  • With the rapidly spreading popularity of single-stream recycling programs, in which users co-mingle all recyclables into one large container, curb-sort recycling trucks have become all but extinct. However, some communities still utilize curb-sort recycling trucks in order to reduce contamination and increase the value of the recovered commodities. Without further ado, I present you with a very fine example of one of these remaining recylers - the Dempster Recycle One trough-loaded recycler body, seen here mounted to a Crane Carrier Co. Low-Entry Tilt (LET) cab and chassis! This truck is seen here collecting residential recyclables separated into three different bins - one for bottles and cans, one for newspaper, and the other for mixed paper and cardboard. The pre-sorted recyclables are placed into the proper corresponding compartments in the truck's trough. Once the trough is full, a linkage system raises the trough to the top of the body, and turns over to deposit the recyclables into the truck. The recyclables are kept separate by a set of partitions within the body. When the truck is dumping out at the recycling facility, the partitions are able to be opened one at a time, allowing the recyclables to stay separated throughout the entire process! I hope you all enjoy the video!
I'd like to extend a huge thank you out to this very friendly and professional driver for allowing me to shoot some video of this truck!

Back when Waste Management served San Jose (I believe their contract went from 1998 to 2002, but I can't be sure because I was REALLY young back then), they used trough-loaded recycling trucks. I still remember what they look like: they had two separate bodies on one chassis (split perpendicular, not parallel, like on co-collector trucks). The chassis was either Mack or Freightliner, not sure which one, but it definitely had a long-nose cab. When they dumped the troughs, it had to be done one body at a time.
To date, I haven't been able to find any pictures of this truck AT ALL. I can't even find the type of model they were, leading me to believe they were cobbled together by the local WM division (I do vividly remember, though, that the trash was collected by Amrep Octagons on Peterbilt 320 chassis). Either no one ever documented the truck, or the Mandela Effect has gotten me and WMs San Jose division had been using the Recycle One, Labrie Top-Select, or GS Recycler this whole time.
If anyone recognizes the truck I described, and can positively identify it, I'd be extremely grateful.

I've seen pictures from 02-03 of the recycle trucks they sold off - old Freightliners FL70s with ADR recycle bodies. They were all white with a turquoise stripe going across the body. If those are the trucks, they were actually old Western Waste/USA Waste trucks that WM got after all the merging during the late 1990s .
According to some contract documents on the City's website, WM was still servicing some portions of the City until 2007 which I guess is when they sold the operation to Recology.
I have some old bird's eye photos of both WM yards in San Jose (the landfill yard and the Rogers Street yard), both filled with white trucks. The Rogers Street yard had some white 320/Octos (FLs & ASLs) and also had some 320/Recyclers. The only green trucks look to be the commercial FELs, a sole 320/Octo, and a couple Volvo recyclers. The landfill yard has a smaller fleet; white Condor Wittkes and some 320 Octo ASLs and FLs and one burgundy WXLL Heil RL.
      Any of this sound familiar?

Yes! Those recycling trucks you described match my memories!
Where, per chance, did you find the pictures of the recycling trucks they sold off?
But yeah, the Amreps, I definitely remember.

Found them on SalvageSale. They are DEFINITELY the recycling trucks from my childhood!
Thank you so much for helping me solve this mystery. Now I can go to bed satisfied.

Typically they’re just called recycling bodies. They were phased out because they don’t compress the gathered materials therefore not as efficient.

It is always refreshing to see some manual collection. Those crates look a lot like our old silver state disposal crates. Great unloading shot too!

As I've beaten to death on every other Recycle One vid you've posted, these were my favorite to follow around as a kid. This video is my favorite yet though. Even though the earlier WXLLs in WM green were bang on what used to run in my neighborhood; this vid stands out since the driver totally hauls, paint scheme looks really cool as does the LET cab, and the sound of the trough banging around comes through really well. Takes me back to the magic of 8 yr old George on Saturday mornings stalking the recycler on his blue Mongoose with full suspension. Many feels. So thanks a lot for that.

I knew you'd be all kinds of stoked on this upload ;) Seriously though, I got all kinds of nostalgic feels myself chasing this truck. It's really just hit me in the last few months that these Recycle One's are truly a dying breed now, and it honestly gives me a case of the sadness. But, SSC still runs a solid 8-10 of these, a couple on LET's, the rest on LET2's, definitely made me happy to see these still running strong! WM still runs one last Recycle One here, on a Condor, which doesn't get me near as stoked as the old WXLL's, but still gives me more feels than the newer Labrie Top Select's that run the rest of the recycle routes here. I think the Condor/Recycle One only runs on Monday's though, I'll have to get off my lazy tush and go find it one of these days ;)
