As a Michigander, I’m here to tell you the “lakes” the Midwestern neighbor is talking about is the Great Lakes. They are not really lakes, but are inland, freshwater seas. They do get rip currents, and can have storms on them similar to storms on the ocean.
As another Michigander, I can second this comment. Some wicked undercurrents in the Detroit River too!
I wonder if anyone has heard of the Edmond Fitzgerald elsewhere in the US? 😂
@@MsAubrey St. Clair River also has a mean undertow and it seems 2-3 people drown in it every year, even those considered strong swimmers.
@@sallyhamilton7202 oh definitely!
The Edmund Fitzgerald comes to mind..
As a Chicago native👍🏾
As a Midwestern, that is exactly the "snack" cooler we take to the beach.
In kansas we just have small beaches at the lake and the snack cooler is the most important thing!!
Yes...we also have a separate cooler full of alcoholic drinks😄🤣🤣
Yeah , we bought a couple rubber tire wagons for the snacks , and still have to go back to get burgers , fries and poutine from the concession. But we are bit farther north and only get two months beach weather so gotta take advantage
@@outinthesticks1035 all weather is beach weather, it's just a question of how much ice you have to cut through before you can swim. :p ;)
@@Jt.512 had a couple cows fall through the ice once , every time I tried to get a rope on they swam to far side of the hole . I thought " ok , I have a nice warm tractor, I can leave my clothes in there , get in , get ropes on them , drag them out with the tractor , then put nice dry clothes on ".That idea worked pretty good , till my wet feet froze to the tractor steps . Not the method I recommend for callus removal
Midwest Neighbor needs her own channel. Just sayin.
She definitely dose!
Agreed. She's like a fish out of water. Makes a great theme for a series.
AGREED, get her a show stat!
I’m pretty sure she is the director of the channel.
Yes!!!!
I love the neighbor lady, honestly she could have her own sitcom.. (I love the Holderness family too!)
I watched this from my Michigan beachfront hotel where I have a cooler packed with as much stuff as your neighbor 🤣🤣🤣
That's the only way to go lol
A Great Lakes beach is like going to the ocean, but so much better! I'm with your neighbor, no salt and no sharks wins! Greetings from Michigan! 🌅
Exactly!!
hands down.
You can even surf in Michigan!
And probably less crowded.
Just freeze to death
I'm originally from an east coast seaside resort town. My husband is from Nebraska...the "Midwest Neighbor" videos have become my absolute favorite! It sincerely helps me appreciate my in-laws so much more 😆
Thanks for watching! 🙂
Another Nebraskan here, I second that!
Y'all I'm from Southern Arkansas, and am on a whoooooole different wavelength, but I love these too🤣🤣🤣
@@krishoffer8984 my husband grew up in Cozad.
Housewife where in Nebraska is your husband from? I'm from Holdrege Nebraska
So proud that our stupid alligator sighting made it into your skit! Much love from Kalamazoo!
And after 2 weeks they called off the search. I'm sure the winter will take care of it...
Was it a true alligator or a gar fish? Gar fish can look like an alligator.
Just tried to look it up and a news story from TODAY, August 24th, 2022, said a Kalamazoo officer found "another" alligator crawling across street! “These animals take a great deal of care, time, and resources. Should you find yourself not capable of caring for any pet, there are resources available to properly resolve this,” police said. Police also advise exotic pet owners to comply with chapter seven of the city ordinance code, which speaks to ownership of that type of animal.
@@SRose-vp6ew I was wondering about that! I'm like impossible for a gator to survive up here! It's way too cold for them
It’s probably a pet that someone abandoned in the lake. I’m sure that it’s not native to the area, though that could change if they’re allowed to breed.
Kim scoffs, but the Lakes are no joke. They have rip currents and even effect the weather. There's the weather, then the weather "near the Lake".
I never knew they had rip currents too until my neighbor told me. 😳
Yup our house is a ten min walk from lake Michigan and it is always about 10 degrees cooler here than inland
@@SarahAbplanalp And don't forget lake-effect snow.
