    This is the best review of UBW that I've watched! Great job! The skits were hilarious, your voice was enjoyable and the presentation was very well done!

    Not to mention Shiro actually HAS a personality. I mean, he FEELS like a person and not just "im the main hero" even if he still does the main hero shtick

    The writer of the Visual Novel stated he would have to rewrite the Fate route in order for it to ever be adapted into a good anime, and that it would probably never happen. I'd be more excited if Ufotable did Fate/hallow ataraxia some day.

      Josephor Well i head somewhere if both ubw and heaven's feel route adaptations did well (ubw really did) they would make hollow ataraxia as an adaptaion (just rumours maybe not sure)

      +Josephor i love HA but honestly, can you imagine an anime made out of it? it'll be pretty hard since it's very far from the traditional novel story telling but i would love to see them try, also i want fate/apocrypha!!!

      +Hawmaro I agree that it would be rather hard to animate, but I think that ufotable could do it. They just have to say what day it is in subtitles or something

    Nerdword Entertainment
    Great review, I liked it the whole way through, but I do have some things to say. "I do wish that the series took more creative liberties with its plot."
    "More time spent on developing the other masters, servants, villains, and lesser characters in this universe, thus creating a single independent story with its own identity." "I feel like that would make this series to be even better as a sequel to Fate/Zero." Hmmm, UBW is not really a sequel to F/Z, Fate/Stay Night as a collective is. The director actually took a lot of creative liberties in the second season, going as far as to alter stuff from the VN sometimes(which wasn't exactly favorable because it actually took out backstories that did flesh out some characters in the VN.) As a VN reader, the overall pacing of the second season was way too fast for my liking(excluding episodes 20,21, 24, and 25.) A lot of impact was lost by taking out Caster's backstory and replacing it with something that didn't flesh her out nearly as much, and some scenes felt like they didn't have much buildup(referring to some scenes in cour 2.) If they wanted to make a single independent story, then they would make an anime original FSN route that fleshes out all of the servants/masters/villains/important side characters, but an adaptation of a single route is not for that, and I feel like it makes sense that everyone isn't fleshed out, since we're getting a Heaven's Feel adaptation, and although there hasn't been a faithful Fate adaptation, the only character that really gets fleshed out in that route is Saber. However, I do hope that they flesh out characters more in the HF adaptation, even though many characters get fleshed out in HF. "Considering its routes, this series is better than it has any right to be." I don't mean to sound ungrateful(because it's a faithful adaptation for the most part and a very good anime), but it could be incredibly better if it got a different, more skilled director. "How 'bout they just do a movie of the Fate route while they're at it? That way we can have definitive animated versions of all three routes, all together as the complete FSN saga." That would be AMAZING! Sadly, that won't happen for a long time if it does, because Ufotable already said that if UBW sells a certain amount of copies, they would adapt Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, the sequel to Fate/Stay Night, and if they adapt Fate/Hollow Ataraxia after Heaven's Feel, it wouldn't make sense for them to go back and adapt the first route. Maybe they'll change their plans and adapt the Fate route instead, though. "I hope you guys have enjoyed this review." I sure have ^_^
    "And I honestly can't choose a favorite between them." Thank you, so many people try to compare the two, but they're two different kinds of stories and they're both great.
    Sorry for the really long comment, it turned out to be way longer than I expected. Have a great day/afternoon/night and look forward to the greatness that is Heaven's Feel :D

  • @cody89ner
    @cody89ner 9 років тому +3

    Honestly, I don't think its issues lies with the fact that it tried to be faithful to the source material (which it does but very inconsistently), but because it didn't know if it wanted to be a sequel tailored to the fans of Zero or a proper adaptation made primarily for the die hard fans of the novel, which resulted in an overall lack of identity.
    While I certainly approve of them giving more screen time for some of the other masters/servants to flesh them out more than their brief roles they had in the VN, it's pretty disappointing to see them achieve that, yet still not giving Shirou aka the main character, the proper characterization that he deserves. This is especially true for UBW since almost everything in this route revolves around him, his outlook on life and his ideals.
    Unlike Fate zero which had the advantage of giving the spotlight to multiple characters each with their own distinct ideologies and personalities (which encourages the viewer to at least cheer for one of them), the overall success and appeal of UBW relies a lot on the viewer's ability to understand and get behind Shirou's character. If that doesn't happen then the whole thing arguably crumbles under it and I can't really blame new viewers for not "understanding him" since it's mainly due to the anime that does a sloppy job at portraying his character and not because of their lack of perceptiveness.

