It's been a long time coming, but Sonic Forces is finally here, and I sure do have a lot to say about it. How does it hold up, and where does Sonic Team go from here? Watch and find out!
Well damn, I wasn’t prepared for that speech at the end. That hit the heartstrings deep, mate. This is definitely a review I can FULLY agree with. However, there is one thing: adding the Avatar instead of Boom Sonic was a WAAAAAY better idea. Boom Sonic needs to stay far away from Modern Sonic. VERY FAR AWAY.
Basically, Sonic Forces is just plain disappointing. The story is lackluster, villains are poorly used, Infinite is just a shitty Mephiles wannabe, Tails is useless and his character is ruined, Classic Sonic shouldn't be here, the game play is worse than past entries, the soundtrack is disappointing since nothing really stands out other than the White Jungle remix and Nullspace. Honestly, I'd rather play Sonic 06 than Forces.
I agree with 85% of what you’re saying (I enjoy most of the music in this game and the overall game is objectively better than 06 imo) but we’re all on the same side of Sonic Forces being a straight up disappointment.
Some of the best Sonic games ever made were made when direct user feedback wasn’t available. People say that Sega doesn’t listen to the fans, but I think they’re doing too much listening. The character customization, Classic Sonic, as well as references to the classic/adventure/modern games seems like they’re trying to please everyone, while in the process, pleasing no one. It seems like Sonic Team’s creativeness has gone completely dry and they are only able to listen to user feedback as their creative source. I don’t want Sega and/or Sonic Team to listen to the fans. I want them to get creative again. Take risks. Have fun with the franchise. I just want the passion back.
This is the most beautiful review I had ever seen for Sonic Forces and I fully agree with your ending speech. After 4 years of development. I do not think this is what Sonic Team had planned. Even though I don't hate the game, I am still very disappointed. My biggest problem is about Infinite. I thought he would be the edgy Mepalis type sonic character, but I take it back. Shadow from Shadow The Hedgehog and Mephalis are the edgiest sonic characters. Mephalis is even rather my most favorite and most challenging sonic villain Sonic and friends had ever faced. I didn't actually hate classic sonic, I would actually like to see classic sonic in future modern sonic games, he was just there for the continuation of Sonic Mania. You could just give him a bigger spotlight, but he ended up unnecessary. And also, NO SUPER SONIC IN THE STORY. Sure, you can unlock him, but that makes Infinite a weakling because the heroes can beat them in their base form. In sonic heroes, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles turn super and took down Neo Metal sonic. Infinite should've been more smarter and grab all seven chaos emeralds. Love the soundtrack, love the design and love the story.
It's been long enough for Sega and Sonic Team to pay attention to what people are saying online about their work... if the next 3D Sonic game isn't great, they are doomed!
Dominic Greer It's not that they're not listening. It's just that they're doing too much. I mean, with Classic Sonic and the character customization, It seems that they were trying to please everyone at once, but because the fanbase is so split, it's kinda sad that this game was a let-down, and with Mania getting high scores and being praised by fans as " the game everyone wanted for 20 years" etc., it just made forces overshadowed and look even worse. I actually feel bad for Sega... :(
Dominic Greer They're not gonna make an Adventure 3. Those two games were made several years ago. I think its a little too late for that... Speaking of SA, i heard a lot of people talking about it but i never got the chance to play it. Is it good? :)
Yes really good despite aging a little poorly, but as far as early 2000's games go I'd say everybody should try both Adventure games out. As for Adventure 3 when I said they should make "Sonic Adventure 3" I really meant they should make an "Adventure 3-like game" because the Adventure gameplay formula is probably the best 3D style along with Unleashed and Generations, but the Boost formula is getting old. That's really all fans mean when they say they want Sonic Adventure 3... it's not the title or name of the game that matters.
Ah, Sonic Forces. I haven't played this game, but from watching playthroughs of it, I have gotten the idea that this game was something that promised way more than it was able to deliver. Sonic Team's heart and soul just wasn't in this project. A real shame. Sonic Mania was such a huge hit, everybody, including myself, wanted this game to knock it out of the park and make this a truly fantastic year for the hypersonic hero. I guess that was too tall an order. I didn't want this game to break my heart, but it succeeded in doing so. Every new piece of information Sega released for Sonic Forces gave me such a good feeling, too. It sucks even more that this game turned out the way it did after how badly Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric tanked. Still, we got at least ONE great video game from the blue blur in 2017, and we got a new comic book series coming our way in 2018. There's still reasons to be a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, and i've known the wise-cracking spiny mammal long enough that realize there's still greatness to be found in the series. If he could climb out of dark times once, he can do it again, if we have the right people for the job. People with creativity, enthusiasm and game design talent.
I mostly agree with everything you said. The game is flawed, but I can't call it bad. The fact I'm returning to it attempting to get that Platinum trophy already sets it WAY above Lost World, which I didn't even look back at once I finished it. I'm not sure if I prefer Forces or Unleashed, but I see both as experiments in order to see what works in order to move on to better things. Mania is without question the better of the two games, but Forces was still a fun time for me. I've heard that a lot of people who worked on this game are new to the franchise, so maybe they need another chance now that they got their feet wet(Weird analogy, I'm aware) and hopefully that will lead to better games. One thing you said I'm not sure about is Tezuka handing the reins, mostly because I don't know who can take over... I couldn't agree more on the last few words of this video. Sonic has been my favorite character for a reason and I'll always be there for him as long as he's around. Here's hoping he could only improve from here on out.