We were at Lake Michigan this weekend, there was a red flag and the waves were HUGE
@@holdernessfamilylaughs yep! Michigander here. Lake Michigan is by far the best of all the Great Lakes ❤️
My family had a place "Up North" in East Tawas, MI. Lake Huron looks no different than the Tybee Island beach in Georgia...except Lake Huron is clear and blue. And there are no sharks, jellyfish, or greasy salt...and in the winter you can see 5 and 6 foot waves frozen solid in mid air...It is just GORGEOUS!
A sting ray barbed me in the toe at Tybee, apparently. I guess I stepped on it.
I'm from the Midwest and I love the Great Lakes but to be fair big waves of ice is also a scary thought to some people!
Dad had a couple of places out on the point for years. First one was next to the old USCG station (now condos, which ruined it) and the next one was one end of Lake to Bay Road. It's changed a lot over the last few years, especially in the State Park. Thinking about heading up to Perchville this year. Loved seeing the freighters headed to Alabaster. Fun times!
I'm from Michigan and I get quite annoyed during beach trips. Because when people say "do you wanna go to the lake?" it does mean all day. Like pack for the apocalypse.
Yep! Us Michiganders plan the night before because going to the beach is an all day event lol.
Same here...Chicago/lake Michigan. We usually have our grills out there too
We do the same thing in Virginia Beach. Fun people are everywhere!
I'd take a goofy neighbor like her over a fuddy duddy anytime. Great skit gals.
I love the Holderness family but I really want to meet the neighbor she is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!
Like the snacks now if there's bread for the tuna salad...
I remember shocking my new CA friends with the news that seagulls are also at the Great Lakes and that you can't see across the lakes because they are huge.
Before I made it to Florida, Lake Michigan was the first body of water I saw where I couldn't see the opposing shore line. Used to Ozark's lakes.
I'm from Minnesota but seeing Lake Michigan in winter was a new experience, it looked like Antarctica basically.
@@sarahberkner so beautiful!! Especially looking down from a high rise
So Cal native here🙋♀️
I was quite surprised to see Sea Gulls in Minnesota when we moved there! ( I was also COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED after our 1st trip to the "beach". I cringed at letting my kids go in the muddy water)
We literally have tons of seagulls in the middle of the desert here in Las Vegas NV (they’re only here during winter for some reason). They like to hang around parking lots close to fast food areas.
I literally have watched this at least six times and laugh just as hard every time. I was born and raised in the midwest and have lived in California now for over a decade. This video is spot on and hysterical. I especially had to laugh as I had the exact Deans French Onion Dip and Lays Potato Chips that are on the cooler while I was watching this . I guess you can’t take the Midwest out of the girl lol.
I am the Midwestern friend! I can’t tell you how much my best friend, in Florida, loves when I visit and we hit the beach 😂😂😂 she’s casual and I am the one with a loaded wagon walking across the beach- I bring everything but the kitchen sink😂😂😂
Kim's Midwestern neighbor is truly dedicated to her role. She actually sunburned her face for this role. Method acting, at its finest.
sidbebar: someday, Midwestern Neighbor should have her own series on the Holderness channel.
Red headed freckled people should not be at the beach. She is going to pay for that later.
When she tones down the Midwest accent . . . mind blown. 😄 Seriously, though, you two are awesome!
As a Michigander, I this is spot on and hilarious!
Hey fellow Michigander!
She is definitely a bonus to your videos I love how she shows up once a while you guys are awesome together
This was the perfect follow-up to my weekend at Lake Michigan! Your neighbor would already be used to sand if she's familiar with rip currents: Great Lakes beaches (at least the beaches where people go swimming) are sandy. Spot-on about the snacks, though. Our summers are short, so we go all-in when having a beach day.
Love the Midwestern Neighbor videos!
"That's just Kalamazoo for ya" 😅 The Great Lakes are the perfect beaches, no salt, no sharks, no worries. But know how to spot a rip current!!
Also, being at the beach makes you very hungry!