    • @Swift69420
      @Swift69420 9 років тому +1

      Dany Heatley Answer was ALMOST done correct, but they threw Shirou's revelation from episode 20 out of the window in the next episode. There was no foundation at all in his revelation, no monologue to back it up after presenting itself.

    • @EvilSapphireR
      @EvilSapphireR 9 років тому

      In all honesty that was doomed to happen since most of Shirou's characterization in the VN happens in form of inner monologue which is something you can not adapt faithfully in an anime series.

    • @cody89ner
      @cody89ner 9 років тому

      EvilSapphireR That's not quite true though. Fate Zero did a great job at giving us some insight on what Kerry's thinking when the show needed to and that series had a broader focus than FSN.

    • @EvilSapphireR
      @EvilSapphireR 9 років тому

      Dany Heatley Honestly I don't think I would've ever understood Kiritsugu's motivation had it not been for those two flashback episodes. In case of Shirou, the only two defining events that they could go back to were the day he was saved and the night Kiritsugu died, and Ufotable did their best to make the viewer well versed with the emotions played out in those two scenes by providing flashbacks to them more than once.

    I'm unsure about the upcomming Heaven's Feel adaptaion since I don't really like Sakura all that much (and *not* as a love interest). Actually, Rin is the only one I can take seriously as a love interest for Shirou. I think Saber is awesome but she's just not romantic material to me and I think she's simultaniously too different and too similar to Shirou. I feel like Rin can support him in his basic ideals but still challange them and call him out on his bullshit whenever he takes them too far.

  • @TyronMakeka

    I would have preferred them same formula from Fate Zero. That each character was giving the spotlight to flesh out their story and background.
    I am especially saddened that Hercules was made almost a mindless beast. Where you could have given him a harsh yet honorable warrior personality with a pinch of kindness. They could have refereed to how in his mythology he killed his wive and kids in madness and swore to atone himself. And that could give context for his reason to cooperate with his master because he saw a daughter in her and in turn she saw a father in him.
    This show was pretty to look at. It had action, amazing animation and good actors to boot. But it lacked personality.
    Vibrant characters like the ones from Fate Zero. Some of them you loved other you hated but above all these characters were entertaining and engaging. Especially because of how they interacted with each other.
    Regardless of my opinions, good review! I like your style have a like :)

      +TyronMakeka well, blame the original writer of UBW, Kinoko Nasu for classifying him as berserker. And isnt the backstory of Illya X Berserker enough to make people understand that he actually does have a mind of its own to think and save illya with his own will. i mean, if you compare that, berserker lancelot from fate zero was COMPLETELY mindless with no rational thinking.

      E G E G galindo well, im not talking about the VERY end. im talking about like how the servants communicated with their masters and stuff. Lancelot was completely berserk. If it wasnt for the command seals, he would shurly be out of control. Hercales berserker on the other hand was always "rational" with his actions in combat and didnt do anythingradical, having somewhat of a rational mindset before and during the holy grail.

    Gotta say, my introduction to this series was this show.
    I already knew it was based off of an eroge, and was expecting a typical harem show (I mean it has traces of it present).
    But man was I wrong, I think I've re-watched it 3 times in the past 2 years.
    Like the characters were so memorable, that I just wanted to know more and more about them after finishing the show.
    And my mind was blown when I went to watch Fate/Zero afterwards, and was bombarded with a lot of context for things in Unlimited Blade Works.
    I still need to get around to playing the Visual Novel.
    Honestly I'm kind of jealous the Sonic Adventure games doesn't get the same treatment as this show.
    This kind of adaptation would be perfect for those two stories, with the same kind of care.
    Instead of what Sonic X did.

    Not a doubt in my mind, the 3 best fights in this series were Gilgamesh v. Heracles, Shiro v. Archer, and Shiro v. Gilgamesh. Also, it should say something about UFOtable that the only thing that has me worried about Heaven's Feel is the pacing simply given the run time of theatrical films.

  • @sangiorgio5419
    @sangiorgio5419 9 років тому +1

    why do you think that villans are not well described ?They did a great job focusing on caster, gilgamesh and beserker , it is true that some of them have a minor role but that's because their story is told in another route, you cannot expect to cover ALL of them in a single anime .One more question , did you play the visual novel?

