I would recommend to try to find the account of people who got accepted through the tags in the Gobelins insta page under the last Annecy movies (mexico)
I don't see it lacking anything at all, it shows a specific artistic vision in my opinion, but well, I'm not the one professionally reviewing art at Gobelins lol

OH MY GOODNESS! That duel in the snow was your making? I hope you do well, a rejection is a simple form of discovery within yourself, not something to self doubt!
Thank you for sharing the reel and the feedback you received for it, it is very informative in seeing the level such schools require for their students upon entry. Animation/vis-dev/storytelling really is such a deep topic, that requires so much nuance and can be explored, and skills refined, so much. I only hope one day I can understand what is good and be able to somehow carry that spark into my own work and portfolio.
❤ thank u for your comment it's really nice ❤ I promise it's not that unreachable that it looks like, and if you work every day with passion you will succeed to have a level that will enable you to do what you like , it just takes some time , work and perseverance ❤️
This is exquisite! I can't believe this got rejected. In particular, I loved the sequence of the rider with the wolf. It looked, to my eyes anyway, absolutely professional quality!
Honestly, seeing the level of animation work from Gobelins students always outstand me! I currently am pursuing a bachelor's in Digital Animation at KSU and the senior work there doesn't even come close to this level!
I don't think you need the master's program. I think you need to be working on the next big feature film of 2024! This is veteran levels of professional work!
This is a beautiful portfolio, it shows versatility and also personality, it's just a bit more subtle and feminine than most styles favoured for kids' shows these days. I think the Gobelins final films can probably be important in launching a career and it's sad you're missing out on that opportunnity but I think you will do well without this school, don't let this stop you!
Everything looks amazing ! At first I thought it was for the bachelor and I was more than shoked that you were rejected, and now that I saw in the description that it's for the master course, I don't know what to think anymore because I don't know what level they expect but damn that's already so good I don't know if you really need the school at this point ! I'm rambling but keep going, your work is amazing !❤
I know it is a bit stupid but you shouldn't consider this reel like something you should'' do better'' to enter. I think on a really technical aspect you can have less skills and be chosen by the examinators... They admit that they do it more about the personality than skills when it come to the oral and that they don't follow the point sheets .... 😅 they just like or not like u... it is really random. Also some of your jury they don't draw, and the others can not have links with Gobelins. Depends on your jury.... you have to be luck to be interviewed by the actual masters animation teachers who will judge you for your skills....😅 I said it in more details in another answer (and what is following is copy paseted from another answer hahah ) but I think the personally hated me for being too outspoken about feminism/sexism in animation and I told them they were not good in having some gross teacher who did bad stuff u know ... they loved him tho cause famous 😩 I also did some presentation and organized some sensibilisation debates with directors around these themes in the school....they probably were enough of that 😑
@@celiaberland37 ??? Did he do any s**ual harr**ment behavior or something similar? I read somewhere the school made their decisions on the selection not fully based on assessing potential skills but also on unrelated aspects as well (politics, finance, international students??) @@BuggySticky well you're exactly write about the unrelated policies. Have seen a lot of people with a very average reel get in for Masters there. This is definitely something else - cause for the rejection (unless they were taking only a bunch of animation gods that year, jeez it's only a masters course)🥴

everyday i find more reasons on why i won't get accepted to Gobelins, i don't even have a finished portfolio. Yours is just amazing! Just use this rejection as motivation to get better
I just watched an accepted portfolio. I'm currently getting my BFA in animation and I personally think the quality of your work is so much better. I can see you in visual devlopment
Wait no way, I’ve actually seen your work online before and I was completely blown away at your masters work. I’m curious to know why they even rejected you in the first place. Did they at least tell you? Cause if you out of all people didn’t get into the masters degree program then I sure as hell am not 💀
Well they said I looked pretentious and not nice to work with. Plus they thought my work was lacking maturity and artistic / narrative value. ... I "talked too much " during the oral exam 😅 Basically they just didn't like my face. Cause they said : we don't really respect anything with points and all, we think we can distinguish someone who will be good worker than someone who will be bad. .... By talking with him for 20 min. (Coming from a woman who didn't draw btw, who was my jury). It's really disapoiting cause I had friends who wanted to work with me for the grad movie and apparently everyone is satisfied with my skills and I don't think I would have been a catastrophy to work with 😅. But well they SAW it though me .... So they must be right. ... I think the real reason of my rejection lies in the fact I didn't accept sexism at school and I told them about gross behavior of some people they liked.... (Teacher) and it was not making a good effect..... U know, criticizing the school... But I guess it's on me 😅