Minnesotan here and this is hilariously on point. I grew up eating cold tuna noodle salad! In the years before before aqua socks, we used our retired slightly-too-small tennis shoes (without socks) as water shoes in the lake at our family cabin. So squishy and slimy! Though to be fair to our ocean-going friends, in August you do need to do a sunfish wiggle to keep all the young sunnies from nipping your moles, freckles, birthmarks, etc. because food gets more scarce as they grow up. They're like freshwater piranhas.
🤣🤣🤣
I guess I did some pretty fancy dance choreography the time a crawdad got up my swimsuit in Minnesota 😆
I was so relieved to leave Minnesota. We just left 😂
@@hannahscott6604 I love it and I miss it all the time but July is the season in Minnesota for big flies and big mosquitos and heat if there's going to be... etc. We don't go there in July anymore!
@@hannahscott6604 Awwww. Sadness. I love it here. But it's not a good fit for everyone.
I live on lake Michigan so yah...u nailed it..and the aloe in the fridge and tuna salad just had me rolling...salt free shark free!!...u know it!...loved this one!..thanks guys!
In the old days, it was Noxema. If someone asks me what Noxema smells like, I can only think “sunburn. It smells like sunburn.” 🤣
@@voiceojane 💯 agree!
@@voiceojane I grew up in Michigan and I still use Noxema on sun burn.
I love your Midwest neighbor videos!
Thanks for watching!
Born and raised near the Gulf but moving to the Midwest very soon. I found y'all's channel because I desperately need some humor and positivity about the situation. You are so much like me at the beach that it's scary! Rash guard, shorts, flip flops, and a camp chair with its own little umbrella, and one bag. Light, simple, and basic. After seven years of constant beach trips, me and my husband have it down to a science. He grew up in the Midwest and misses it so bad, we are moving there later this year. He keeps telling me how great Lake Michigan is, and I'm definitely looking forward to having four actual seasons, cooler weather and the apples, but I'm going to miss being able to jump in the car and be on a beautiful Gulf beach in an hour. When Mardi Gras happens I'm going to be opening a can of Blue Runner and crying into the king cake my mom has promised to send me 😅
Loved this skit! The Great Lakes do indeed have great beaches - the longest freshwater beach in the world is Wasaga Beach, near Barrie, Ontario - 14 km long (not quite 9 miles). It is on Lake Huron, 332 km across (a little more than 200 miles) - and Lake Huron is not the largest Great Lake. The Great Lakes have islands larger than some U.S. states, and hundreds of shipwrecks. I remember learning The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in elementary school music class in Canada 🇨🇦, too!
When we moved from Michigan to the east coast I missed the lakes so much. The ocean just isn't the same.
Hello fellow Michiganders! I love our great lakes. No salt water, incredible sunsets. No sharks (except that one over in Kzoo) Have they caught him yet, by the way? I'm sure he probably just came up from Florida on vacation to enjoy our salt-free sunset lakes! Have a great day everyone, don't cha know.
It's just like the song, if the baby is out there, so's the whole family. 🦈
I'm from northern Indiana, about 60 miles from Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes do have rip currents, and create their own weather patterns, which is where lake effect snow comes from.
I know it! Originally from South Bend, and I spent many weekend days at Tower Hill (Warren Dunes) and New Buffalo, and some at Michigan City as well!
Being from Wisconsin I can honestly say I do love a cold tuna noodle salad. The first time I went to Panama City Beach, Florida I got sunburned so bad that I ended up with sun poisoning and spent 3 days in the hospital. I can totally relate to this video. 🤣💗
I thought that people in the South were the only ones to use the expression "sun poisoning". I have heard it my whole life, but didn't know it was a term to be found on WebMD.
Minnesota here. Same!
I live in Minnesota but lived in Michigan for a few years, highly recommend visiting the sand dunes/beaches along Lake Michigan, the view is so beautiful and peaceful and isn't as crowded and I miss it! Minnesota lakes are nice but the beaches are small.
