My friend is torn between a Miata and a GTI... I keep telling him the GTI is one of, if not the best, all around car ever made. It's not for me, but for someone like him who likes sportscars but still needs a good daily and space to haul his bicycles, there's not really anything better.
Just traded in a Mustang GT for a GTI. Couldn’t be happier. Way more fun to drive than the Mustang, it’s basically a go kart in the twisties. Also my first automatic in 35 years of driving. The DSG is an awesome box, especially when you put it into manual mode.
I'm 36 and own a Mk8 GTI. I highly recommend them as a first, second, third, etc car!

Vdubz have such nice interior/ general build quality too, body panels are flush and the doors are weighted perfectly:)
Miatas are sick! But it's hard to have one as your only car.
my only thing would be to get the manual so DSG services arent a thing and look for mk7.5s that have had the water pump replaced
Pre 2018 cars could be missing the performance pack and thats better brakes and a free 20hp on 91 octane
Great all rounders
For me, a great first car is a Toyota Yaris with 1.0 litre 3 cylinder NA Daihatsu engine that produces 72 hp. But Golf GTI can be a great first car as well, I guess.