@@celiaberland37it's interesting isn't it. It's like they're using their reputation of being a prestigious school to be petty. Like what does "not enough personality" even mean?? It's ridiculous. They basically just want only professionals to go to their school. What's the point if you already have enough skills to work in the industry? I was thinking "what a dream it would be to go to gobelins" but now seeing the rejected portfolios, it makes me think that they're pretty judgmental over tiny things (which is of course why they're such a good school but it seems like it could get toxic at times)
@thelitterbx4526 well actually it is not that good. I was there for 3 years and the exercises they give are good , the teachers (not all the teachers tho) are great but everything else is quite bad. Coucou !
@@celiaberland37 This is ridiculous. Your work is beyond skillful and polished. There's no way they are giving you such bullshit feedback. Don't take their words too seriously! I wish you all the best in the future.
Really makes me wonder how the process works cause... everything here looked professional af AND a number of these I wanna know more about the stories so... seems like more than enough personality. Kinda makes me feel like they're looking for a "Chorus Line" sort of group where everyone for sure has "personality" (which... super freaky movie, I recommend). Just means you've learned all you need to from them and you're ready to find your place for your art.
Don't lose the identity and sincerity of your own work because of schools and "the industry". The rent has to be paid, but hopefully the aforementioned doesn't ever happen.
Hi, I just came across this video. Thank you for sharing your reel and your video presentation. Do you think there's any possibility that they didn't admit you because you were applying for the international master's program?(i'm guessing you are french if not sorry for assuming) I've seen some other reels from accepted applicants, and I don't want to be mean or anything, but some of those reels were lacking in quality, compared to yours, at least. Yet, they were still accepted.
Hello ! No I don't think so, cause there is a french class too and I have a very acceptable level in English (with two English speaking boyfriends hahaha) also I was in the international class in bachelor already. And there was not enough french students from the bachelor who wanted to go to the master to fill an entire class :v I said it in more details in another answer but I think the personally hated me for being too outspoken about feminism/sexism in animation and I told them they were not good in having some gross teacher who did bad stuff u know ... they loved him tho cause famous 😩 I also did some presentation and organized some sensibilisation debates with directors around these themes in the school....they probably were enough of that 😑
You did very well but do remember... teachers bend over backwards for something original and thoroughly worked on. Some of these I haven't seen before but honestly you're probably right about the story telling. Honestly this is why I never went to art school...
ehh... i did the masters at gobelins, your work is good enough to go straight to the job market (in france it's a bit rough right now, but keep trying) unless you really want yo do your own short film
As an animator I can say your works are really good. But maybe more essential works with Time charts for the plasticity of the animation could help you. Right now, I believe your are more than fit for an assistant, but maybe improve on the spaces and Times can be the new path that your animation needs.
I went to a competitive undergraduate program for painting and printmaking, and they straight up told us not to apply there for a masters and to go out and apply to other schools to find different critique, insights, and environments to create in. Maybe go for another school if you can. They might be able to teach you something Gobelins didn't.
Hello , thank you very much ♥️ yes, I was art director on the last short they shared :) I was in bachelor 3 rd year. I did the illustration on the thumbnail basically 😗 I didn't make it to the masters tho 🥹
What an obnoxious and pretentious reason for rejecting you. These are stunning, I would totally watch a short film from you, or if a show had your style on netflix I'd be delighted. You did such a good job capturing classic animated movies too, like the last unicorn or the hobbit with the effects you used, masterful.
Why....??? This is ridiculous It makes me angry and confused seeing this situation. Just so ridiculous. What are they looking for other than skill level?
As the rejection was suspicious I suspect it's because I was not accepting certain gross behavior coming from a teacher they loved (cause famous) long story. I think they don't really like being criticized ... This school. Tho a lot of students are unhappy and disappointed. Especially recent years with the new classes. Not enough teachers , no money.... And also administration treating students like s***. It's still gives u a level... But mostly cause u surrounded with talented students.
