    Fawlty Towers was, in my estimation, the most consistently hilarious show I've ever seen. However, it does not come off well in these short clips. In order to truly appreciate the humor, you have to be familiar with the characters. Only 12 episodes of the show were ever produced, so it is well worth the effort to seek them out and watch the entire series. Believe me, you'll be glad you did"|!

      The scene "Judge me not" is IMO one of the best ones.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 5 років тому

      It's very funny. But it doesn't seem historically accurate. I googled the subject and found that Hitler took over two other countries and a couple of other regions before invading Poland, but I guess those don't count because the other countries surrendered (even though one had an army of one million men)? Is it an act of war if one side gives up without a shot? If yes, I suggest WW2 started in 1938, and perhaps even in 1936. Hey, it's the internet, so I'm entitled to my opinion.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 5 років тому

      @@mattsmith1518 I think it was 9 days after. But it sounds like you are agreeing with my crazy proposition that invading a country with a massive army isn't an act of war if the smaller army doesn't fight back. I disagree with you. I think if you invade with overwhelming force and aren't wanted there it is an act of war. But this is just my opinion.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 5 років тому

      @@mattsmith1518 That's an argument. But what would you say if one side called it a war but the other side didn't? For example, in the Korean conflict, North Korea called it a war, but the United States called it a Police Action. As wikipedia says, "In the US, the war was initially described by President Harry S Truman as a "police action" as the United States never formally declared war on its opponents and the operation was conducted under the auspices of the United Nations." So who gets to decide if something is a "war"? The leaders at the time? Or historians? I would say historians are less biased and more accurate. And I would say that historians should say WW2 really started in 1938 when Hitler started invading countries that didn't want to be invaded.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 5 років тому +1

      @@mattsmith1518 Ok, I'll stop. I guess I could have been a little nicer, (sorry) but as arguments go it was quite friendly between us. Most discussions on the internet are very uncivil. We did okay. We used logic more than emotions. I wish you well, and once again sorry if I came across as argumentative.

    My favorite scene occurs in "The Psychiatrist" when the young, buxom girl comes to stay. Basil, while showing the girl her room, discovers the bathroom light bulb is not working. He reaches around to try the light switch, which is just outside the bathroom door. The girl happens to be standing where the light switch is located, doing some stretches after a long trip. As Basil reaches around for the switch, he accidentally finds himself fondling the girls breast. Of course Sybil walks in at the worst possible moment!

    this must have been a really tough list, since Fawlty Towers is absolute comic perfection. However, I have to speak up for two bits that were left off the list, which are two of the most hilarious bits of dialogue and exchange I think ever written in comedy. First is the scene where Basil is attempting to tell Manuel that "he knows nothing" about the horse bet he made in the episode "Communication Problems" (mentioned in this video as the deaf guest). The exchange of trying to explain to Manuel that he shouldn't say anything about the horse is hilarious. It's on youtube, search "fawlty towers i know nothing". Second is when the burglar alarm goes off in the germans episode, and basil has to explain to guests, who all enter the lobby at different points in the conversation, that the fire drill hasn't started yet. one of his classic lines...."i don't know why we bother, we should let you all BURN!" HAHAHA.

Then, Basil greets them, asking if he can help, grinning happily for a moment, just before realising, that they are the actual inspectors and the scene ends with a frozen frame of him jumping back, screaming in terror. A lot of short-lived comedy shows end when they do because the creators of the show often feel that they've done all they can do without jumping the shark and bleeding the show dry. "Fawlty Towers" may have had only twelve episodes, but every single one is as funny as the last; there isn't a single bad episode (in my opinion). So most of the time, short-lived comedy shows are often a hell of a lot funnier than ones that never seem to end. *cough* Big Bang Theory *cough*
      By the way, any favourite "Fawlty Towers" episodes? Mine's probably either "The Germans" or "Communication Problems".
