I LOVE that they did all this just to return home for a moment. In the series, there's a much greater sense of danger and scavenging for survival, but the "plot twist" in this original animation, that they're going through all of this incredible effort just for a tiny reprieve of mental health, is really special.
Agreed! I love how the show takes us on this lush, alien, journey only to discover the protagonists are just trying to go back to where WE’RE at - even for a couple seconds. It’s thought provoking for sure!

I'm so sad that we aren't getting a renewed season. This series was so beautiful. I loved every bit of it, it had everything ! Its sad to see art like this not get enough funding for a renewal ! Joseph Bennett, Charles Huettner, you have created a beautiful series with impeccable storytelling and visuals !
Glad they toned down in the main show just how elaborate interacting with the ecosystem can be, as putting together this many bizzare steps in that Rube Goldberg machine way starts to stretch credulity! Still, fascinating to see the prototype for what turned out to be a truly amazing and special first season!
I think what they might be building up to is that the ecosystem is some sort of machine. Im pretty sure a line in the show is “Everything is like a puzzle here” and that line combined with multiple instances of them having to take advantage of the enviorment to come up with the perfect solution supports this imo.
Stretch credulity? What could be more realistic and accurate than lonely, stranded people devoting all of their time and energy to finding a way to connect with those they've lost and left behind? Literally what else would an even slightly properly socialized human in that condition be doing with their time? 😂
@@RosscoAW I think they mean moreso the organisms fitting together that well - though tbh, in this case it isn’t as far-fetched as they’re treating it, given each step is a self-contained instance that functions on its own and seems to only coincidentally aid the next step (i.e the blue bean is likely just something that causes an unpleasant sensation to force the bugfish to fly out of the water, the cyan slop is just to poison the popping tail thing, so on). It’s plenty plausible for desperate people to do crazy things, but it’s not as plausible for a planet’s ecosystem to provide a direct and tangible route to do something like that.
Because, even after all of that, it's enough to just get a taste of the humanity and lives they left. Just a moment's sensation. That's it? Is it worth it? It's all you've got. This spoke so very deeply to me, it's one of my most favorite stories and bits of artwork and the human imagination and condition. I return to it when I feel lost, it helps me remember the worth of the world. Thank you so very much for having the brains and imaginations that created this.

It's very much in line with the ideas of Station 11, although the show doesn't focus on these themes as much as the book does. What makes us human? How treasured would the experience of society be when viewed juxtaposed next to its absence? I haven't seen Scavenger's Reign yet, but the achievement within just this short film is wonderful, alienating and reassuring
I remember watching this when I was younger. When the trailer of scavenger reign came out, I immediately recognized it was from this short . Great work! I really hope this gets the recognition it deserves!

I saw this ages ago when I was still in college, just got done watching the series and I'm AMAZED! The animation, the story, the environment design, the diverse ecosystems, they're all so gorgeous and captivating. I love how none of the alien lifeforms are given any weird names, it helps them feel so much more unknown and bizarre. Watching this for the first time after seeing the trailer for the series on Max, and I have to say I’m impressed. The story, the art style, along with the setting being in space on a distant planet go together perfectly. Can’t wait to watch the full series! And right after the game Starfield is released? This animated series is astounding. It's imaginative beyond anything I've ever seen except real life and it doesn't hold back when showing the brutality of survival of the fittest. How does this video only have 191k views? It deserves millions! I've watched this video numerous times and I think about it all the time. Such a great story. So much world-building potential.
Scavengers Reign is my favorite show. Ever. It is exactly what I have always wanted from sci-fi animation. Every nail was hit square on the head in perfect order. This and the show it led to are masterpieces that should be preserved like the fine art they are.
F*ck. Reading this comment made me realize they haven't released it on my country. I thought it was releasing in 2024 or something, just discovered it's already out :c
Watched Scavenger's Reign all the way through...very imaginative. Reminded me of the film Fantastic Planet, from the early 70s. Looking forward to seeing more!!