I answered I like when I movie is poetic and I gave the example of the last movie I watched in theatre at the time : aftersun . I said I like when a mood is created without dialogue and I talked about the importance on details and music
I don't know I can do a list, evey movie is different, but you can definitely tell that the way to tell a story is different in terms of directing from a movie to the other
" is ur jacket a reference to hunter X Hunter" haha lmao. Im pretty sure the answer to that should always be yes. This reel is good though probably not that much else to learn doing a masters if you already did undergrad. Although I get be able to be in that study bubble to focus & improve skills without life getting in the way. Meh F em.
Hahaha Sadly it was not It was more like a leather jacket with green diamonds like a bit clown core . It's more because I'm a fan of a certain band haha but I guess it was wrong answer indeed 🥴 Thanks for your support ♥️🤗 it's really appreciated I am working a tone so I get better even without them !
Based on your edit, it's clear that you can't take criticism very well. A quarter of your reel is other IPs which means that these pieces don't show who you are as an artist or how you develop characters and worlds. While you show this in later pieces, the fact remains that it puts you behind in these aspects which is reinforced because you were then told what your portfolio lacked. Even though in the industry you are often working off of a specific model or design, studios still want to see your flexibility and creativity as an artist. You weren't required to include these pieces in your reel, because many other accepted reels do not have copyrighted characters in them.
Please inform yourself about Gobelins before criticizing . The character are copywrited because during lessons it is REQUIRED to have copywrited characters. You are criticizing Gobelins not me then. The reel you seen were not from people already in the school like me. Gobelins is an applied art school, a technical one . We don't do experimental . I've been studying there for 3 years. Some people I know who got into the masters don't even do design, they just do animation. The movies in the end are done by teams and are no autor movies done alone. If you are interested in my case, they check my comic I did on my Instagram highlights. I guess you were accepted in Gobelins or you are a professional of the animation world to criticize so harshly the work I spent all my time doing for 3 years. Humm no one except someone with a big ego would criticize the work of a student this way. You must be really skilled
The teachers were also shocked and found the jury was bullshit btw. Also, the jury I had had a personal problem against me, a big one. So I guess we have the reason why I'm mad :p
youre extremely talented and your hard work shows. I know colleges dont want to see fan art, that is probably a big part of the rejection based on what you said.
Hello , 😊 thank you very much ♥️ Otherwise I added an edit in the description to explain why I don't believe I was rejected for this reasons : you have to know that for all the exercises I did during the 3 years I studied in Gobelins (cause I already sttudied there for 3 years ) it was * compulsory * to use preexisting model sheets, it is part of the exercises they give us. If you look on the internet for Gobelins students exercices and demo reels you will find out we all use preexisting characters. these are not * fanarts * it's like, the closest thing you can find from professional work , cause in the industry no one will ask you for your style. They will ask you to follow the models the chara designer did, and it is very important for an animator to know how to do that. (I already worked on the industry btw and I can speak about that). It's also important in group projects, cause you have to animate in the style of someone else. for these exercises I did in Gobelins they gave me grades like : 16, 17, 18, 19 out of 20. Also, all my classmates who were taken for the masters had also a lots of characters not from them in their demo reels. So I don't think this is the reason of my rejection. actually I believe (and my teachers also confirmed) that my rejection was based on personal reasons, because I'm bothering the school *politically*. You can search in the comments for more details.
@@celiaberland37 In my honest opinion, I feel as long you have a strong enough portfolio, you don't need art school to get into the animation industry, or be realized as an animator. I hope you keep your spirits up, I don't like to see corporations and schools snuff out hopes and aspirations of animators. With the hollywood strikes and fight against AI and corporate abuse, I feel like we'll soon enter a new age of creator-first indie studios/projects. Maybe that's something to look out for imo