I love how so many people are pretty unanimous with after playing this game they just feel that sonic team should should have a new leader or just just let someone else make a new modern sonic game. I was more excited for this game then Sonic mania and hell even the new super mario but holly crap this was sucha disappointment.
I'm so glad you acknowledged the fact that the game was a "massive failure" Don't forget the load of false advertising BS! EDIT: To list a few things that we never received: "A major plot twist involving infinite", "Tails does not die... Another character will die however", You've seen Infinite before now, but it's not what you are expecting", "Classic Sonic has a new game changing gameplay mechanic", etc... Looking back over these now, I don't know that any of them were stated by Sega but were "leaks" rather from Sonic Stadium in which case you can't really blame Sega. At the same time, I guess it's possible that Sega had to scrap some of these ideas during development but the former seems more likely to me. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don’t know if you can call it false advertising but still, considering what Sega DID actually say regarding the game, it was still somewhat deceiving, a major disappointment, and tantamount to failure. EDIT2: Some of the comments in here are annoying af (continue at your own headache)
A massive failure is pretty hyperbolic, boom, lost world, 06, forces is miles above them, yes it's a letdown but not a massive failure. also, what false advertising? Having a plot twist isn't exactly false advertising, and the 'lie' would boil down to character traits, so if that's how you judge false advertising then most sonic games fall under that category.
+arock32497 We were never said to have a boss battle with shadow or chaos, plus the answer to why shadow was here was more or less was "we have an explanation" And to hold on to a small plot point and call it false advertising is overboard.
They were hyping up the returning villains and 2 of them don't get bossfights you don't think that's even a little bit of false advertisment like honestly.
Honestly, at this point, Sonic Team should not be the ones trusted with making Sonic games anymore. Sonic Mania proved that even an independent company can make better games than they can, so they should just sell Sonic to a more reliable company (*cough*Nintendo*cough*) and just be done with it, and hopefully save Sonic's reputation for good.
Unknown V or they could hire more staff that grew up with the series. The fans are the ones that really experienced the feel of Sonic from the get go. Use similar methods that Yuji Naka used to study momentum physics.
Nintendo wouldn't care to invest enough onto Sonic, they have their mascot that they're passionate towards. They won't be as passionate or caring toward a character that was sold to them. (imo)
The more Eggman loses, the less sane he gets. I will be not surprised if one day he uses all of his previous plans in one giant clusterfuck just to defeat Sonic and his friends.
Why does everyone keep saying that the boost formula can't not have copious amounts of automation? Sonic Generations had hardly any! It can be done right.
GalaxyProductions every sonic game has one or two main amazing cutscenes, and that's all for unleashed, forces had almost the same quality for every one of them, and that was a very good quality
Ayyy shout out to breaking street dates and leaking like an asshole. Good vid man, well thought out and thorough. I really wish Sonic Team would clean up their act one of these days and stop straying the way they do.
U know I was getting worried in the first 14 min because u were "praising" the game but then I saw I Brian I knew after that 14 min mark. Still, it was nice hearing someone sound optimistic about the game and not bash it like everyone else.
If you think that elise kissing sonic was the most cringeworthy thing to come out of sonic... It probably still is but that final battle cutscene is real close.
Whatever it is, it better not be as below average as this. Sonic Team need to change around their staff and get rid of the damn Boost Formula. Their current direction isn't working at all. Nakamura needs to never work on a Sonic Game ever again, btw.
Monkey D. "Straw Hat" Luffy Hey put him on Samba de Amigo or Rhythm Thief Sequel. He's done great Rhythm games. Instead of Square Pegs of staff into Circular holes
mechashadow Exactly. That's where his strengths lie. Not in Sega's flagship series, which in terms of his major contributions to it, show that he doesn't understand it in the slightest. There are reliable guys at Sonic Team that would serve much better as Directors and Producers for future games, like Tetsu Katano and Hiroshi Miyamoto. And in terms of the director of Sonic Team in general, I believe Akinori Nishiyama would be the best guy for it.
arock32497 It's shallow. And it can't stand on his own, that's why the Werehog it's the longest of the two Unleashed gameplay, and that's why there is Classic Sonic in Generations and Forces as well. They just can't make a FULL Boost game without a gimmick or an alternate gameplay.
They could they just don't same with most other 3d sonic games they ALWAYs include another gameplay style. I don't think it's shallow, as generations proves and the later levels in unleashed the boost formula can indeed have expansive level design that's actually fun for example Modern seaside hill and Sky scraper scamper ( Empire city day )
I agree with you on this video. Sonic needs fresh talent, a new take, something different. And a year ago, I would've said that'd never happen. But I can see it. Bring in fan game makers, indie developers, new people with new ideas. But, who knows if that will happen. SEGA always tends to get the wrong idea from fans, which is understandable given the fandom's fractured state. But they need to get it right.