  • @Alfenheimer
    @Alfenheimer 8 років тому

    'The villains don't get fleshed out as much... I guess that's what the other routes are for.' Nice thought but the other servants got as much fleshing out as possible in this one. Fate focused on Shirou and Saber. UBW got everyone in the neutral zone and all servants (cept Rider) Then HF fleshes out on every 'evil' character + Ilya and Rider.

    I wanted to like UBW but I felt like half of what they were talking about was just gibberish. Anytime Shirou got into a conversation with someone about his ideals it just sounded like nonsense, talking in circles, not actually saying anything, especially the conversations with Archer. I enjoyed it but too many times I found myself thinking ''wait, what is he actually trying to say? :S''
    The action scenes made up for all those silly conversations though :)

    @arkenzaru3973 9 років тому

    I agree mostly with your review but the only problem I have is regarding the example you cited for pacing issues. If you'd ask me, the pacing problem during Shirou VS Archer was not really that apparent and is actually logical that they would actually talk/fight for that long. Put yourselves in their shoes.
    Shirou: believes in nothing but saving others and putting their lives above his for 10 whole years.
    Archer: suffered for almost all eternity since the thrones of heroes are outside of the confinement of time because of a silly 'mistake' he made when he was still you know who. And then he's forced to look at Shirou committing the same mistakes he did.
    It's only natural both of them would actually fight for that long because otherwise can you imagine either one of them giving way to each other? Just like a debate, they have to give their points of view etc etc alongside with why the insists on their own motivations and goals. That's why I don't think the Archer VS Shirou fight was drawn out.
    However on the other hand, the show focuses too much on the god damn useless scenes like cooking and the date scene which has lesser significant impact than some of the other scenes that they cut out. Don't get me wrong but I'm not saying those scenes are not important but they are of lesser importance. As a VN reader myself, I doubt 25 episodes is actually enough to cover everything if Ufotable truly wants to have a faithful adaptation, but then again, it might just be a problem with the difference in medium. One obvious cut that Ufotable had to make due to time constraint was when the first time Archer used UBW and it abruptly transitioned back to the church.

    The whole franchise looks really cool, and I definitely want to start watching it, but I'm not sure which one is better for newcomers.

    • @TheGuyOverThere99
      @TheGuyOverThere99 8 років тому

      +Zero Wat (Absolute Zero) I might be too late, but honestly, starting with either one is fine. What I did was start with Fate/Zero and then watched UBW. If you start with Fate/Zero, you can see the events unfold in chronological order, but if you start with UBW, you can see what the original story is meant to be and when you watch Fate/Zero after, you'll have that "aha" moment of seeing how some of the characters of UBW came to be. Either one is okay for newcomers because they both let the audience understand the concept and plot. You could watch Fate/Zero first because its first episode gives a ton of information about the Holy Grail War, or UBW first, since its story is easier to follow for newcomers (Fate/Zero isn't tough, just a tad confusing at first) If you decide to go with Fate/Zero, keep in mind that the first couple episodes are a little slow pacing-wise, but if you pay attention and keep going, you'll be rewarded. Have fun! Easily the best animes I've ever seen.

    Don't know if i misinterpreted something, but it sounded like you thought that F/Z anime was an original concept. Well, if you did your research, then you should know that it's an adaptation of a Light Novel. And it's very loyal to the original source material. As far as i remember, only some excessive gore and other more.. hmm. Vivid details were left out. Basically, the Anime adaptation was a censored version, but without leaving any important plot related things out.

      Finnish Person I know it was a light novel first. I just didn't touch on that here, but only for the sake of keeping the intro more concise. Also, by "original concept," I meant the concept of the holy grail war in general, and how Fate/zero delivered on the potential it presented.

    Fate belong to a universe of series know as the nasuverse. There are many more novels of fate franchise, and series from the same universe ( Kara no Kyokai for a example) . that's series intertwine with each other. Type-moon is fucking awesome. Sorry for the bad english i from Chile.

    Help please. I watched Fate/Zero few months ago. Now I want to watch "season two/ sequel" or whatever you wanna call it. I found fate/stay night and fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. which one should I watch and how many episodes each one has? thx

    • @BranFlaixx
      @BranFlaixx  9 років тому +1

      Sierra 117 Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] is the way to go. It ties in with Fate/zero, so it feels like a proper sequel. It's also better than the 2006 Fate/stay night in every way. There's really no reason to watch that one.