Surprised as hell to find out this got a show, just found it on 'flix. Had no clue HBO picked it up last year; they clearly didn't advertise. 3 eps in & I love it; fingers crossed for a 2nd chance at another season
Absolutely insane to come back to this and see the progenitors of so many concepts and motifs and themes that would become larger and more captivating than I could have possibly expected. Also, proto-Sam and Ursula??? AMAZING
Wow, all of that insane detailed work, like a crazy dance, all to get a moment to breath the air and see the sights of home. The swell of music when that first building sprang into view moved me almost to tears. So excited for the full show.
Are you kidding, me? This short is already amazing and now I can finally see why Scavengers Reign is such a masterpiece. It was clear to me since the first minute that the show was made with a lot of passion. This short justs confirms it. Hope to see more about this universe you guys created.
I saw the series first, then saw there was a short that came out before…so here I am, enjoying more of this beautiful animation. I hope someone picks it up for a second season, it was that good. The Moebius inspiration I saw right away, the Nausicaa inspiration I saw after reading about it.
Came here before watching the show. Amazing work! The world feels unique and alien. And that drastic contrast between Vesta Minor and Earth in the end!
TODAY'S NEWS IS AMAZING, Y'ALL! I've been a fan of this since I stumbled across it on Vimeo in 2017, and am already counting the days to the premiere. Congratulations!
Our family just finished this series on Netflix and we are shook! We binged the whole thing! I'm telling eveyone we know on all our social media to watch this immediately. Is there anyway a campaign could get Netflix to bankroll yall for a second season? This was an experience! BES was beautiful, but the high concept world building and character arcs we got from yall in SR were stellar and y'all should have won the award in our opinion! THANK YOU for the love yall put into making this. I will be thinking about this story for a very long time, never forgetting it. I hope we get more from yall but if not, thank you for the satisfying conclusion we did get! This was surreal and stunning!
Thank you Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner. In addition to the monetary recognition for your work, please know that you have touched the imagination, feelings and joy of your work in the series you created. Please let us know if a second season is planned. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
You guys fucking rock. I loved your series, and this short feels so crazy knowing it came out in 2016. Thanks for scaring the shit out of me with something so beautiful.
This short, and your show, are honestly the only two cinematic experiences to capture what might be the absolute strangeness, beauty, horror, and bizarreness of another planet. It is the most (potentially) accurate depiction of an alien ecology, if not taken a few knowingly steps too far in the name of watchability and fun. In most every other sci-fi show that I can think of off the top of my head, the types of dynamics are generally similar to what happens on earth, just with gorgeous and fantastic window dressing. Predator/prey, parasite/sufferer, egg-layer/incubator, etc. Truly sublime in the purest definition of the word. Please, please make more! You and your team are so gifted!
Hi Charles, I just wanted to say thank you to you and your team for making such a breath taking masterpiece with Scavenger's Reign. I heard how it took years for you guys to create everything and well, it was more than worth it in the end. I haven't felt this wonder in witnessing something new when watching sci-fi since I was a kid and Scavenger's Reign made me feel that again. I'd go as far as to say that there's always a place in my heart for Scavenger's Reign for the years to come. Thank you. Just, thank you. I also heard that the possibility of season 2 has to depend on whether the viewership of the show reaches a point where it demands a next season, but in any case if it doesn't, if your team ever decides to create even comics or novels you'll be sure to know that there are plenty of people dying to support Scavenger's Reign's story no matter what shape or form its in. Regards
wow, i watched the series (one of my favorites), but never the short until now. i love that the only sounds are those of nature. i love even more that every step of the mission shows the diversity of the flora and fauna (and also that none of it's directly copied in the series), and the goal is never clear throughout, honestly it kept feeling like they were trying to accomplish some feat for the purpose of survival. but the ending is sublime. they know they'll never return, and don't even have any sort of device to play back recordings. they have to go through extreme measures just to capture a glimpse of what the people back on (i'm assuming) earth take for granted. i love this and the series, and love even more that they have entirely different storylines and outcomes.
