I got two and a half turns (540°) beyond finger tight and my lugs were maxed. But now my snare sounds amazing! I’ve tried dozens of tuning methods... turns out cranking the shit of the lugs works best. Gonna try my other snare tomorrow.
@ash, So tasteful your sound and your style of playing. It's a proper inspiration for us drummers out here. Much appreciated! You playing my brand helps as well... ;)
Well I can't possibly tell you how much of a piece of heaven that Hobbit house with all the beautiful gear in it is. Gee thanks, now I feel bad. I'll be okay, my s***'s not bad
That is a Gretsch Broadkaster kit and on his Snare Reso he is using an Ambassador Hazy Snare Side. remo.com/products/product/ambassador-hazy-snare-side/
I'm wondering about his side snare, it's probably also a Gretsch but which one? CS dots are lovely heads, perfect for getting a consistent snare attack sound.
林志恒 he put his drum key on one of the lugs, basically to keep it in close reach for tuning. Different songs may require a different tuning. For example you can completely de-tune only 2 lugs and it entirely changes the sound very quickly. No need to overthink tuning. I tune by feel, then go. Some people try and get every lug the exact same tension but I think it's a waste of time. I use nylon washers, it makes for easy effortless tuning and the smoothness of nylon makes it easier to tune by feel. It just comes with doing it enough till you get the hang. Notice Ash didn't waste time with tension checking every lug. He went with feel.
@@elithepitbulldog2209 Yeah, I've only been seriously learning drumming and percussion for about 2 years, and at the beginning tuning my bongos and drums seemed like an arcane science I would never understand. Lately I've just been experimenting with using my ears and intuition and not overthinking it (once I read a 40 page manual on drum tuning). I've gotten the best results so far like this.
So new and inspiring, never ever seen anything like this before in my life ..
I wish Ash had his own channel. I'd watch every day
he does: ua-cam.com/users/ashsoan
He does lol
@@weezypeezy4366 I've found it since lol but thanks!
Very helpful to see the technique of some of the greatest drummers out there, thanks for taking the time to make this!
nice video! learned that you can tune a snare from start to finish without listening to it even once :D
'sounds kinda cool...' :D effortless, no taping, nothing fancy... love it! Still with his hands the cardbox would sound unbelievably
One of the most tasteful cats out there!

Damn that snare is amazing
Agreed Nancy sounds beautiful.
That is the best bass drum I've ever heard
Fucking hell Ash tuning his snare like his using a fricking screw driver ramming a fixing up on a wall.
Love it...Up the Blighty.
First person I see that doesn´t talk loudly while on Inears. Great drum sound.
love your drumming!!
That snare sound is fucking amazing!!!
I was literally waiting for the term "fingertight"
That's what she said.
Sounds wonderful. Thanks for hints!
The new remo classic fit are quick and easy, especially on drums like older wrap Gretsch.

5:21 - wish I could do this!
hay algun video de Ash mostrando como afina todos los tambores ?? garcias
and it sounds directely awesome, a kind of magic ! ;)
sounds like a firecracker!
Does anyone know the exact model he is using as a main snare? Is it a gretsch 4157?
Hi Philip, Ash is changing the snare head on a vintage Gretsch 5x14 USA Custom. The other snare is a fairly new 5x14 3-ply Broadkaster.
If you were wondering, he did 6 half turns on the first lug...
After all these years we are still taping the 421 to its clip. You figure Sennheiser would have fixed that by now .
What heads does he use on his toms and kick? Does anyone know? :)
Damn, cranks the hell out of that thing! Sounds amazing though!

Man that sounds good... what drums are they and what was he using as his reso head?

Anyone can tell me the name of mic over the snare? Please, please, please...
Pan Wrona I think it’s a Shure SM57

Rookie question. What did he put in 5:02?

He put on some sort of dampening gel (google Moongel to see what it's like) onto the drum head, to control the overtones and the ringing of the drum.

works for jazz?
The way he speaks reminds me of a chef...can't quite remember which one
You can finger tighten 2 lugs at a time it’s faster. He’s going 1 by 1 takes too long
This set sounds completely dead.
One man trash another man treasure.