This was the first game I wrote a 40 page review for, and I'm writing even more for it on a separate video. It's just that bad and I couldn't watch any reviews before I finished the game and wrote up my thoughts. If anyone's interested (Nerdword Entertainment included), I can link you the review (short and long versions) but I won't post it without permission first as I don't want this to seem like an ad. I'm not a content creator or anything like that, I just had a lot of thoughts on this game and I want to share them with people. I am now going to watch this review and I doubt I'll be disappointed.
Totally agree with this Let Christen Whitehead and the rest of team continue to do retro style classics because they are amazing! Playing them non-stop strongly proves how they retained the hype, fun and its fans! I rally hope that they do Mania 2, 3 (and Knuckles) especially throw in Ice Cap snowboarding level, Metropolis Acts 1-3, the mech metal sonic from Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles and a new Big Arm style boss to scare the crap out of us XD Would definitely love to see what they come up with... After seeing Forces, it is such a shame to let a game that had the potential to bring a decent 3D Sonic game go to waste. They had the villains and some-what-the-plot-as-well-ideas but they clearly did not think this through leading to such disappointment. Example, for the Zavok fight, why have him on a bee bot thing shooting things? Would it not been better to have him go one on one against Sonic? (like Adventure 2 bosses where you had to rely on skill and how you handle the character) Now that would have been interesting to see! Still have the running segments like with Infinite but again, a one on one battle in the ring would be very intense. Come on, having a small group made Mania surpasses and sells more than a large organisation who made Forces? That is so messed up and it is total ludicrous! Keep the music team and visuals but other than that, alter everything else in Sonic Team department because their methods isn't working to satisfy the franchise... If you really want Sonic to make a huge come back make Sonic Adventure 3 for 30th Anniversary, bring in all super hyper forms all characters playable online and in game, new levels and free falling, keep Sonic 3D like Adventure and its original mechanics (I swear the jumping system the later Sonic games really shows how low Sonic can jump! At last SA2 Battle when you played as Amy can jump decently high and can get to alternative pathways). Boss fight must be challenging like Sonic vs Shadow fights as well bringing VS mode! For God's sake there are so many people out there who have made fantastic stuff and I have to say majority of them stand out way better than Sonic Forces from my point of view... HIRE THEM AND MAKE THEM DO THEIR MAGIC!!! You did it with Mania and if only now you do the same with 3D Sonic games we would most likely foresee success...
Sonic Forces actually didn't have enough time to make. Sonic Forces was supposed tie into the Sonic the Hedgehog movie coming in 2019. That's why Chaos doesn't have a fight, because he's supposedly the main villian in that movie, but SEGA got impatient and rushed it for the holidays. It's not that they're exhausted with the series, they simply didn't have enough time to finish this game. I'm really dissapointed that literally every single Sonic game ever made, except for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, has been rushed. It's the sad hard truth, and I hope that this trend finally dies and we get a proper, fully finished Sonic game of any type. Sonic's kept me around through the darkest of times, it's only fair that I, no, WE, do the same. As Eggman said: "The anticipation of the end is worse than the end itself."
WTF are you talking about they literally had 4 fucking years to make a good game, and what do they do with all that time waste it on a stupid engine nobody ask for. They could of just used the old one a make a decent game, but as always they had to fuck it up
FukMothering Vampire And as usual, an argument isn't fully thought about, like mine. If you read the entire thing, and actually thought about what I said, then you'd understand what I'm saying.
Manuel Alberto Romero It's rumor as of now. Perydaremy has a whole video on. That's why I said was supposed to. The two were supposed to be released together, but as I said, the game was rushed, and Sonic team weren't given enough time to truely finish.
Some of this i agree. I'd rather play mania or anything before colors. I think the team needs to 1 bring back playable characters other than sonic. like tails, knuckles, shadow, silver etc. better levels n a better storyline.
I reckon with the presence of Mania Team, Sonic Team will be able to move away from rehashing old idea's and make something original. I still think ST have the potential to make a game that will blow us away like Mania did. If the next entry doesn't really improve upon Forces that much, SEGA will have to restructure ST. Keep the style of story, graphics and bring back the level designer from Generations. Here's to Sonic's next 3D outing
Manuel Alberto Romero Maybe they can allow the player to choose between Adventure style and Modern style gameplay, like the skills shop in Generations allowed the different abilities to be equipped
I agree with you mostly. I think the concept of the game is really novel but the execution of the story is pretty piss-poor. Oh well though, at least the character customization is fun!
Nolan McCool I assume they tried to keep the story a bit light hearted so that many critiques won't call the gsme "too dark for Sonic", but yeah, the story would've been a lot better and deeper.
Great review and conclusion. Pretty much my thoughts down to a T The reason for classic sonic his awful physics is because (according to the game files) they took sonic lost world and built classic sonic of off that with an automatic run button
because sonic team is split into two teams team A did unleashed and Gens and Lost World and forces was handled by Team B along with new comers both teams don't really share assets
And I heard that a lot of Team A Sonic team developers left them to go work on Mario&Sonic Olympic titles and Nintendo games. It's like Sega were not paying them properly or they're not interested in making Sonic games anymroe.