I’ve also applied for the master this year but I was at the bottom of the waiting list😢 It’s really confusing to me about what they are looking for. May I ask what questions you were asked during the oral exam?
Hello I'm really sorry :( I honestly think it's really random cause they don't take people that are really suited to choose. I think they do with the feeling more than with skills, and if they don't like ur face it's bad.... Anyway, as the people who try are all extra skilled, they San take anyone who was selected for the oral , it will be talented people. So why bother doing a real selection 🫠. I noted the questions : - introduce yourself - what type of storytelling do you like - how would you manage problems in a group project - what is important so a project go well - would you like to work on other people's projects - would you like to work with international people - was your change of class (french to international) intentional - what would you like to lean during the masters - is ur jacket a reference to hunter X Hunter (?wtf) - do you have any questions to ask us. Also they said they couldn't wait to see what I will do in the future cause I was very promising. But the school said the opposite when I asked about my rejection (not on the waiting list)
I feel quite angry cause I had really top grades during the 3 years even comparing the the class level. Like I don't know why I suddenly have no skills to their eyes anymore.

I was rejected aswell on the oral test, but they never told me what was wrong, it was super sad to me, now whatching this level made me feel interested on what they accept. Thanks for sharing im a huge fan of your work!!
If you asked for it they should send it to you in September. As I was already a student they accepted to tell me face to face what was wrong
I'm really sorry to hear that 🥹 hope that if you really want it you will find the will to do it again.

I'm still searching and improving :) I like to adapt my style depending on the project I work on
Seeing your work online throughout the years has been so delightful. I wish you all the best in the next chapter.✨
Thank you so much 🥹 it really means a lot ❤️
Courage !

I was a huge fan when I was a kid I had it on tape 🙃 📼
I made a long comic about this story :)
The teachers were supportive of my case, they didn't understand .
The person who judge me at the oral has no art knowledge or animation experience. I got a administration person at my oral. (Which is also the reason why generally speaking , the selection is so random)
The problem is that people believe that the selection is done by people who know about animation, and it is not the case all the time . I know I was a student there during 3 years
Now I’m so curious what they do accept! This is incredible and beautiful animation and art.
Thank you ❤❤❤
Well actually I would answer portfolio that look like mine but it sound pretentious. ...
Well maybe in the future my accepted classmates will share their portfolio
I would recommend to try to find the account of people who got accepted through the tags in the Gobelins insta page under the last Annecy movies (mexico)

❤ thank u for your comment it's really nice ❤
I promise it's not that unreachable that it looks like, and if you work every day with passion you will succeed to have a level that will enable you to do what you like , it just takes some time , work and perseverance ❤️
I really love your character designs, so beautiful, and interesting.
This is exquisite! I can't believe this got rejected. In particular, I loved the sequence of the rider with the wolf. It looked, to my eyes anyway, absolutely professional quality!
Incredible work. Gobelins standards are very high but you can surely be proud of your work.

This is veteran levels of professional work!
your Portfolio looks great fren! so sad it got rejected. hope u get accepted one day cos this looks amazing!
Omg you worked on “Annecy”? I loved that film! The art and colors were stunning and beautiful! I felt like I really stepped into that world 😍😍😍

Depends on your jury.... you have to be luck to be interviewed by the actual masters animation teachers who will judge you for your skills....😅

Awesome!🔥🔥🔥

Wait no way, I’ve actually seen your work online before and I was completely blown away at your masters work. I’m curious to know why they even rejected you in the first place. Did they at least tell you? Cause if you out of all people didn’t get into the masters degree program then I sure as hell am not 💀
Well they said I looked pretentious and not nice to work with. Plus they thought my work was lacking maturity and artistic / narrative value. ... I "talked too much " during the oral exam 😅
Basically they just didn't like my face.

