If we go by the canon of the comics, Norman dedicated his life to holding up the company, corrupted his own morals, focused more time on the company more then his family, regretted how much time he neglected them when his wife died and all that effort and sacrifice to have it all be sold out from under him.
@@ajdominguez1002 What’s the 3rd one? Is it in Spider-Man 3 when he says to Harry “You know what you must do. Make him suffer. Make him wish he were dead. FIRST, WE ATTACK HIS HEART!”
I love how in this scene, when Norman is saying “Do you know how much I’ve sacrificed”, you can clearly see how upset and how full of regret he is in that he didn’t spend a lot of father/son time bonding time with Harry. Brilliant acting from Willem Dafoe!
One of the reasons why i don´t want to have kids is because i know i´ll have to work several hours per week and not spending time with kids. Trust me. My parents worked 12 hours from monday to monday. I know what it feels. I struggled with depression and anxiety all my life. I don´t want my kids to suffer the same.
The older I get, the more I understand and sympathize with what Norman did. When his company was at the height of its career, those who held stock over his company sold his ENTIRE company to a rival company without even consulting with him about it. The least they could’ve done was told him weeks or months before hand instead of a day in advance especially given the fact that it’s his name on the line and not theirs. They’re literally selling his life’s work in front of him and telling him it’s nothing he can do about it. That’s enough to make a man snap
Agreed I’m not justifying his actions later on but I can certainly understand why he did what he did. And at this point, the Goblin was already in him.
But that's what happens when you take your company public, you lose control, especially if you're not a majority shareholder and so you can be outvoted. While they did sell the company without consulting him, they sold the company at its highest ever valuation. Norman's shares in the company probably went up, so it's not like he walked away with nothing.
Not enough people talk about this, but I really love how No Way Home makes Norman so much more sympathetic than he already was, like seriously, you can really see how frightened and helpless he is against his alter ego. It’s just heartbreaking
Every time he was onscreen I had no clue if he was really that scared or if it was the Goblin manipulating them. That idea makes him more scary in my opinion.

Willem Dafoe's acting was phenomenal in this movie. This was one of the first films I ever saw. As a child I didn't fully appreciate his performance as Norman Osborn, but every time I rewatch it, it gets better. There's so much depth to his character that becomes clearer with every watch, very few except Willem Dafoe could have captured that so accurately
This is where all of the Green Goblin’s morals come from. They come from Norman’s own inner feelings of betrayal, anger, disappointment, and greed, in order to create the alternate self that is Green Goblin. Norman did everything to obtain power the right way, so now that that amounted to nothing in the end, what’s stopping Goblin from obtaining it in his own vile way? This is why he tells Spider-Man he shouldn’t bother doing the right thing for others, because he believes it’ll all end up like it did for Norman, with him having nothing but disappointment, loss, and hatred from others. To him, all that really matters in a world of winners and losers… is power.
Imagine getting kicked out of your own company that you helped build and worked your ass off for. Also Willem Defoe's performance in this movie was incredible can't wait to see him again in No Way Home
Legit. They're selling the company that Osborn built with blood, sweat, and tears - some of it was even his - that has his _name_ on it, the company that _he_ put _them_ on the board to _help_ said company. And they're like "I know its your company and you're our boss, but we're selling it, and you're quitting in a few days, which should be less humiliating than getting fired by your own employees."
That doesn't really make since though. Norman mentions Oscorp's stock has never been higher, implying that it is a publicly traded company. Being the founder and CEO, I think it is safe to assume Norman is the majority shareholder of Oscorp. If that is the case, then everyone else can sell their shares to Quest, but that doesn't mean Norman has to. Norman can still be the majority shareholder of Oscorp and have the controlling interest in Oscorp, even if Quest buys everyone else's shares.
@@bryan1687 he's msd cuz his employees are selling _his_ company behind his back. If he cared about a payoff or similar, he wouldve sold the company himself.
Imagine starting a company, watching it grow over the years at the cost of quality time with your family, especially after your wife's death. Eventually, the company reaches its absolute peak yet the board of directors, people you genuinely considered close friends, decided to go behind your back and essentially kick you out of your own company in order to sell your magnum opus to your biggest business rival. All that hard work, all that dedication, all that missed time with your only son, all for it to go to Quest Aerospace.
Osborn just sacrificed his relationship with his son to gave the 100% of his time to the company and they literally kicked him off like NOTHING. Gobby did many bad things but killing Oscorp's board wasn't one of them.
Yes it was. If the company meant this much to him he shouldve never sold the majority of the shares. Yes, the board was ruthless when it came to business- and 1 of the members was particularly heartless about it, but they didnt rob him of his life.

