Nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Cinematography Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Jason Leigh Best Original Score, Ennio Morricone. It won the Best Original Score. It was Ennio Morricone's first and only won after being nominated 5 times since 1979. He was the oldest winner, 85 years old. The movie was inspired by THE THING, as we slowly begin to unravel the mystery surrounding the characters and how they are all connected.
23:21 that was a priceless 150 year-old guitar that was on loan from a museum. Jennifer is personally reacting to Kurt smashing the guitar. lol. Kurt thought it was a dummy guitar.
Tarantino's own first film, Reservoir Dogs, served as partial inspiration for this film, as well as John Carpenter's The Thing. Tarantino even had the cast of The Hateful Eight watch The Thing together, Kurt Russel included.
The first time I was aware of Walton Goggins was in the series The Shield were he was a bad cop but then they were all bad cops. Another great series worth watching ❤
That was a real antique guitar Jennifer Jason Leigh was playing. It was supposed to be switched out with a prop for Kurt Russel to smash but because of a miscommunication, he smashed the real one. Leigh shouting "Whoa whoa whoa!" was her real shocked reaction.
I rank this one near the top of the list for Tarantino movies. I love it. I love the score, love the dialog, love the humor, love the characters, I like every piece of this film. It's bloody, shocking, inventive and very rewatchable.
Walton Goggins is one of my favorite actors of all time, besides Denzel Washington. He's one of the best dialog deliverers I've ever seen. I loved him as Boyd Crowder in the show Justified. He was at his best in that show. I also loved him in Django, Sons of Anarchy, The Hateful Eight, The shield and many other things.
Homages Quentin Tarantino paid to Sergio Leone in this film include (1) Tatum who's known for portraying "good guys" in film is cast as the main "bad guy". Similar to Leone casting "good guy" Henry Fonda as the main "bad guy" in "Once Upon a Time in the West". (2) Minnie's haberdashery is actually a renovation of the house Jill McBain inherited in "Once Upon a Time in the West".
They filmed this movie on a 900-acre ranch in Colorado for the exterior shots as well as portions of the interior shots of Minnie's. The rest was filmed on a recreated set in Hollywood, which they aways kept at the same very cold temperature while they were working, meaning the crew was wearing jackets and parkas and such in sunny California while filming this movie.
This is one of my favorite QT movies. As usual the all star cast delivers. This is not the first time Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kurt Russell have worked together. They were also in Backdraft together.
So hyped he's slated for the Fallout TV series, at the same time that also means that the teaser in the end of Justified City Primeval was just a teaser and he wont be coming back as Boyd Crowder anytime soon.
As a Florida native, I cannot imagine snow 6 months a year. I've only ever seen snow twice in my life. It's weird how people can live completely different lives in completely different places but in the end, we're all still just people.
Thanks Nick and Jen, you've given me another movie on my list of "must watch" with my husband Ron. And congratulations Nick for being able to control your natural reflexes during the poisoned characters reactions scenes. A 2016 Cohen Brothers film I'd like to recommend is HAIL, CAESAR! (not a Roman epic.) It is set in old (early 1950's ) Hollywood. We already knew Channing Tatum could dance (?), well bump & grind, but now we see him really dance while filming a musical number (a send up spoof of a typical Gene Kelly sailor boy routine.) And not the hero and neither is George.
LOL I died laughing when your mom said "Isn't she a peach" when Jennifer Jason Leigh blew out her nose LMAO! A very bloody movie but after a while it gets cartoonish and it doesn't really register. Great reaction as always and glad you're enjoying your Tarantino journey even if some of his movies are a bit out there.
Demian Bichir (Bob) was also outstanding in the FX series 'The Bridge', alongside Diane Kruger. Only ran for 2 seasons, but well worth watching every episode.
Another great movie! Have you seen Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in Little China with James Hong at his very most and best? How 'bout Kurt as Cap'n Ron with Martin Short?
I would highly recommend a little-known film called 'Daddy And Them' (2001) with Walter Goggins if you enjoy his acting. It was written and directed by Billy Bob Thornton and was supposed to be released right after Sling Blade but there was some dispute and it got shelved for a few years. At any rate, it's a hilarious southern comedy with a slew of great actors, some of which took little to no pay to be in it, John Prine, Laura Dern, Andy Griffith, Ben Affleck, Kelly Preston, Diane Ladd, Brenda Blethyn, Tuesday Knight, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jim Varney. It's honestly one of my favorite films so I always try to turn people onto it.
Also, have you seen Kurt Russell as Snake in Escape From New York with iconic scenes of president in Air Force One 747 crashing into South Tower of World Trade Center? Dammmmn!
Good review, I like this movie some good dialogue and interesting characters. And all shot in one location very claustrophobic well done picking up it's a "who done it" so quickly
Walton Goggins - before Sons of Anarchy, there was The Shield, a 7 season show about dirty LA cops. Incredible ensemble cast, and Goggins became the stand out.
I love the comedy in this movie before it slowly but surely turns more sinister, and then into a classic Tarantino bloodbath. Even then it's hilarious. One of his best scripts IMO.
Is No Country for Old Men a movie you guys can react to? Or have u both seen it ? Or ? That would be a phenomenal video, in addition to the incredible film it is in itself.
Oh, dear. That's the guitar I told you in another Tarantino movie review. The guitar was a real western era acoustic guitar lended by a museum, and Tarantino didn't told Russell about it, so Russell broke it. I'm pretty sure Tarantino did it on purpose, you don't let sometjing like this happen so easily. Great movie maker but a total lunatic about anything else.