As an animator I can say your works are really good. But maybe more essential works with Time charts for the plasticity of the animation could help you. Right now, I believe your are more than fit for an assistant, but maybe improve on the spaces and Times can be the new path that your animation needs.
Thank you for the advice, I agree 💯
I went to a competitive undergraduate program for painting and printmaking, and they straight up told us not to apply there for a masters and to go out and apply to other schools to find different critique, insights, and environments to create in. But what's the story behind the rejection?
As the rejection was suspicious I suspect it's because I was not accepting certain gross behavior coming from a teacher they loved (cause famous) long story.
Hello , 😊 thank you very much ♥️
Otherwise I added an edit in the description to explain why I don't believe I was rejected for this reasons :
you have to know that for all the exercises I did during the 3 years I studied in Gobelins (cause I already sttudied there for 3 years ) it was * compulsory * to use preexisting model sheets, it is part of the exercises they give us.
You can search in the comments for more details.
with these skills.. do you even need the school? :)
I mean, they said I was not skilled enough to enter 🫠😅
@@celiaberland37 In my honest opinion, I feel as long you have a strong enough portfolio, you don't need art school to get into the animation industry, or be realized as an animator. I hope you keep your spirits up, I don't like to see corporations and schools snuff out hopes and aspirations of animators. With the hollywood strikes and fight against AI and corporate abuse, I feel like we'll soon enter a new age of creator-first indie studios/projects. Maybe that's something to look out for imo
I'm curious, what school are you in right now since you were rejected by Gobelins? I'm also about to graduate highschool to be an animator, and Gobelins has always been an huge inspiration to me. And it kinda hurts me to see people such as you being rejected. :')
I finished my 3 years at Gobelins, now I was rejected for the masters exam, I just work at the cash register at an art supply shop and I do my personal stuff aside. Not super funny, but there's no job so...
You can follow me on Instagram if you're interested , I post sometimes about Gobelins.
Don't be too hard on yourself. It's not so hard to enter this school, they just had a personal thing against me.
@@celiaberland37 Aww, I wish you the best of the world and I hope everything will work out for you since you seem to be a nice and cool person though. Bonne chance ❤️❤️❤️
And I also hope you'll get to eat croissant again

1:04 Wasn't it a missing piece here thought?
I cut it out because it's a professional work for an actual short movie and I can't show it before it's released on the internet
@@celiaberland37 Oh, I see!
I’ve also applied for the master this year but I was at the bottom of the waiting list😢
It’s really confusing to me about what they are looking for.
May I ask what questions you were asked during the oral exam?
Hello
I'm really sorry :(
I honestly think it's really random cause they don't take people that are really suited to choose. I think they do with the feeling more than with skills, and if they don't like ur face it's bad....
Anyway, as the people who try are all extra skilled, they San take anyone who was selected for the oral , it will be talented people. So why bother doing a real selection 🫠.
I noted the questions :
- introduce yourself
- what type of storytelling do you like
- how would you manage problems in a group project
- what is important so a project go well
- would you like to work on other people's projects
- would you like to work with international people
- was your change of class (french to international) intentional
- what would you like to lean during the masters
- is ur jacket a reference to hunter X Hunter (?wtf)
- do you have any questions to ask us.
Also they said they couldn't wait to see what I will do in the future cause I was very promising. But the school said the opposite when I asked about my rejection (not on the waiting list)
Also .... I saw that every person in the class who was rejected (8 people including me) we were all girls. Only 4 of us weren't on the waiting list
I feel quite angry cause I had really top grades during the 3 years even comparing the the class level. Like I don't know why I suddenly have no skills to their eyes anymore.
im so sorry this is all incredible but im really not ised to seeing soviet animation being known outside of post soviet countries-- where the hell did u learn abt golden antilope???
Hahaha
It's because as a child I had a tape 📼 with a few Russian animated shorts on it and I really loved it. Ever since it happens I'm watching some of these old cartoons on UA-cam 🌝
There were french dub 🌝
Tbh I from my perspective I think they reject individuals if they are too good you have to be teachable I guess
They said I should come back next year cause I was not good enough 🥴 also it's the master's degree so it's ment for people Who already worked or did at least 3 years of studies. There is no age or lvl limit really.
The problem with many artists will always be egocentrism, to the point they will end up doing the oposite of contribution to the field they love. I can only praise the uploader for managing to bring extremely refined work to life, this is the kind of thoughtful and true art that should impact people, instead of shows produced by sons of millionaires...
Where did you study animation? Wood elf king have to know...
2 years in Marseille in a public school then 3 years in Gobelins :) I was accepted for the bachelor , they just decided to kind of fire me for the masters for some reasons... The teachers there didn't understand. I have doe a comic in my Instagram highlights 🥴 about it. You can find me there @celia.berland

It's amazing, wtf
How in the hell was this rejected?!
do they say why this got rejected? I'm curious about Goblelins' feedback, if this isn't good enough for them, I don't know what can