Personally I liked this game more than pretty much everyone and me and only a small group of my friends have been the only ones to see it as one of the best 3D Sonic games ever made. But looking at it from a different perspective, I do think that this game should have come out before Mania. Of that had happened then people would perhaps be a bit less harsh on it and then the praise for Mania would have brought Sonic's reputation back up to a good comfortable spot. Sadly that wasn't what happened. But I am glad to see someone with a more fair perspective on this game compared to some other people. And much like you I intend to stay with this series through it's ups and it's downs till it's over.
Good job. I agree with everything you say. Sonic Unleashed was the last good sonic game(probably gens too but it's pretty shallow). Sonic Team's artist, composers and animators should work on Sonic games, and should not work on gameplay and story. Story and gameplay should go to another company because those two are really important for Sonic. Sonic team just seem to care more about presentation now at days.
What you said at the end was very passionate and have to say I agree I hope this character lives on for as long as possible and i hope for greatness in the future. I don't know how long it will take but I'm going to stay a fan to the end even if things go bad theres always hope for this blue hedgehog named Sonic.
MudanTV from what I looked up, the engine was Hedgehog Engine 2. Basically a better version of the one used in Unleashed.... Ut I'll be honest, Unleashed looks miles better..
Certainly can't agree with the story part, especially when playing levels. You are TOLD things are happening but you never see it, and you never see anyone else in-level doing things. No other soldiers, no other main characters. Just one of the large issues the story had (not to mention the many many plotholes).
This video is so good bro! The only time where you honestly urked me was with the kinda predictable 'the boost formula is dying' (you obviously didn't say it like that). Personally, I think the perfect Sonic game would be a mix of both popular 3D Sonic game. I'm glad to see a review for this game when you didn't shit all over it, you actually had a lot of positives. It's just sad that there were so many little letdowns with something that could've been great. All in all, a great review, just like your one on Mania.
Forces from it's first impression is incredibly flawed with Classic Sonic being in the mix, just why Sega and Sonic Team? What's next for Sonic Team after Force's failure? I don't know honestly... It's such a shame that after Generations the games would be panned again and again, aside from Mania, a CLASSIC SONIC GAME!!! Sorry, had to point it out. It's just that... MAN why does Classic Sonic gets all the glory while the modern, which I prefer more, gets the backlash since the Adventure games and Colors and Generation? I don't get it. Unleashed is a great game, and my personal favorite with it's story, gameplay, presentation, and so much more. My suggestion? Well, if the general public is going for the fan developers of Mania instead of the long time owners of Forces, then maybe it's time for Sega to turn the rights over the them, at least in terms of gameplay and story developments. Maybe have Nintendo be the new owner of Sonic, considering Sonic has being more then Mario's rival but now a companion since Smash Bros Brawl. Or I don't know, something in between. As much I have a huge likes of Forces ever since Generations, aka 6 terrible years after it. I'd like to see Sonic and friends go back to their adventure style routes with the exploration, the possibilities of secret paths or treasure, different gameplay verity of Sonic's fast running (let's stop or take a break from the boost, please) Tail's high flying and tech, Knuckle's fighting gliding and treasure hunting to Amy's hammer smashing, Shadow's similarities and Chaos powers, Rouge's flying and spying and hunting, Omega's shooting, Silver's physic powers of throwing or using objects, Blaze's fire, Cream and Cheese duo team up, Vector's strength, Espoo's ninja training, and Charmy's sting (and Big's non existence). Sorry if that was long. Anything can happen, if Sega does something smart and listens to the public here and now.
Great job on making this review Brian, but as for me, I love Sonic Forces and it’s my third favourite game in the series. But in my opinion, I like Forces more than Mania because while Mania is fun to play and replaced Sonic 2 as my favourite classic Sonic game, I grew more attention towards Forces and when I played it and obtained the platinum trophy for this game, I was glad that I managed to play Sonic Forces and made me look forward to more Sonic games in the future since Rise of Lyric threw it all out the goddamn window a few years back. Again, good job and I’m looking forward to your top 10 favourite Sonic games.
I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF SONIC FANS BASHING THE WEREHOG JUST BC ITS DIFFERENT!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! STOP IT!!!! Unleashed was a fun game for me and it’s my fav sonic game so I get triggered (can’t believe I said that) very easily whenever someone just bashes the werehog
Most people don't bash the werehog because it's different. They bash it because they made the levels too long with sorta drawn out battle sections. I like the werehog okay, but I grew tired of it because of the long levels, and repetitive battle sections.