If you havent seen the show, i cant stress enough how amazing it is! Creatures that truly feel other wordly. All the characters feel so grounded despite being somewhere else. Idk just a fantastic work of art ❤🎉
I would be very , very happy about a 2nd season. The outro and foreshadowing was also really promising. If somehow possible please make it happen Charles :)
Scavengers Reign was particularly amazing and refreshing. It's not a sci-fi show cliché. It's something else. I was absolutely delighted watching this show. Ursula's discovery inside that labyrinth was fascinating, beautiful and a little sad. I'd love to watch a second season.
Incrível como o curta não tem uma sequer palavra, mas diz mais que muita produção falada, a arte é incrível e a criação deundo é simplesmente hipnotizante estão de parabéns!
Scavenger's Reign feels revelatory in a way that only a foundational work can be. It is a monumental triumph of animation, science fiction, and storytelling wrapped into a most imaginative tale. An unending cascade of kudos to all involved. I hope we are fortunate enough to see more. Thank you.
Isn't the point of this whole video to treasure what we have? It looks like people would do anything to experience even the most mundane parts of their past
This was AMAZING! Beginning gave me some 80s Anime cinema vibes. I'm guessing some of your inspiration comes from that scene? Gonna share this with my fans cause this needs more attention
Holy shit dude! You assembled the animation dream team for this one! I love the concept of showcasing all the completely alien ways you would interact with non-earthian lifeforms! I feel like you guys took a video game fetchquest and got crazy weird with it! Fucking incredible!
I LOVE that they did all this just to return home for a moment. In the series, there's a much greater sense of danger and scavenging for survival, but the "plot twist" in this original animation, that they're going through all of this incredible effort just for a tiny reprieve of mental health, is really special.

One of my favorite animations from one of my favorite animators, remember this from highschool. The fact it has a show now is insane, all the best.
Hats off to those who designed all these creatures
I can see why Scavenger's Reign came out as a masterpiece work
This is now one of my favorite shows, I love the world everyone created

Scavengers reign and this short are literal masterpieces, actual art. Thank you so much for bringing this to us
How does this video only have 191k views? It deserves millions! I've watched this video numerous times and I think about it all the time. Such a great story. So much world-building potential.
Exactly! How come this doesn't have more than a million views? And the trailers for the upcoming series is also criminally underwatched.
8 months later, and it's at 708k. It increased significantly, but it should still be in the millions. One of my favorite animations.
Scavengers Reign is my favorite show. Ever. It is exactly what I have always wanted from sci-fi animation. Every nail was hit square on the head in perfect order. This and the show it led to are masterpieces that should be preserved like the fine art they are.
The first three episodes of Scavenger's Reign have been amazing, can't wait to see where this goes!
- new animation style
- new creative fauna
- new creative universe
- smart and relatable character
I love this show.
To Charles Huettner and Joe Bennett
You guys are complete masterminds, beautiful work. Congrats on making something so interesting and trippy.
Scavengers Reign is a masterpiece!!! Joseph Bennett & Charles Huettner - thank you guys)))
This is the best and most original show I've seen in such a long while. Sublime! Thank you!
So incredibly cool how this became a serie that will forever be in my memory. So much care, criativity and imagination.
Thank you for making such a special creation. You deserve all the success and I hope more people lay eyes on your production. Amazing, just amazing!!
Scavengers Reign was the best animation I've seen in years. Love the pacing and fully realised ecosystem. Savage yet peaceful.
I love stuff like this where nothing makes sense but there's some scinence to it
I'm here after watching scavengers reign. What an absolute ride. Amazing work.
i was just recommend this video after watching the official teaser from the “MAX” channel and i’m astonished at how beautiful it looked!
i’m proud of you guys and hopefully we get to unravel this intriguing universe y’all created through multiple seasons!
Sir, I was moved, stirred, amazed and impressed by this series, and wish there was much more.
just finished the show. this was amazing to see right after it.
A perfect example of “show, don’t tell” done right.
This is the most peculiar, artful, and pleasingly interesting clip I’ve ever seen. The soundtrack is really good.
I saw the series first, then saw there was a short that came out before…so here I am, enjoying more of this beautiful animation. I hope someone picks it up for a second season, it was that good.
