Everything looks amazing. To me it seems like the house is coming along faster that I expected especially since it's just you. I think putting the house plans in a frame would always keep those memories alive before the start and during the build.
I hate being a keyboard commando. But in the kitchen I always use adjustable Electric boxes. There's no telling when you want to change the thicknesses of the finishes. It makes it easier to install now and easier to adjust in the future. I also use them on the exterior.
I didn’t see your microwave plug. And in my kitchen remodel we used the led lights in the ceiling I love them so nice and bright. My remodel is done finally it only took from April until August! Had to wait the longest on the cabinets. I hope you have yours ordered the company I used are now over 20 weeks out for delivery and install!
Hello Andrew man you're doing an excellent job man. The house is looking good coming along just fine. I am surprised that the stores can't keep those electric boxes in stock. Everything is seemed to run out of stock. I stopped at 1 of my favorite truck 🚛 stop in South Carolina and they were out of change only accepting credit cards for payment because of the bank don't have no money. " WHAT " I like your laser tool man that is awesome. I know it makes things so much easier and faster. Good video man.
Looking good you are rally making progress and; hopefully getting all the blocking and electrical boxes in the right location. With your OCD I'm confident that you have everything covered. Really nice job that you are doing and Tiffany will have a well built house - someday.👍😀
It is looking so good! You are doing a great job and each time you work on it the house is getting closer to being able to live in your new living space👍👍👍👍❤️
dont forget to put in boxes for low voltage cat and coax cables and access points in the ceiling and behind the tvs. also some boxes for speakers inside to behind the tv and a sound system outside.
Andrew I know everyone has their preferences in the kitchen. I would suggest that you 1) build hood over gas range to vent in attic, build space in island for microwave and 2) if refrigerator will be enclosed both sides, plan on 38/40”W and 74”H. We regret not doing so and would cost too much now to rebuild or re-configure adequate space for the refrigerator. The exhaust on microwave is, IMHO, noise with little filtering results. Great video as always.
I agree with some of your points. Our last house had a vented microwave and it did a very good job. Keep in mind the shop and pantry will have additional options for freezer refrigerator units.
Make sure to add an extra block for your switch boxes off the doors to account for width of your molding around the doors. Don’t want your covers to be to close to the molding. Also make sure switch boxes are behind the door when it opens. Once sheet rocked hard to adjust!
After watching this one, the switch box by kitchen door needs attention. Looks like it needs blocking for trim width. Also if you can drop a plumb from center of lights, so that lights are over the counter surface. If too far out, your body creates a shadow. With the big fan, ensure can lights are not above fan blades. If so, you have a strobe effect.
Have you considered running under cabinet low voltage led lighting? I have it under my upper cabinets and also along my kick plates. The upper cabinet lights make it great for work surface lighting. The ones in have on my kick plates are great for the indirect lighting of my kitchen.
Did you say you can put fans on those plastic ceiling boxes? I've always used a ceiling fan bracket or extra bracing for them. Not so much for the weight but because of the vibration and movement. I just don't trust those boxes to hold up and also not work the nails out over time. Also, I've started seeing a lot of LED lights with selectable color temperature ranging anywhere from about 2700 to 6000. So you put it up and if you decide you don't like the color just pull it down, slide the switch to a different setting, and put it back up. It's a nice option, something to think about. Everything is looking great, you're a hard worker, especially in that heat.
I have a metal box for my one fan in the bedroom, the boxes due clearly state fan use if using screws instead of nails. I absolutely agree metal boxes is the right choice for a heavy fan. Nice to hear about the LED color choices
Another thing to consider prior to an installed and working HVAC since you are sealing your home very well is to have constant airflow in the home as soon as the walls are sheathed, seamed taped and windows installed to prevent mold since its just you building the house which is not at the pace of the fast construction of today.
I originally had my fridge on a GFCI circuit, but I kept getting nuisance trips so I put it on a dedicated standard breaker with no problems. Not required here on refrigerators but not sure about elsewhere. I think some refrigerators even say no GFCI in their instructions (to avoid food spoilage). Looking great!
