In the 20th century, we were fortunate to witness the brilliance of extraordinary composers such as Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Debussy, Bernstein, Khachaturian, Skalkotas, Messiaen, and many others. Among them, Vangelis stands as a composer whom I deeply admire and love, whose works I consistently find great pleasure in listening to. He is undoubtedly a remarkable and singular talent. However, the notion of calling him “the best” strikes me as both dreadful and wholly inappropriate. Art is neither a race nor a competition; it cannot be measured in terms of "better" or "best." Vangelis will forever resonate through his magnificent body of work-not because he is "the best" or "the greatest," but because he is truly great in his own right. And, I daresay, he himself would chuckle at such a title.

This man saved my life and continues to save it every day. Every morning, I listen to his music as I get ready for the day, shower etc. On my morning walks and logs, I listen to his music. As a piano player/synth player, he has had a profound influence on me and my life. At 51 years old, his music has become a part of who I am.
Vangelis conquered my heart when I was about 11. I am 55 and I still love his music, one of my favorites is “Beside you”, with Jon Anderson singing. I hear you loud and clear about such influence in our lives! It’s nice to find someone who “understands” that feeling! ✌️

I first discovered this amazing artist when his music was featured in Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and what a delightful rabbit hole it has been.
I also discovered Vangelis through Cosmos. When I heard Alpha the first time on Cosmos, I was eyeing the credits to find out who composed that particular piece. I later discovered Antarctica, which is my most listened to album by far of any genre despite me having a very varied musical taste with many apparent favourites.
I too first came across Vangelis while watching Cosmos on BBC TV. I bought the album and it's one of my prized posessions. Almost mint condition too. Since then we had Blade Runner (beautiful), Chariots of course plus all the work he did with Jon Anderson. Soon after I found his concept albums. I love the audacity of Heaven & Hell. Searched the second hand markets and found many of these early albums for next to nothing. Still have them all.

As a 52 year old, Vangelis has been part of my life growing up.. Just fabulous music that transcends the soul.. The movie Blade Runner would not have been nearly as good without Vangelis and his music RIP V
Many years ago, I saw him play live in London, twice actually. To this day two of the most memorable concerts I've attended. Vangelis was an artiste of the highest order.
This needs to be watched many times to realise the genuine genius of vangelis. there are jems hidden in the ocean of this man. And im so glad he didnt go down the road of fame and fortune, but listened to his heart, a true stoic spirit.
I discovered Vangelis in 1972 and have followed his work as conscientiously as possible through his musical recordings. Didn't realize he was such a prolific visual artist as well. The documentary is wonderful and I am thankful to have lived in the same time as he; with his guidance, I believe I have glimpsed the infinite and thank him for that vision.
When he sits down at his keyboard and composes and orchestrates a complete score from his mind to his fingertips I just can barely believe what I'm seeing and hearing.
That's what all serious composers do. Nothing special or different. Indeed many great composers don't even need to sit at a keyboard. Mozart had complete scores in his mind and the hard work was committing the dots to paper.
This is a truly extraordinary film documenting Vangelis, the man, the music, the intense beauty and spirit - the love that he encapsulated in his vast body of work. I have many albums of his music, bought over decades, but, never until this documentary, have I been able to appreciate so completely the artist behind the music. Thank you so much for making this available to view on UA-cam, I have been completely in awe - not just for the music, but for this man, so modest and humble, yet at times a man troubled by his success - a maestro in every way :)

Vangelis seems very shy and introverted, modest here. But his inner extrovert came out in all it's wonderful glory when he composed and played his wonderful music.

Just from the very first minutes of this i feel like he never really understood how much of a legend he really is. Or maybe he didn't want to, which would be admirable. But his music has influenced my music and countless others to a degree barely anyone can imagine. He is basically the father of hybrid orchestral music, mixing synths with classical elements.

I know Papathanassiou from "Apocalypse des animaux" (1971), after that some movie melodies, in the group "Aphrodite Childs", also with the Greek/French singer Demis Roussos, it is sympathetic, like some other movie composers. To come back to the tittle of this video, in the XXth century, we got Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Messiaen, with who he can't be compared to.

