  • This chant version of Psalm 88 was recorded during our 2019-2020 Theopolis Fellows Program.
    From Peter Leithart:
    "I've often read Psalm 88 during pastoral visits with people who are grieving, lost, confused, desperate.
    This Psalm seems to add insult to injury, ending with the stark lines, "You have removed lover and friend far from me. Darkness is my only friend." That's comfort?
    Yes! The Psalms are the songs of Jesus, His own words of lament and triumph for and with His people. Entering our God-forsakenness, Jesus says, "Darkness is my only friend." No matter how dark it is for us, it was darker for Jesus. No matter how far we fall, Jesus has been lower. We are not, cannot be, alone in the void.
    Here's a reason to learn the Psalms: God knew we will slide into the darkness, but He gives us words, the words of His Son, to pray from the pit. "

    Immensely heavy! Thank our god He is that merciful to stop and hear our earthly temporary problems that can devastate beyond worlds and generations.

    O Lord God of my salvation,
    I cry out day and night before you.
    Let my prayer come before you;
    Incline your ear to my cry!
    For my soul is full of troubles,
    And my life draws near to sheol.
    I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength
    Like one set loose among the dead,
    Like the slain that lie in the grave,
    Like those whom you remember no more,
    For they are cut off from your hand.
    You have put me in the depths of the pit,
    In the regions dark and deep.
    Your wrath lies heavy uon me,
    And you overwhelm me with all your waves Selah
    You have caused my companions to shun me
    You have made me a horror to them.
    I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
    My eyes grow dim through sorrow.
    Everyday I call on you O Lord;
    I spread my hands to you.
    Do you work wonders for the dead?
    Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
    Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    Or your faithfulness in destruction?
    Are your wonders known in the darkness,
    Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
    But I, O Lord, cry to you;
    In the morning my prayer comes before you.
    O Lord, why do you cast my soul away?
    Why do you hide your face from me?
    Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
    Your wrath lies heavy upon me;
    Your dreadful assaults destroy me.
    They surround me like a flood all day long;
    They close in on me together.
    You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    Darkness is my only companion.

    Have you tried adding a drone setting in there? One bass or baritone voice to set an undertone. Then the three par harmony you had going. That would add so much depth to this chant.

    Does sing mean chant? In the "A Psalter for Prayer" says "sing" does it mean "chant"?

    This is wonderful, and very helpful for learning to chant. Please make more chant videos like this. I would love to see and hear all of the Psalms done as well as other biblical hymns and doxologies. A true blessing to the church!