Hey Andrew, you might want to think about your microwave venting now while you have the chance. Microwaves give you three options, blow it back into your face, up the top, or out the back. Most houses have it blow back into the house which I personally hate, yeah, strong word, but true. If you go up you'll have to have the holes in your cabinet and up through the top before going sideways to vent out. Since you're still in stud phase, the best option is to plan to go out the back into the wall, then go up and out. Something to think about. Oh, don't forget the microwave outlet in that upper cabinet.
I agree with Tiffany, tall cabinets are the way to go. I keep forgetting to ask, is there anyway to protect all electrical items from an electrical surge without using individual surge protectors?
You mentioned you would be putting in LED lighting...will that be 120VAC or 12VDC? If you do run DC you can very easily use dimmers for under cabinet and/or kick plate LEDs for night-lighting that doesn't blind you. Another bonus is that you can use battery backup to keep them going in the event of an outage.
A friend of mine who installs cabinets for a living has a new way of hanging the uppers, he has the contractor put 1/2" OSB on the wall in place of the drywall in the cabinets area, just in case he misses a Stud, every body has there own way of doing things. Ceiling Fan Blocking is important and you may want to do something there. your coming right alone.
@@TKCL Oh, ok, wasn't sure. Looks like a great job so far, and don't forget that Tiffany has a lot of input on the build as well ! Got to keep her happy and upbeat ! Take it from a guy who was in the building trades/remodeling scene ! God speed, and no bashed thumbs !! Lol 😆
On your electrical, the micro-vent (microwave vent hood) over your stove and the refrigerator each need their own dedicated circuit since they are utilities. Double-check with your inspector if the need to be GFCI or Arc fault protected since they are dedicated appliances, you may be able to add a single outlet for your oven to the micro-vent circuit. -Edit- You forgot the box for your micro-vent. As someone who was an electrician for years, you are going a good job of the electrical, so far.
Don't use those plastic boxes in the ceiling for fans. I would only use metal boxes. After time the rotation of the fan will cause the screws to loosen in the box. Also the heat of being in the ceiling can cause them to dry out and break.
I didn't see a two gang box near the sink for the over sink light and garbage disposal, or an low box for the disposal. Even if you aren't planning on one now, this would be the time to wire in a switched outlet for the future.
Hey dont use those blue round boxes for your fans....use the fan boxes. Most of them are black and where you fan goes you run a 2x on edge if there isnt one there and the box bolts to the bottom with lag bolts.....way stronger
Andrew, you'll have an elect. box in your cabinet above the stove for the microwave, right ? I know it's early, but might want to make sure you save or have one for it. Also, does that box have to be steel because it's exposed and not resessed in a wall or ceiling ? Great video, love all of the extras/additions. It's going to be a very nice and safe home for y'all.
Everything's looking good buddy you're making progress just have to keep them working at it just have to keep working on it it's looking good text me back buddy God bless
Do you know what kind and how thick your flooring is going to be. Are you going to put down any subflooring. The reason I ask is you measured the height of your blocking from the concrete floor not the height of the finished floor.
Thank you for the video. That was very helpful. Do you mind sharing which screws did you use and which length or Link to it? Thank you and keep on the good work!!
This house is overbuilt, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. My friends dad bought a 1988 Toyota that was over engineered, drove it for almost 400K miles before he sold it, only had to replace the timing belt on it once. It had no rust, engine ran great, probably could have used another timing belt but there is nothing wrong with over engineering especially if your the end user. In a way I wish you had built the house I live in now. My life would be easier if you had.
Question shouldn't you have an electrical outlet to connect your Microwave? In our home the outlet was place inside the cabinet located on top of the microwave to hide the connection. A hole was made underneath the cabinted to get the electric cord thru. Maybe it will be different for you.
Nails have far better shear (break) strength than most brittle screws. Screws however have better holding (tensile/pullout) strength. Shear is quite important, especially in wind driven hurricane zones. Straps are used here to hold things together.

The advantage of building your own house: Blocking Everywhere! What are you thinking for your backsplash? (please don't say subway tile). :)
No we are doing granite countertops and probably a small granite 4 inch backslash.

I cannot remember exactly what size. It was either 3 or 4 inch deck screws.
Is that 36" from finished floor or concrete floor? Hopefully the width of the blocking can accommodate vertical adjustments.
Concrete, I do not believe in installing cabinets over flooring.