I kinda liked the werehog, but considering I've played other hack & slash games like Devil May Cry, Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the werehog does come off as a bit weak when compared to them. Not because it doesn't show such visceral graphic violence (all those games I previously mentioned are rated "Mature"), but because it's a bit clunky. Sonic's movements at night don't flow well together. Whenever Sonic uses an attack, you have to go through the ENTIRE attack animation before you can use another attack... EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's really aggravating. In pretty much any other hack & slash game, you can cancel pretty much any move right in the middle of performing it. You need to be able to react quickly in these games, and change your movements as enemies continue to use relatively-complex counter-measures against you. Pretty much, Sonic Unleashed's nighttime gameplay mechanics would need a MASSIVE overhaul just to add a dodge feature. I'd honestly much more prefer a standard dodge, or Revengeance's "parry" move over Unleashed's shield. Plus the targetting for when you want Sonic to stretch his arms and grab something is so finicky. It just works when it wants and seems to ignore any kind of rhyme or reason. There have been so many times, even in "2D", where I ended up dying in the game because Sonic just wouldn't target a pole or something in the middle of a jump, even when it was right in front of his face. It's MILES better than Sonic Boom's combat, and isn't half bad for a studio that, to my knowledge, has never made a hack & slash game before, but the four other games I listed earlier handle this sort of gameplay MUCH better. Heck, The werehog gameplay was actually lifted a LOT from the God of War series. I just think taking notes from Revengeance, as well as Devil May Cry 3, would have been much more fitting to put in a Sonic game than God of War, as they're a lot faster, with more attitude and stylish flare.
I actually agree with this review, I'm not saying the game is horrible. Yea there are flaws in the game itself but all in all its not too horrible. I agree it was a flop, at the end of the day, I look at this game and wonder what the hell went wrong with this game and why it received mix reception and honestly, I still can't put my finger on it. Maybe Sonic Team should find new people to take the reins and lead it into a new direction as opposed to using the same style with some changes
Silver/Nick I wish it was. Unfortunately, after the disaster that Shadow the Hedgehog was (even though I liked it), I don’t think Sega will take that route again. Especially with the stupid writers that Sega of America has working for them.
But remember, that was SHADOW. the problem with that game was that they tried to make shadow TOO edgy. I mean, its okay for him to be edgy, but they added guns, vehicles, curse words, and other weapons just to make shadow cool. But in silvers case, they can only focus on him and his psychokinesis. He can have sections where hes flying through the air, attack enemies with psychic powers, have puzzling levels that can make players stop and think and fix things with psychic powers, and he could manipulate time and space with the time stones. This is silvers chance to shine again, lets give him a chance
Awesome review man! Love the ending lol, and I agree with alot of your opinions and insights. In my opinion I'd be ok with Custom character being replaced with Boom!Sonic. Although I do understand the idea of creating a character of your own in a Sonic game would appeal to alot of people. So I'm fine with that. Also Classic Sonic did feel clunky to control at times,, I would zoom pass the levels with ease and excitement with Modern Sonic! :D And then play through a slightly boring level with custom character or classic and die several times because of a shitty jump I don't mean to do. But then again maybe their controls are something to get used to or get the hang of. Cause once I did, then playing through there levels became fun. The game was pretty good for me too, it wasn't AMAZING, or bad it was just above the middle line. So 7/10 would be the right rating. Also your voice seems a little bassy/echoey, maybe fix up your microphone a little. But very good video! :D
Bill Dozer Don’t worry, ‘06 is an objectively bad game to me. I just like it. But if that’s not controversial enough, I also like Shadow the Hedgehog, Heroes is my second favorite Sonic game, and I don’t think Colors is really that great. I actually like Forces more than Colors
JJ Slider I know how you feel. I like 06 and Shadow the Hedgehog and even slightly Sonic 4. I don't like Colors very much, I thought Lost World was an okay game and slightly better than Colors. I like Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 but admit they have not aged that well, but I feel like people are hypocritical when they say such. Like these same people say SM64 hasn't aged the best but don't consider that a negative.
This was a great review man and also the end I also new this game isnt what we were looking for after sonic boom but i feel that the next sonic game will be good this review was one of the more positive ive seen and its nice to see that you enjoyed the game so did I but I know sonic team can do better and I think it might be time to bring in some new recruits to sonic team agian great review man cant wait to see what you put out next
oooooh got me goose-bumpin' towards the end! Pretty nice video, though I dont agree with most of the critique towards forces (i thought it was a really good game). Though I do think it possible or even likely this game consisted of compromises in relation to what it was supposed to be, but even then it turned out pretty good imo.
I have to say, Mania and Forces are two games I would not support in terms of design philosophy for Sonic the Hedgehog; while Mania is a seemingly good game, it being over-saturated with nostalgia is very bothersome to me, and Forces... well you said it, but it's also because of Classic Sonic the Character and I seriously hate him and don't want to see him again; as a style, it's fine, but as a character, I don't want to see him ever again. And I have to agree; I think Sonic should be handled in the west because... the West made Sonic what he is now, and the East don't seem to know who he really is (Generations perfectly captures this problem with their Classic Sonic). However, the game should be a reboot and a re-modernized version of 3D Sonic in full 3D with new stuff; all of this classicism being found in these recent games since Generations personally feels so forced and in-your-face that it bothers the hell out of me... but that's just me.
Kobalt Steel I'm not sure if I do agree with characterization of Sonic in the West as oppose to japan. These two character seem so different. Even Eggman as well.
Kobalt Steel I have to say the Japanese version of the game seemed much more consistent than American one. But i believe that is the translation fault though.
I think is a lazy project, but that works and it's fine. I don't think Sonic team is tired of Sonic, after all, people went and left the franchise and new people will come.