I really loved this one, but with the long runtime, slow build, and less pop culture, no it doesn't get mentioned as often as the others. However, the one that gets mentioned the least is Jackie Brown.
For some people I can see this being kinda boring because it's more of a self-contained movie and most of it takes place primarily in one room it definitely makes sense because of the situation all of the characters find themselves in and I do like the self contained setting but I still like Django a whole lot better but this is still a pretty solid Quentin Tarantino movie for the most part
I love your reactions, mostly, but I can't say I'm in the "depends on what she did" camp. Brutality is brutality, and when it's not in self-defense but gratuitously sadistic, what can I say? We shouldn't sink to the level of those we deplore. Restrain them from doing more harm, sure, but when we "battle with monsters" or "stare into the abyss" (as Nietzsche warned), we risk becoming the darkness we abhor.
OK now I have to say this. Tarantino can be quite a brilliant filmmaker. But I’ve been saying this for many years that he needs oversight and a filter. When he does not have any oversight, nor any filter; he does dumb, stupid, childish things. This I think is an excellent film. One of his best. Well written, great acting beautifully photographed on the high resolution widescreen film. And maybe it’s because he just feels like he’s got to be in the film somehow someway because directors always want to act. Why would he take this excellent film that he’s created. That seems extremely credible based on the times, post Civil War. And then do this silly, childish voiceover? Absolutely nonsensical and childish. And see this is what I mean about oversight, and a filter. Someone in charge of the production should’ve said no Quinton, that’s not a good idea. also, it’s being depicted in front of you on a huge screen that people paid money for. Let them figure it out. Don’t spoon feed people. All they had to do was show the scene and show her seeing someone do it. Even if there was ambiguity about whether or not, she actually saw, the person poisoning the coffee. That would be even better because It would be revealed during the song anyway. Which would’ve been even more interesting and thriller like. This is childish. This is what happens when you give intelligent and creative people a lot of money and artistic control. When they have not been formally trained in film school or in whatever relevant discipline is applicable. And have not had to endure the academic rigor of a college or vocational program and professors. And I often think to myself what type of products could we have seen if someone said to Tarantino; I think you need to go to film school. And what you learn as well as discipline is humility. Because when people were or have criticized him and his filmmaking decisions. He has absolutely no humility whatsoever. And is often childish. He is resentful and angry and defensive. Because he is not used to peer review, academic rigor, and academic criticism. This is why people get education in these fields. Because of the growth, rigor, discipline, and professionalism that comes as a result of it all. And I was so disappointed with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It was an extremely poor film. Especially coming after the hits that he had with Inglourious Basterds, Django, and hateful eight. It’s very disappointing that his last film was a beautifully filmed, quite honestly crappy movie. Quintet In my opinion is someone that has read all of the benefits of his creativity and accolades. And as a result, has become egocentric and close minded to intellectual and academic decision. Because, of course, like wall egocentric people like himself, “they just don’t understand. “Well, maybe we do understand. And we want to see him grow as a filmmaker so he doesn’t fall into the stereotypical downward slope that directors of a certain age for them to. Which is exactly what concerns him. And the way to do that is to grow. And growth requires humility. I’m concerned about the ending of his career with this tent film supposedly. And I am rather skeptical about, whether or not it’s going to be any good. We’ll see what happens.
This is my least favourite Tarantino film. Not because it's a bad film, quite the opposite, but despite the excellent performances, direction and dialogue, The Hateful Eight didn't grab me the same way other Tarantino films did.
I don't know if you knew that Jennifer. Jason lee's father was vic morrow the Who was an actor who was killed or shall I say beheaded when he did a movie with 2 Asian children? And they were also killed one of the children was beheaded. The other one was smashed by the helicopter. Do you remember that situation? They were making a movie with Landis
Ennio Morricone's rejected soundtrack for THE THING can be heard throughout the film.
Hell yeah, nearly like the thing, the movie too. Trapped and don't know who is who

what's funny is that that museum rarely loans out guitars (if ever) and after that they said they would never loan one out ever again
I suspect the tragedy of the guitar dimmed the enthusiasm of the project somewhat besides the financial hit.
Tarantino's own first film, Reservoir Dogs, served as partial inspiration for this film, as well as John Carpenter's The Thing. Tarantino even had the cast of The Hateful Eight watch The Thing together, Kurt Russel included.
Watching the thing with Kurt Russell would be the coolest thing ever.
The first time I was aware of Walton Goggins was in the series The Shield were he was a bad cop but then they were all bad cops. Another great series worth watching ❤
I love how your mom is so smitten with Kurt Russell ❤😊
😊

Oh, no way!! That's crazy!
It was an 1860s Martin guitar on loan from the Martin Company Museum. After this happened, they stopped loaning anything to film productions.
Imagine stopping by after the blizzard and you find all 8 of em with no explanation.
And the other 6 bodies in the well.

This is one of my favorite QT movies.
As usual the all star cast delivers.

Tim Roth is a British actor part of that brit pack back in the day like Gary Oldman, Bruce payne!!
Walton Goggins is an awesome actor and regardless of the role he is in you can count on him to deliver a damn fine performance.