My life is devided into before and after I heard your music of Chariots of fire Side B when I was a boy. While listening to that 30-min-long performance, I still remember feeling that this world would be different from what I see. As a keyboard player myself, Vangelis will always be “The” synth wizard. Unlike most well-known pioneers in synth-based music (which I also admire a lot), Vangelis always tried to make beautiful sounding sounds and tracks, showing that it was played by a human being, with loads of emotions. Although he used sequencers and programmed parts on several songs, he would then add layers of real-time performance, as it if was played on any acoustic instrument or vocals. He never tried to be the fastest kid on the block, he never tried to use visual gimmicks to _look_ impressive while playing (sorry, JMJ 😉), because he only seemed to care about _sounding_ musical. Many people know several songs from him, but could never identify him on a photograph, because that was never important to him. This also means that there’s a lot less interviews and “behind the scenes” from him, but he left an amazing quantity of great music, and a big lesson about humility! 🙏
The great thing is that automatic music or midi transcription is now simple... hopefully his compositions can be captured. An inspiring composer and musician. Maestro.
Goosebumps music, a wonderful modest man, another Mozart, he heard it in his head and just played it. I have loved his music all my adult life, I bought 666 when it came out in 1972 and I still have it. So sorry he has gone.
Big fan, he is unique in my eyes and his music is of such organic beauty, it always touches me. What strikes me about the documentary is that there are some people around him with dollar signs in their eyes. Vangelis stays true to himself and, on the other hand, does not allow himself to be distracted by nonsense. He is full of wisdom.

Once I fell down the rabbit hole of listening to more and more of Vangelis' material, there was no coming back for me. One of the very few composers whose music always left an emotional mark on me after hearing it. Genius is a word that can be overused somewhat nowadays, but I'd certainly apply it to this man. What a legacy he has left behind.

I've just watched roughly a third of the documentary, but I had to pause it to comment how amazing it is so far. Pretty much everyone who appears here have really interesting opinions or insights about Vangelis and on top of that, being able to listen Vangelis himself explaining his vision, etc., wow, it's fantastic. This could sound weird but it gives me sadness to see his studio, all that gear not being used anymore now that he's gone. I'm wondering if it's kept just like he left it, almost like a museum? Or maybe nobody ever enters in that room and it's the equivalent of a ghost town. I hope it's well preserved just out of respect for his genius.

Brilliant interview. I've known of Vangelis forever, but didn't know much about him. Appears to be a wise man with much knowledge and a fantastic life experience. Oh and what genius too🤣 I'm a musician with an interest in electronic synthesizers, samplers, drum machines etc but how he does what he does is another level

As a keyboard player myself, Vangelis will always be “The” synth wizard.
Unlike most well-known pioneers in synth-based music (which I also admire a lot), Vangelis always tried to make beautiful sounding sounds and tracks, showing that it was played by a human being, with loads of emotions.
Although he used sequencers and programmed parts on several songs, he would then add layers of real-time performance, as it if was played on any acoustic instrument or vocals.
He never tried to be the fastest kid on the block, he never tried to use visual gimmicks to _look_ impressive while playing (sorry, JMJ 😉), because he only seemed to care about _sounding_ musical.
Many people know several songs from him, but could never identify him on a photograph, because that was never important to him.
This also means that there’s a lot less interviews and “behind the scenes” from him, but he left an amazing quantity of great music, and a big lesson about humility! 🙏
I'm almost speechless. Vangelis is and has been my all time favorite since the first time I heard him.
I love Vangelis and his music. His soundtrack for Blade Runner and The Bounty are some of my faves.
The great thing is that automatic music or midi transcription is now simple... hopefully his compositions can be captured. An inspiring composer and musician. Maestro.
Goosebumps music, a wonderful modest man, another Mozart, he heard it in his head and just played it. I have loved his music all my adult life, I bought 666 when it came out in 1972 and I still have it. So sorry he has gone.
Big fan, he is unique in my eyes and his music is of such organic beauty, it always touches me. What strikes me about the documentary is that there are some people around him with dollar signs in their eyes. Vangelis stays true to himself and, on the other hand, does not allow himself to be distracted by nonsense. He is full of wisdom.
That is one hell of a studio ! ! 28:04 His keyboards with all those controllers is mindblowing ! a one man orchestra!

Once I fell down the rabbit hole of listening to more and more of Vangelis' material, there was no coming back for me. One of the very few composers whose music always left an emotional mark on me after hearing it. Genius is a word that can be overused somewhat nowadays, but I'd certainly apply it to this man. What a legacy he has left behind.

Not even a chance dude ennio was good but not so good as Vangelis.
Vangelis was really ahead of his time and he found electronic , ambient etc .
He was the one who got bunch of awards.

I've just watched roughly a third of the documentary, but I had to pause it to comment how amazing it is so far. Pretty much everyone who appears here have really interesting opinions or insights about Vangelis and on top of that, being able to listen Vangelis himself explaining his vision, etc., wow, it's fantastic.
This could sound weird but it gives me sadness to see his studio, all that gear not being used anymore now that he's gone. I'm wondering if it's kept just like he left it, almost like a museum? Or maybe nobody ever enters in that room and it's the equivalent of a ghost town. I hope it's well preserved just out of respect for his genius.
