Thank you so much for this video. I have an old Tiffany lampshade from my teenage years (now 65!) and I've been wanting to recover it for a few decades. I'm going to enjoy following your instructions. xx
I’m going to attempt this for the first time tomorrow, using an old frame. I’m very excited to learn this! Thank you for your very easy to follow- tutorials! 😄
@@kateaubrey6193 OMG! I'm glad I'm not the only one with a penchant for old lampshades 😃 I also have quite a collection of beautiful wooden floor lamp stands in need of shades so I can use them, now I can try and make that happen .
I"ve been seeing Susan's beautiful lampshades on Facebook for several years and had wondered how they were constructed. I'm so pleased that she posted these instructions-made-easy on UA-cam. So lovely!
Susan, your work is amazing! This tutorial is so good! Thanks a lot! I was looking for that for a long time. Other people make lampshades, but these are very simple. But you make works of art. It is superb!!! If it is possible, could you please let me know where you take all this beautiful frames? ❤❤❤
Your tips have made my day. We move home at weekend and have chosen a different colour scheme. Leaving me without matching lampshades. Luckiiy i found a stunning huge table runner. Double sided. My plan was to add this on a duvet cover but now can cover the lampshades too!! Only simple 4 side ones to begin with. (We're on an incredibly tiny budget) Thank you so much now on the hunt for a standard lamp and shade. Subscribed as you explain everything so simply even for me ❤
@ you’re so welcome. The runner has beautiful embroidery on both ends of top part so will be using this on my favourite Duvet cover as I said the other is plain but same fabric as DC. Gone to sage green instead of plain cream. When I have a minute to myself as currently unpacking boxes. Move was delayed until Monday. I’m excited to do this x I meant to add I actually have this exact same fabric you have used in this tutorial already in my stash ❤
This is wonderful. I wanted to recover an old lamp that I grew up with. And I did not want to glue the fabric. You showed me some great tips! Thank you!
I made my first lampshade a week or two ago and this was seriously the best tutorial for it. I'm hooked on it now! I managed to snag like 4 more frames from thrift stores around me and can't wait to get to them. Thank you so much for these videos!
Thank you so much! I've been trying to find tutorials for fringe to put onto a parasol and this translates over great! Didn't know how easy it was to do and now I don't have to break my bank for my ideal umbrella :)
After just one video, I'm already in love with you! 😍😍 Thank you for the amazing tips. The idea with using a cushion for a pattern is just genius! Instant subscribe - thank you ❤️❤️❤️
I started making these over 40 years ago. In those days we sewed on all the trims as the option to use glue just wasn't there. You can sew the trims on if you wish it is up to you. Thank you for comment.
I have been planning decor for my basement/living room. And I would like to do steampunk (but a cleaner, newer look), and most steam punk is Victorian inspired, Thanks so much for this video, Well Done
Hola is so beautiful your DIY lamp lovely thank u foe sharing. May the Lord keep you in his loving Marcy n guide you to the foot of the cross where he share is. Blood for you at cross be. Safe peace love. Happy holidays God bless. B. X. Ny
Wonderful tutorial thank you, You mentioned how much material to use for a 14” frame but not the trim length needed please could you tell me how much I would need to achieve as you did for a 16” festoon lamp frame ...
Beautiful, Great skills passed down from your Mother. Is cutting on the bias 100% necessary as the tropical velvet print I want to use needs to be straight. X
I know the problem,Sandra. I have found that cutting on the bias is the only way to get a good fit because the fabric needs to stretch over the frame. Thank you for your lovely comments. Much appreciated.
I can’t stop watching your videos ! Subscribed immediately! So beautifully made! Do you have any tips for standing tulip 🌷 shaped ones. In my case they face upwards instead of hanging down and pointing light downwards.
Thank you for your tutorial, I want to ask a question as I have a frame that is not protruding out but is bevel inwards. Because you say cut on the bias would I need to do that with the fabric going inwards. Thank you /
Lisa. Did you find an answer to this? Susan didn't appear to add a seam allowance and I'm thinking it's because it's cut on the bias: you just stretch and don't need to add a seam allowance!!!
What fabric do you recommend for this? I’m afraid of something burning. Thank you so much for the helpful tutorial! I recently bought a lamp that needs some love and I plan on recovering it soon
You can use any fabric and spray it with fire retardant solution which you can buy on Amazon. I also recommend led bulbs or cold light bulbs which emit little heat.
I have a couple of very unusual lampshade frames that I’ve been trying to recover them but I’m not sure exactly how to do it I want to do it in a fiberglass tape material with the gimp but I need to get a primer on how to work with that
Hello! Please let me know where i can buy actual lamp frames like the Parasol one used in the video, i love that you have multiple peacock lamp shades in the final clips too, so diverse
Pantalla Lampshades of Distinction thankyou for your reply! I’m still looking for the right fabric and I have everything else nearly ready to create. Thankyou for making the video. 😀
Oops, you forgot to mention, for those not used to cutting pattern pieces, that you must cut your pattern piece a cm bigger all round to allow for a seam? Am I correct t?
Juanita a cm allowance is not needed on the side seams only on the top and bottom of the pattern piece. All pattern pieces need to be cut on the bias which allows for the fabric to be stretched across the frame.
That pillow trick is GENIUS!
It's great isn't it. A really easy way to make a pattern. Thank you for watching the video