Strange, I said that I liked the air boost and how you can do cool tricks with it, and then people ended up saying that I was defending an exploit in the game. I'm pretty sure it's intentional. Was in the demo, hasn't been patched, and I mentioned nothing about speed running. Ok then Generations fanboys. The game reminds me of SA2 with how they handled the levels. One character visits a location, another visits a different area in said location. If you played SA2, you will know what I mean. Also Sega needs to get new people to work on the modern stuff, either to scrap the whole boost gameplay completely and go for a more adventure feel, or a sequel to Forces with a ton of refinements to what was already established in the boost games. On top of all that, no Classic Sonic. No one plays sonic for the story anyways, but including him still felt unfitting, and that's why he should have stayed in Mania
The game was pure experiment, sonic team spent most the development time on the engine, 2 there was tension in 2015 at sega, 3 sega put a lot of stuff put here as fan service for its sake of fan service, there was a survey given with game and so if team confirmed that no game by them was in development at the is time because they wanted to see feedback, normally games start development during advertising stage if their last game, remain faithful
I think Sega and sonic team could do something like the call of duty games with a diffrent company making a diffrent game. Year 1 can be sonic team with a modern game. Year 2 with Christian whitehead, Simon and pagodawest with a classic. Year 3 a company like sumo digital could make a spinoff. Then it all cycles back so all games have about 2 years atleast of time.
I really agreed with all of this, especially that ending speech. In my opinion, there is more good than bad in this game, but not quite enough good to explicitly be a good game. I’d like to see fans who know what to do take over Sega by unknown circumstances, boot Iizuka, Nakamura and who all else we believe is ruining the series from the inside, and heal sonic themselves.(But keep Ohtani on the team. His music is still godlike.) “Give Sonic to the fans!” - Cobanermani456 This game as a whole though? 6.5/10 as a game - but in the Fun factor it gets an 8/10 - one sorry buttload of trashy fun!
I'm just gonna say it now. Sonic Forces is like the new Sonic Unleashed where after an abysmal game got released, we have a game that general audience likes but reviews are mixed about it.
Nice vid, you raise some interesting questions here. Especially at the end. For me personally Forces is a fun and all around good game. Especially if you are a fan if the boost formula, which I like. It has flaws but let's be honest, most of his 3d games do. Even as far back as adventure which I love. As a package there is much to enjoy here but it seems to be a case of missed opportunities rather than just bad design to me. All in all, I like Forces. Even if it didn't live up to the hype and it's own appointed mission of fully reviving modern Sonic. It seems a step in the right direction. But the only problem is everyone wants us to arrive at the final destination of Modern Sonic goty material. And I don't blame us. As for someone other than Sonic Team handling 3d outings I am less certain. That would likely come with another change in central gameplay formula and I do really like boost. And leaving it behind would likely further split the Sonic fanbase in preferred design. I'd like to see it further refined alongside level design. But if I am honest I am down to try whatever direction we take next. A modern Sonic game of the year. One day.
so...yeah. i'm confused dude. do you like this game, or do you hate it? i haven't played it yet, but i personally don't think a game being easy or short is a bad thing.
The review should speak for itself. All in all, I’m rather neutral on the game itself. If it’s something you’re excited about, I think you’ll enjoy it. What I’m more concerned with, is that the game doesn’t do anything to benefit the series on a larger scale, in fact it feels like a step back. It’s proof that 3D Sonic is stagnating, and that’s a problem.
A sonic game I would like to see is a unleashed sequel, but with only day stages. Keep everyone who worked on the first one because sega would mess it up. The music, graphics, and level designs would be a lot better than this shit
all i have to say is the game is safe safe in that it has nothing that stands out neither in the good or bad parts keep in mind i dont think this game is bad neither good its meh 6/10
Great job on this man! I agree with everything you said here.
My boi!
shadow759 hi
Master Vidxad 58
Agreed 100%.
I agree with 85% of what you’re saying (I enjoy most of the music in this game and the overall game is objectively better than 06 imo) but we’re all on the same side of Sonic Forces being a straight up disappointment.
Amen to this.
Can't agree on the soundtrack but everything else I definitely agree with
I don't know mephiles isn't exactly a great villain either.
Here's how to sum up this game in a sentence: Right when you start to have fun, it ends.
Exactly
Phew! This took thirty minutes to make! I can't believe I survived! (Forget that I said that)
It's been long enough for Sega and Sonic Team to pay attention to what people are saying online about their work... if the next 3D Sonic game isn't great, they are doomed!
If they were listening they would have made Sonic Adventure 3 by now or a game like that, but no they want to do their own thing.
Dominic Greer Um, SA3 is never going to happen also what would it be about tbh
While Infinite was somewhat of a squandered character, his voice actor performed splendidly!
Logan Harrison I'm not sure splendid is the best word, he did do a great job and everything but I don't think he was given enough to work with ykno
"Eggman was never a big threat". I'm sorry, but the classic era, adventure era, Satam, and Archie comics would like a word with you.
I'm so glad you acknowledged the fact that the game was a "massive failure"
Don't forget the load of false advertising BS!