Honestly, the older I get, the more I appreciate Norman Osborn's character compared to Otto Octavius. Norman continually has the door closed on him by his friends, his wife, etc. To the point where he is willing to experiment on himself just to keep any shred of importance he might have. It's truly sad. Otto felt like he was mind controlled but Norman felt like he just needed a hug.
True. Norman is basically pollar opposite of Peter Parker but also shares alot in common with the hero. They are both victims of the harsh and unfair world, with people mistreating them or not recognizing their efforts. The difference is that Peter comes from a working class background and was raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May that thought him to learn and adapt to his disadvantages, while Norman is rich successful businessman who takes pride of his career , refusing to admite failure. I think it was the look on that guy's face near the end when he said "You're out, Norman" that pushed him over the edge and gave him that motivation to kill the board members. Maybe he would have still killed them, but maybe he would have been able to suppress the Goblin if he'd been convinced it was just a business move and they really didn't bear any ill will to him (not that it isn't still fucked). But that guy's demeanor at the end looked almost spiteful, like he enjoyed giving Norman the news that they'd basically destroyed the last however many decades of his life and had no empathy for him at all. Can’t wait to see Norman Osborn played by the legendary William Dafoe, back in action in Spider-Man No Way Home. Glad he’s coming back and that he reprised his role as the true Green Goblin.
This scene is even more heartbreaking when realizing that Norman Osborn probably sacrificed spending time with his son Harry in the pursuit of building up his company. And you can kind of see that they really do not connect well, in scenes they are both in together -- they are essentially estranged from each other, and do not know each other well. Norman's outburst in this scene, although seemingly over the top, is exactly an appropriate reaction one would feel on the inside, in his position. I get his frustration.
Willem Dafoe is one of the greatest actors we’ve had the pleasure to watch while he’s alive. He just ALWAYS see him give his absolute all in his roles and I hope it’s not unnoticed
As a kid this didn't hit home, as an adult I completely understand him and I think i would be tempted to do the same. These people betray him, their personal gain outweighs any sense of loyalty and they fully expect him to give in without a fight. Obviously they are in for a fetal reckoning, a man who losses everything has nothing to lose.
The fact that they kicked the man who started the whole company is fucked up. all that effort and sacrifice for nothing. That literally hits hard on the nuts.
That happens a lot. Had that happen to a major family owned company where I lived. In one a guy married the owners daughter. Owner took him into his family, made him president of the company. But the owner was still CEO, so his son in law convinced him to take the company public. He did. Then he sold the company and divorced the exowners daughter and is now one of the richest men in my state. Another company was started by two brothers, one of which wanted the company to himself, he and a cop friend planted drugs in his car and got him arrested. The brother was willing to put the other in jail for life to steal all the wealth for himself but got caught. Him and the officer that helped him both are in jail. These guys were the real villains. Yeah sure there is this 50/50 partnership in business enterprise and all that stuff but with the way they handled Norman in this scene was upsetting and I can understand his pain and motivation. He started this company, made billions and these selfish bastards had the audacity to push the guy out. Anyway, they got what they deserved later on. 😂
And he gave up family time and any time with Harry to build that company from scratch. It's literally his life's work and he gave up so many relationships and opportunities to make it this far. To get tossed aside without a second thought after that would make any man angry.
The fact that the board was still selling out to the rival company even after their main sponsor was killed in an "accident" shows that they're not just primarily motivated by money, but to also twist the knife even further into Norman at any possible opportunity. The fact that one of them gleefully sips some tea while kicking out his boss shows that this is more an act of pettiness than pragmatism.

This is where all of the Green Goblin’s morals come from.

He’s more broken than evil

OUT, AM I!?
I think there was a time when no one took superhero movies seriously and gave crappy performances... But we got things like Willem Dafoe here, we must be thankful.

William Defoe is an unbelievably, ridiculously talented actor. Just observe the range of emotions he displays both vocally, facially, and with his gestures and overall body language in this short scene alone. Many competent actors could go an entire movie and not come close to matching it.

I know they say “it’s just business”, but I understand Norman. He built this company from the ground up, they’re doing great, and then… without any prior notice, they throw him in the thrash with zero remorse or empathy. Must feel like a major slap in the face for Norman. I kinda get why Goblin wanted to kill them… 😅
Yeah that’s messed up. But it’s not like he’s leaving with nothing, he would get a part of that sale since he has stock ownership in the company, probably a golden parachute too.
@@TheCinemaViewer I get your point, and I agree, but emotionally it’s devastating for him, and since a villain’s motives are usually emotion-based it makes sense he killed them for their betrayal.
Yeah it’s like when people say “it’s not personal”. It probably feels pretty personal to the people that get screwed over.

He is SUCH an insane actor. Subtle, expressive or hammy, he can do it ALL and make all his performances unique and enormously compelling rather than just standard yelling so called "great" actors like *cough* *cough* DiCaprio etc do!! Dafoe is point blank, one of the greatest actors EVER!! The range and smooth transition of expressions!! Beautiful. Never phones in and finds the right nuance and calculation to portray a character.