The Moebius inspiration I saw right away, the Nausicaa inspiration I saw after reading about it.
Absolutely incredible. Sound design was immaculate, wow
This was surreal and stunning!
wonderful from start to finish, thank you all for your work
I just watched all the show in one day. What a masterpiece , im speechless
The fact that this found me naturally after having watched the show is astounding
Thank you Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner. In addition to the monetary recognition for your work, please know that you have touched the imagination, feelings and joy of your work in the series you created.
Please let us know if a second season is planned.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Wow, didn't realize how many years in the making this was- just saw the new trailer! Can't wait to see it on HBO
Come here after watching Scavenger’s Reign. I can’t help but taking screenshots. Every scene is just otherworldly beautiful.
i cannot say enough how lightning-in-a-bottle this show is. EVERYONE WATCH FOR SEASON TWO!!
You guys fucking rock. I loved your series, and this short feels so crazy knowing it came out in 2016. Thanks for scaring the shit out of me with something so beautiful.
This is absolutely stunning, really happy to find out this is getting picked up by HBO.
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS AND IT TOOK SO LONG TO FIND AGAIN THANK YOU
Hi Charles, I just wanted to say thank you to you and your team for making such a breath taking masterpiece with Scavenger's Reign.
Regards
So excited for Scavengers Reign!!
Brillaint short and brillaint series. I'm really hoping we get a second season!
This reminds me how much I love art. Absolutely amazing
wow, i watched the series (one of my favorites), but never the short until now. i love that the only sounds are those of nature. i love even more that every step of the mission shows the diversity of the flora and fauna (and also that none of it's directly copied in the series), and the goal is never clear throughout, honestly it kept feeling like they were trying to accomplish some feat for the purpose of survival. but the ending is sublime. they know they'll never return, and don't even have any sort of device to play back recordings. they have to go through extreme measures just to capture a glimpse of what the people back on (i'm assuming) earth take for granted. i love this and the series, and love even more that they have entirely different storylines and outcomes.
This is awesome! Love the universe you guys created. The sound design is great as well.
If somehow possible please make it happen Charles :)
just binged the show. it was incredible
This randomly popped into my mind and it’s just as great seeing it now as the first time I saw it on adult swim.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Scavengers Reign was particularly amazing and refreshing. It's not a sci-fi show cliché. It's something else. I was absolutely delighted watching this show. Ursula's discovery inside that labyrinth was fascinating, beautiful and a little sad. I'd love to watch a second season.
I really enjoyed this, so imaginative. I hope there’s more to come! Because I NEED more. 📽🎥📹💻📱
There’s a series coming out soon!
Incrível como o curta não tem uma sequer palavra, mas diz mais que muita produção falada, a arte é incrível e a criação deundo é simplesmente hipnotizante estão de parabéns!
Shocked this doesn’t have more likes and views that’s the best animation I’ve seen all year like that was incredible
Scavenger's Reign feels revelatory in a way that only a foundational work can be. It is a monumental triumph of animation, science fiction, and storytelling wrapped into a most imaginative tale. An unending cascade of kudos to all involved. I hope we are fortunate enough to see more.
Thank you.
if I get to see something as good as this every week, I'll die happy :D
Isn't the point of this whole video to treasure what we have? It looks like people would do anything to experience even the most mundane parts of their past
It is incredible to find this after watching the show! I had no idea this was where it started, I loved this.
This was AMAZING! Beginning gave me some 80s Anime cinema vibes. I'm guessing some of your inspiration comes from that scene? Gonna share this with my fans cause this needs more attention
uwu i love you jake and I agree
@@marso9239 James posted this bub
@@ForlornFoundry I luv you too James but Jake is my father so like priorities sorry :)
Came here from your post, not disappointed!
Looks like nausicaa!
The miniseries is awesome, really. I'm amazed by these pure ideas. loved it and love to see more from you.
Holy shit dude! You assembled the animation dream team for this one! I love the concept of showcasing all the completely alien ways you would interact with non-earthian lifeforms! I feel like you guys took a video game fetchquest and got crazy weird with it! Fucking incredible!