Logan Harrison "massive failure" is a bit too much, more or so a "huge letdown"
the Fals advertising is chaos and shadow who don't even get a boss. Also they said shadow fought for his own reason which was a load of Bullshit
No, Sonic should stay multi platform
Nintendo wouldn't care to invest enough onto Sonic, they have their mascot that they're passionate towards. They won't be as passionate or caring toward a character that was sold to them. (imo)
Ew, don't give Sonic to Nintendo. Give Sonic to Dimps developing team and still get Sega to publish the games.
“The most impressive cutscenes, even beating out the ones in Unleashed” *dislike*
Yea I completely disagree with that statement I thought it was ridiculous!
The opening may be better, but all in all the ones after are quite stale. Compare this with shadows scene from Forces.
Bungus true
Bungus I’m pretty sure Galaxy meant it as a joke, but if not, then I completely agree with you. Heck I agree with you regardless
Thanks for watching, AJ!
Instead of Square Pegs of staff into Circular holes
mechashadow
Exactly.
What's wrong with the boost formula?
arock32497
It's shallow.
It didn't take Sonic Team 4 years for this game. It took them about 1 and a half years. And the new engine the other year and a half.
Totally agree with this
Let Christen Whitehead and the rest of team continue to do retro style classics because they are amazing!
Sorry I didn't know a well thought out argument was gurgling sega's cock and damage controlling
But Chaos was an illusion in this game, and he only appeared 2 cutscenes. How does tying his appearance in this game to the movie makes sense.
One problem, will people be that open to a Sonic game that utilizes the boost gameplay?
We need the designer of the Adventure games, art direction, animation direction, writers, pretty much everything.
Manuel Alberto Romero
Maybe they can allow the player to choose between Adventure style and Modern style gameplay, like the skills shop in Generations allowed the different abilities to be equipped
The end of your videos are always uplifting, I love it
I agree with you mostly. I think the concept of the game is really novel but the execution of the story is pretty piss-poor. Oh well though, at least the character customization is fun!
Nolan McCool
I assume they tried to keep the story a bit light hearted so that many critiques won't call the gsme "too dark for Sonic", but yeah, the story would've been a lot better and deeper.
Great review and conclusion. Pretty much my thoughts down to a T
The reason for classic sonic his awful physics is because (according to the game files) they took sonic lost world and built classic sonic of off that with an automatic run button
Why?
because sonic team is split into two teams team A did unleashed and Gens and Lost World and forces was handled by Team B along with new comers both teams don't really share assets
They made their own engine? Jeez, you could achieve more with the unity engine and put money into actually creating a good game.
MudanTV from what I looked up, the engine was Hedgehog Engine 2. Basically a better version of the one used in Unleashed.... Ut I'll be honest, Unleashed looks miles better..
YASSS BRYAN
Certainly can't agree with the story part, especially when playing levels. You are TOLD things are happening but you never see it, and you never see anyone else in-level doing things. No other soldiers, no other main characters. Just one of the large issues the story had (not to mention the many many plotholes).
The game was developed in 1 year, the Hedgehog Engine 2 took 3 years to develop
FerGamer 1 WOW 😲
I will say this however, forces is a step in the right direction but until the next game there’s a lot of improvements needed for the future
Gaming 56 I don't see how Forces is a step in the right direction. It's a step backwards from Generations in almost every way.
Uh, have you got a cold or something?
I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF SONIC FANS BASHING THE WEREHOG JUST BC ITS DIFFERENT!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! STOP IT!!!! Unleashed was a fun game for me and it’s my fav sonic game so I get triggered (can’t believe I said that) very easily whenever someone just bashes the werehog
Krazy Kevin
Well... Stop it.
Most people don't bash the werehog because it's different. They bash it because they made the levels too long with sorta drawn out battle sections. I like the werehog okay, but I grew tired of it because of the long levels, and repetitive battle sections.
I can see a point he could have just reviewed the game without bashing other games while just saying which is worse or better
mechashadow yeah that’s exactly right
I kinda liked the werehog, but considering I've played other hack & slash games like Devil May Cry, Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the werehog does come off as a bit weak when compared to them.
I'm telling ya, silver the hedgehog is gonna get his own game soon! Now its his turn!
I really love the video Nerdword, you and Johnny are probably the best Sonic fans.
Sonic Team X Platinum Games! Do it!
It seems we share the same idea. I actually think it should be Platinum Games ONLY. Sonic Team needs a break from their namesake.
Nerd Word where have u gone?
What are your opinions on Mania Plus and the future of Sonic ?
PLATINUM SHOULD MAKE A SONIC GAME!!!!!
The game didnt really take 4 years, part of those 4 years were invested exclusively in the new engines development
I feel like I’ve said this a lot of times.... it it’s a meh game that I really like. Like ‘06
JJ Slider Oh no, here come the haters.
Bill Dozer I actually find the Adventure Games the worst main series 3D games
JJ Slider That's fine.
Nice to talk to a chilled Sonic fan for once :)
Best review for this game. I agree with everything you said.
This was a great review man and also the end I also new this game isnt what we were looking for after sonic boom but i feel that the next sonic game will be good this review was one of the more positive ive seen and its nice to see that you enjoyed the game so did I but I know sonic team can do better and I think it might be time to bring in some new recruits to sonic team agian great review man cant wait to see what you put out next
that one there were only three level designer and two of them were new..