It's very pretty. I personally don't particularly care for adhesive for any fabrics, but maybe for this project I'd make an exception

Thank you, I love these. How do you make sure they are not a fire hazard? is it just the distance from the bulb to the material?
Always use low wattage, cold or LED bulbs and treat the fabric with fire retardant solution
So awesome thank you

If you are in the UK you can get them from Homemaking Heaven - link under the videos
How much would cost to make me two shades l have the shades already I did not have the time you did a beautiful job love your tutor
Sorry for the delay Dorene - am in the middle of moving house! Will start making again next year so keep in touch
What's the best fabric for lampshades?
Beautiful
Just wow 🤩
Thank you
Almost three years onand I learned a lot.
Brilliant - I am just about to upload another one which you may enjoy. Getting a bit better at making videos now but much better at making lampshades!
Do you have a link to where you can purchase the metal frame for the shade?
Look in the art / craft shops.
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm not brave enough to try it yet, but I will soon. What is the tape that you are using to wrap around the frame?
Just cotton binding tape but you could use bias binding - or make your own
Hello 😊 where do I buy the screen vase?? Thank you
Love this! Can you suggest the best place to buy unusual shape frames please? The are only a few shapes or sizes on eBay.
If you are in the UK go to HomeMaking Heaven.
Majestic!!!
Excellent tutorial, can you please remind me of the name of this style of frame, I’m not quite catching what it is. Thanking in advance 😃
HI Carole this frame is called a parachute frame
After making your template do you add a seam allowance? I saw that you added top and bottom, but was wondering about the seams? Thank you :)
Lisa. Did you find an answer to this? Susan didn't appear to add a seam allowance and I'm thinking it's because it's cut on the bias: you just stretch and don't need to add a seam allowance!!!
I was wondering this too
Hi there, love the video, however do you have a list of things that you used at all? I am looking to make one for a university project!

I live in the UK and can get the parasol shades on Ebay.
Here is another place you can buy them homemakingheaven.co.uk/
Did you allow any seam allowance? Great video thankyou.
Ok I just heard you allowed half inch on the top bottom, so nothing on the sides?
@@GypsyinAus No nothing on the sides
Pantalla Lampshades of Distinction thankyou for your reply! I’m still looking for the right fabric and I have everything else nearly ready to create. Thankyou for making the video. 😀
Stunning. X
Thank you! 😊
Simply beautiful!
How much fabric did you use on this size shade.. thank you 😊
Half a metre would be more than enough for this shade as it's only a 14 inch frame.
Why cut on the bias????? Love the peacock.
Because cutting on the bias allows the fabric to stretch
Where do you buy the lamp shade forms?
I'm also wondering where to buy the forms!
You can buy forms at yard / garage sales or thrift shops in the form of actual lampshades, and just remove the existing fabric.
Can't find them anywhere
Maybe you could make your own with wire?
Maybe charity shops
Hi is it possible to add an attachment to the shade so that it can be used for a ceiling light?
Sorry as I have been away for a while.Yes you can get an attachment called a spider to allow the shade to be used as a ceiling shade.
do you have a link to places where you can buy frames? I keep searching and searching and cant find any?
Only in the UK. The link is below the videos.