    • @mordredpendragon9451

      +FoxOther NarutoFan The routes are meant to be read (or watched) in the order: Fate>Unlimited Blade Works>Heaven's Feels and then you are supposed to watch Fate/Zero.
      But, since the Fate route doesn't have a good anime, ufotable(the studio who are creating the animes) wants you to watch it like this: Zero>Unlimited Blade Works>Heaven's Feels. (Note: Watching Zero first spoils Heaven's Feels.)

    • @_dhfilms
      @_dhfilms 8 років тому

      +Mordred Pendragon thank you, isn't there two animes of fate stay night? One called fate stay night and the other fate stay night unlimited blades work, because the fate stay night one was the very first one I saw :/ I'm sorry if I'm confusing lol, it's just I really wanna get this XD

    • @mordredpendragon9451
      @mordredpendragon9451 8 років тому

      Yep. The first one you are referring to is Fate/Stay Night(2006). It primarily covered the Fate route, but it took bits from the other routes to help it stand on it's on. It's recommended to at least read the visual novel for that route instead. If you really don't want to read, watching it would be better (be warned, it isn't that great. The music is probably the best thing).
      Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (Anime series, Do not watch the movie) ended early this year. Covered the second route and that's what this review covers. It's intended to be watched after you have read/watched the Fate route, but the studio made it so if you didn't, and you watched Fate/Zero first instead, you would be fine. Just keep an open mind when you watch both Zero and Stay Night. They were written by different authors with different intentions.
      Sorry for wall of text. :P

    wait... just dont get it, i watch fate/stay night then i watched fate/stay night ubw, why there is no something like a continuation of the series? should it be season 2? Watching the second season after the first one feels a lot odd, its like a different plotting and same time when the holy grail is summoned, but a different story telling, eg. first season, shirou loves saber but second season, shirou loves tohsaka?? Please enlighten me up, waste of my time watching the second season...

    • @TheLocalMoonman
      @TheLocalMoonman 9 років тому

      +Nick Firdaus Ok, your comment is confusing me. let me clear up some things you might be confused about.
      The first anime adaptation: Fate/Stay Night was the first route of the Visual Novel, called "Fate," which focuses its heroine as Saber and with the love relation ship tied into with Shirou.
      FSN UBW, season 1 never showed Shirou's interest in saber except for episode 001 where he blushes a little when saber was just summoned. Apart from those few seconds from teh first season, it was entirley about the love relationship getting deepened with Rin.
      The second season as you have watched, is also about Rin and Shirou.
      Never was the love relationship between the heroines of the characters mixed up. And dont say it was a waste of time watching season 2 when it is your fault of not understanding fully when it was laid out pretty cleary about which pair was being shipped in the anime.
      Hope this clears up your confusion. Have a nice day :D

      +Nerdword Entertainment When I first heard of the Fate series earlier this year, I started with Zero and after finishing UNW, I did some thinking and I really should've started with UBW because it Zero did give some plot points of mystery away in UBW but I don't regret the decision either way.

      Haikyuu is an intense sports volleyball anime that kept me literally standing instead of on my chair because the matches were so hype.
      Higurashi is a psychological horror anime involving time-loops where everyone dies over and over again.
      Shinsekai Yori is a drama coming-of-age anime, that starts somewhat slow but really picks up into easily the best ending in anime and is a masterpiece in my eyes.

    the fights in this show are so overrated, the fighters moved so friggin fast I couldn't tell wtf the fighters were doing, the fighs were also short and had re-used animations, and when I put them in slow motion, there was no frame of the weapons touching just one fighter bouncing off from the other fighter supposedly striking him and him defending with his weapon (although they never friggin connected!)

    • @42Caio
      @42Caio 7 років тому

      I agree. Ufotable also makes some fights too fucking flashy for their own good.
      Like the Gilgamesh vs Shirou fight, Shirou in the source material never do elaborate moves or clashes swords like that. He overpowers Gil more by being able to throw swords faster.
      There are a few good moves in some fights, but when it happens, it's a dodge. As you said, the weapons don't clash as much as bounce around in this. Fate/Zero fighting choreography was much better in that regard;