She is right about KZOO!!🤣🤣 I miss the ocean but the Great Lakes are amazing and yes the rip currents are real. This is hilarious and I love it! I want to know when you recorded my conversation with my family and friends, this is spot on 😂😂😂😂😂😂
These are my favorite, (with her Midwest neighbor). I can totally relate to her. 🤣💞
I totally relate to her and I'm not even from the midwest
Just love the videos with your hilarious neighbour!!! Hugs and much love from the Netherlands! Sceptical about that tuna salad too.......
Sending hugs back to you!
Loved the Netherlands when I was there! Even though it wasn't for very long. It was during the tulip festival.
@@MsAubrey Beautiful time of the year!
@@MsAubrey Michigan has a tulip festival too.
@@javdestiny I’m aware
So, I guess I'm not the only person to go look up what a Shibumi shade was...
If you go to a NC beach it's pretty much the only thing you see up and down the coast.
Me too!
You two make a great team.
I feel like a true Michigander such as myself would feel right at home at a beach with lots of sand. And yes, the Great Lakes have rip currents too! But the ocean’s marine life…yeah…well….I might get a little nervous too. You’ve got me there 😁
I always love when your “neighbor” is on…the best!
The alligator was in Albion (about an hour east) and it was actually a turtle 😂(it was in the Kalamazoo river though)
“That’s just Kalamazoo for ya” truth lol!
My midwest family would already have a charcoal grill set up. Then we’d get yelled at and I’d have to relocate the whole operation to the parking lot to grill. My kids will still beg to eat $6 hotdogs at the concession stand.
I feel like everyone can relate to this because you meet a lot of different types of people whenever you go to the beach; occasionally, you'll find people from the midwest there too and I imagine that this conversation would come up at some point...
Your videos always brighten my day and make me and my family laugh. And the neighbor 😂 so funny thank you for what you do💗
Glad we make you laugh!
Spot on! As a fellow Michigander, I totally can relate. 🤣
I want to be as prepared as the neighbor lady.
“This is only the morning cooler”
😂😂😂
Hahanhaahha Nova Scotian here! My province is practically an island. Wherever you are, its less than 30 min to the sea. I remember going out on my uncles fishing boat one summer. His entire line was nothing but dogfish! We counted them, 99 dogfish . He was so pissed! Totally ruined that days catch.
Whoever's reading this, i pray that whatever you're going through gets better and whatever you're struggling with or worrying about is going to be fine and that everyone has a fantastic day! Amen
Big props for the Tommy Boy reference!
I'm dying. You ladies are hysterical!
Ludington Michigan has a slogan all over saying "No Salt, No sharks, No worries" I'm all for that!
Having lived in many parts of Michigan, and now on a lake, I can confirm: it is just a Kalamazoo thing.
Love the Midwest neighbor always!!! Thank you for that
I relate to all the snacks😂 How can you do a beach day without salty sandy chips?! 😋
You can't!!
As someone who was born in and grew up in Illinois and Iowa , and who lived in California and who is now living in Florida for many years now, I can appreciate both sides. Hilarious!
I loved the Tommy Boy reference! “Not here, or not here, but right about here”. 😆
I am a Yooper, from the Upper Peninsula of MI. Near Lake Superior. Largest freshwater lake in the world. Very cold. The song the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a song about a shipwreck on the lake. Also, people who try to do a Midwest or Yooper accent often butcher it. I was approached and mistaken twice on two separate occasions on a vacation NYC for sounding like Marge from the movie Fargo. (2003). I definitely did not sound like her, but my accent is pretty thick. I told my family that if anyone else approached me and said that I was going to make a joke….and say….Yeah, eh! I was her voice coach for the movie! NOT! Hollywood often overdoes it. I was told by my high school speech and drama teacher that I probably wouldn’t make in an industry that would deal with me speaking, because my accent is too thick.
Tuna salad, ribbon jello, base tan…very accurate.
I love these ones! And honestly as a Minnesota girl lakes seem much safer than the beach. I make my kids wear life vests in the ocean!
I live on a lake in Michigan - she is not wrong. Our "rip currents" are from the wakeboard boats when they fill their ballasts all the way ;) - gotta love Michigan lakes in the summer!
I LOVE the ones with your neighbor!!
