  • Thirty-five years ago, two charter boat captains on their way back from Catalina Island off the California coast came across a capsized boat and an orange life vest bobbing in the waves. One of the men jumped in and pulled out a 9-year-old - the only survivor. Steve Hartman has the story.

I can't imagine a 9-year-old girl being stranded in the ocean for 20 hours.
Talk about being tough! - She deserves all the best in life.

If I remember correctly, on the actual pod cast the had both tried to find each other over the years. The 2 boatsmen had very little to go on and the same was with Desiree. It wasn't until a friend of hers was connected with the 2 men that saved her and he hadn't really put 2 and 2 together. If you watch the actual pod cast she'll explain it.

When she said “I’m Desiree”, you see first hand how traumatized they all were by that event. The gasp from one of the men tells their story. And yes, I am also bawling like a baby.

I, along with my friend Johnny, since 1959 both know the feeling the fishermen have. We rescued a lady in Eastern Tampa Bay, Fl. who was on her raft and caught in a rip tide, pulling her our into the gulf. She was fighting to get in t land, but was too tired and weak to do it. We pulled our boat up next to her, I reached over the side and grabbed her, pulling her into the boat. She just dropped to the deck, exhausted, but alive. We too never saw her after that day. We took her back to where she had parked her car and helped her onto shore and to her car. It was a great feeling to know e had just saved a life and she would remember that day. We went on about our way, going fishing that day. It was so well worth it. saving a life.

I’ve done tons of open water swimming in all kind of water temps, from 50-degree water to high 80’s. To survive in 60-degree temperature water for 20 hours, even if you have a wetsuit, it’s just a miracle. Glad she was able to reconnect to her rescuers.

Yep. I know that area.. the water is cool there. There's a deep channel between Catalina and the Laguna shore. A cold current runs through it. Also.. that area is absolutely notorious for great whites. They feast on all the sea lions that live on a small island right off Catalina island. There are so many white sharks there that most divers won't dive that area.

This story still gets to me. Heroes don't need super powers, or any kind of gimmick. These two fisherman... FISHERMAN, proved heroes come from all walks of everyday life.