So, uh... Top 10 Sonic Games...?
Next video.
Nerdword Entertainment Cool!
oooooh got me goose-bumpin' towards the end! Pretty nice video, though I dont agree with most of the critique towards forces (i thought it was a really good game). Though I do think it possible or even likely this game consisted of compromises in relation to what it was supposed to be, but even then it turned out pretty good imo.
wow this review was so emotional i agree sonic team should stop and let another team handle the series
Kobalt Steel didn't the West made Sonic Boom?
Yeah... Westerners also (mostly) made Sonic 2.
Kobalt Steel I'm not sure if I do agree with characterization of Sonic in the West as oppose to japan. These two character seem so different. Even Eggman as well.
Well that's what 1990's game localizations do; I'm personally more in favor of US Sonic because I find his US personality more appealing.
Kobalt Steel I have to say the Japanese version of the game seemed much more consistent than American one. But i believe that is the translation fault though.
BOI!!! Shadow was playable in Sonic and the Black Knight. So, less than a decade.
Atleast there was one return to form.
I think is a lazy project, but that works and it's fine. I don't think Sonic team is tired of Sonic, after all, people went and left the franchise and new people will come.
They've anounced a sonic forces sequell.
Sonic Horses
19:25 and this is why the sonic cycle will never die.
Thanks for watching.
Does everybody hate the werehog?
You guys do realize that Sega spent 2-3 out of 4 years to work on Hedgehog Engine 2, right?
Dude, like the video, but what is up with your audio? It sounds like your a bit sick.
Me personally, all I want is Sonic Rush 3 on the switch.
Please come back.
Which is better, the werehog or Classic Sonic in Forces
Chilli Hog Werehog
Werehog by far
Ilzuka needs to step down I agree with this big time
my issue with the game is that the stages don't correllate with the cutscenes
The game was pure experiment, sonic team spent most the development time on the engine, 2 there was tension in 2015 at sega, 3 sega put a lot of stuff put here as fan service for its sake of fan service, there was a survey given with game and so if team confirmed that no game by them was in development at the is time because they wanted to see feedback, normally games start development during advertising stage if their last game, remain faithful
12:13! YES. My thoughts exactly
What did Iisuka do? He was not involved! Shun Nakamura made this!
His music is still godlike.)
“Give Sonic to the fans!”
- Cobanermani456
This game as a whole though? 6.5/10 as a game - but in the Fun factor it gets an 8/10 - one sorry buttload of trashy fun!
You sound sick is that just the mic you’re using?
Dude, that's just his voice. Something about surgeries. He's fine.
I swear, I see one of these comments in every one of his videos... Lol.
I'm just gonna say it now. Sonic Forces is like the new Sonic Unleashed where after an abysmal game got released, we have a game that general audience likes but reviews are mixed about it.
The only difference is that Unleashed has polish
Tbh, Team Sonic may not be able to handle their game development deadlines.
Thank God I need some Sensible Sonic Content after that terrible Toro video thinking he knows everything,
mechashadow which one was this?
What a great video keep it up! 👌
12:12 Simple. Tikashi Itzuka stated that Sonic and his friends are world travelers. Sonic Unleashed is Earth, and Sonic Forces is Mobius
That sounds like something he made up on the fly honestly.
True. Both Sonic and Zelda have screwed up timelines.
Sonic, definitely. With Zelda, that's a whole other story.
IMO there are so many plot holes in the Zelda universe. With few exceptions, there was never meant to be a timeline.
Best sonic forces reveiw
Please don't ever use the humans from Unleashed. I refuse to imagine G.U.N. soldiers looking like that ugh.
next:. sonic project x love potion disaster
and I won't be as disappointed as when sonic forces came out
The hedgehog engine 2 (2013)
Concept Arts (2014-2016)
The actual game itself (2017)
They properly spent two ears on the hedgehog engine itself, spent 1 year on concept art and spent a year on the actual game
lennux ND1 damn
What happened to your past videos?
Hey make top 10 sonic stories for the list you should but best sonic game that have great stories
Why do people hate this game
I hope my own criticisms in the video shed at least some light on that.
It’s proof that 3D Sonic is stagnating, and that’s a problem.
i'll see how i feel about it when i get it. this actually gave me my own idea for a sonic game myself.
Yeah. So, what do you think SEGA has planned for Sonic now after Forces?
A sonic game I would like to see is a unleashed sequel, but with only day stages. Keep everyone who worked on the first one because sega would mess it up. The music, graphics, and level designs would be a lot better than this shit
Hey make top 10 2d sonic games like sonic 1 2 3&k advance 1-3 rush trilogy sonic on game gear and don't count mania
Sonic forces I loved the Avatar and level design but I hate how episode shadow is boring
all i have to say is the game is safe safe in that it has nothing that stands out neither in the good or bad parts keep in mind i dont think this game is bad neither good its meh 6/10
Great review! :D
Uhhhh.... this game wasn't made in 4 years, was made in 1 year pal. It's the truth.
Nah sorry but imo modern Sonic has bad controls and the boost formula was just poorly implimented when you compare it to Generations