Loved this! Needed it this morning! And ... it helps that the neighbor is with you today, because that means I can go to the beach in peace ... ;) You gals are delightful!!!!!
Original midwesterner here, grew up in Indiana, so Michigan and a couple other lakes were the norm growing. It was great. No salt water, no sharks, sometimes an occasional fish would swim by you. Jet ski's are better on the lake, no splash back salt water in your face. The cooler thing is true, always full of snacks and alcohol, you have extra lotion, towels, umbrellas...of course I've been to the ocean countless times and enjoy it (for the most part), it's just not as much my thing as a lake. Lake Michigan is like an ocean without it actually being an ocean and there are riptides there so you have to be careful and plan your timing right, because the water is freezing until a certain point
You guys bring SO MUCH JOY to our family!! I love this!!! (So what happens when you love BOTH the ocean AND the great lakes?! Lol!) Thanks for the laughs, Guys!! ❤️
Greetings from Michigan! Loved this skit...it is spot on. I laughed and laughed!
Yeah, I don't do beaches. The sand is way too hot and literally everywhere. Lakes are great. And it's easy to avoid the slimy bottoms. Just find a dock next to a deep area and you never have to touch it!
As a Floridian…this is 100% accurate.
I hate the beach and I don’t know why I live here.
As an Iowan, let’s trade places! I miss the beach lol
Having lived in Michigan for 20 years followed by 20 years on the gulf coast of Florida....... Lets face it - this is some funny stuff right here. Hard to forget my first time swimming behind some jetties and running into a dogfish. My northern brain was not ready for that moment. Years later i had a friend snorkling for the first time and he had the same reaction. Me? "Naw, it's fine. He's more scared of you than you are of him."
Your neighbor is The BEST!!
She cracks me up every time!! 😆
That's great! I was raised just south of Kalamazoo! 🤣 Again, totally accurate! 😂
Apparently I'm Midwestern and didn't even know it!!
YEAH!!! Detroit Tigers towel!
Love from Michigan!
Love 💕 Midwest buddies!!!
I used to live in the midwest, now in the mid-south....I vote for the pool! 😀
Gotta agree about the lake thing, favorite beach is on Lake Michigan. The salt on the ocean beaches really annoys me

That's just Kalamazoo for ya. Gators everywhere.
Only missing aspect from the lake beaches are the beautiful assortment of rocks. Rocks everywhere.
We went to the UP last week and came back with a ton from Lake Superior. Not sure what we’ll do with them though 😁
Another wonderful encounter with the midwest neighbor! I love these episodes.

I LOVE your Midwest neighbor! ❤️❤️❤️
Chicagoan who vacations in Michigan and Wisconsin… Lake girl all the way! Great Lakes and inland lakes are where it’s at! Plus there’s a saying “lake Michigan… Unsalted, no sharks.“ Can’t get any better than that! And you can’t see to the other side so it might as well just be the ocean 😎
Northern Wisconsin lake girl here!! Yep, you betcha. That Midwest neighbor is SPAHT AHN about everything! Love this 🤣🧀💚💛💚💛
Totally agree on the lakes being slimey. Worst part of camping at a lake is the smell and the green/brown slime
I think it depends on the lakes you are going to. I live in upstate NY...I've never been in a slimy lake. Lol!
@@sallygreenfield6991 I agree, it must depend on the location. I'm landlocked in the Rocky Mountains, unfortunately.
“It’s like a contour” lol

From Illinois and the midwesterner is on point! So good!
I live for you Midwest neighbor videos
I’ve noticed that folks keep saying that the neighbor’s accent isn’t a Michigan accent….. yes and no. You hear it some around the Bay City area and up around the Traverse City area heading north towards Mackinac south of the bridge and The Soo north of the bridge. My aunts and cousins have that accent.😂😂😂😂 My family is from Michigan and I lived there for a minute when I was in college. I never had the accent…. Mine was always a muttled mix of Midwest, west coast, and southern for flavor.
I think we need an episode where the Midwestern neighbour takes Kim to the lake.
This is so funny!! Kim and her friend are so funny!! This makes me smile!!
