      @@ShefsofProblemSolving I don't know the exact term for those type of questions which actually belongs to Number Theory but concepts of algebra are also used ( question with mixed topics )
      Example question : Suppose that a, b, c are distinct integers and that p(x) is a polynomial
      with integer coefficients. Show that it is not possible to have p(a) = b,
      p(b) = c, p(c) = a.
      (It is a question of Number Theory but also has use of polynomials which is part of algebra)

    Thank you so much, I'm more on Algebra and I can only solve basic problems in geometry that I learned in school but I want to learn more about Geometry to solve harder than before : )

    Actually I'm preparing for the iranian geometry olympiad which is next week
    But I'm struggling a little bit and starting to lose confidence in myself because I can't solve other than problem 1 and rarely p2
    Any advices to make a comeback?

    I'm just starting out with olympiad mathematics and often, I don't understand a lot of problems and feel very worthless and dejected. How do I deal with this?

      My main advice is not to treat a problem as a goal that you have to achieve but as a play ground for you to play around and explore. Because almost no one, even the top of the top knows how to solve these problems immediately. Especially as a beginner, you need to try to have a "feel" for the problem and gain intuition on what the problem is discussing. The process of learning actually comes after you've sufficiently gather the relevant ideas and concepts. Contemplate and reflect, that's my advice, even if you're stuck on a problem for days, keep on doing it, the knowledge that you gain from solving that problem is more valuable than tricks and algorithms.

      Hi there. If you're just starting out it's to be expected that you don't understand a lot of the problems, especially the ones from the IMO.
      So the first step is understand that this is normal.
      Next, solve try solving easier problems. Solving easier problems can help build up your confidence in attempting the harder problems. Don't feel bad that you're "behind" because you're solving problems from say a lower grade than yours because that's where you'll build a foundation for harder problems.
      Finally, math isn't everything and there are other things in life that are important. For some it's family, health, friends, music, arts, social sciences, communication, religion, community, and who knows what else. Being aware that you're a human being with other facets of life other than mathematics can help with the feelings of worthlessness. I could go on and ask you "worthless to whom?" because it's a value judgement at the end of the day and individuals are worthless to some people but valuable to others.
      I can make a video and go into more detail if you think that could be helpful to you or maybe others :)

      Thanks a lot for the advice. I like playing around with problems but sometimes, it gets a bit frustrating after a point of time. I guess, I'll have to work on that. Also, I make notes after seeing a solution as to how I could have come up with that myself and figuring out the intuition behind the proof. About the playground thing, I think that mindset does help me feel better. A video would be beneficial. Thanks a lot again.

      @@cosmicmicrowavebackground547 On the frustration, that's why it's generally a good rule of thumb to leave a problem (especially if the "easier" IMO problems seem out of reach) after 30 - 45 minutes of no progress and try them out for at most 90 minutes. Because sometimes you just come across a problem that is just... weird to you...

    I wonder how a good graph is the most important part of a geometry problem but no video and no mathematician shows their drawing. They all teach geometry problems using Geogebra and software and no one shows the entire paper process from scratch using a compass, a pen and a ruler. That is strange.

    Hi, thanks a lot for your video, it’s really helpful to me that I’m a beginner in math Olympiad, in starting training since this year, in a couple of months I’m gonna be a 10th grader, am I too late to start?

      Great to hear you like the video! Really depends on what country you're from and what your goals are. If your goal is to develop your thinking skills, I don't think it's too late for that at any point. If you like mathematics and are considering doing some quantitative university degree, there is upside in learning how to take quantitative tests under pressure and the problem solving skills math competitions develop.
      If your goal is to get to the IMO, there is a lot of variance depending on where you are from. Say you're not from a country that is consistently in the top 40 at the IMO www.imo-official.org/results.aspx , then the chances of you passing to the IMO are HUGE. Though depending on where you are from you might be able to pass to other competitions as well.
      If one potential life goal is to get into a top USA university on full financial need based aid, doing math competitions can be a way to get you into them even if you're from a country or place where there aren't a lot of opportunities available.
      Overall I'd try to get some clarity about what you hope to get out of competitive mathematics. I wanted to win the first gold medal at the IMO for my country (I failed in that goal) and that gave me a lot of motivation. Only later did I realize what a huge asset going to the IMO was in applying to colleges in the USA. I also wish I was more comfortable being seen as a person who was "into competitive math".

      @@ShefsofProblemSolving I am very grateful for your answer; yes, my goal is to get to the IMO and win a gold medal, that is also my motivation, I am from Peru, here students usually start olympics when they are in 7th or 8th grade, so I thought I was too late. Thanks for your videos, they help me a lot, it would be great if you could make one about olympiad frequently asked questions :)

    good video, but I still have a question, what did you mean when you talked about the Russian Geometric Olympiad? I live in Russia and I participate in our olympiads, but I have never heard of such an olympiad, I have only heard of verbal geometry and Sharygin olimpiad

    What about the Putnam? Is the material gonna be the same as the Olympiad?

      I've never done a Putnam competition, so I'm not the most credible individual to ask. However, looking over some exams there are things from Combinatorics and Number theory from IMO competitions that help you prepare but I don't think geometry is too useful at that level.

      @@ShefsofProblemSolving thanks for the response, I just looked at a few putnam papers and there doesn't seem to be a lot of geometry problem. Even if they're present, most of them are pretty doable even without some of the IMO tricks.

      EGMO by Evan Chen is great for beginners, took me from nothing to quite solid at geometry. BTW how many years do you have left for IMO

      @@mathlegendno12 This is probably the last year. But IDC if I qualify the exam I just want to learn how to solve the problems, I find them quite intriguing. So, idc how many years I have to dedicate to learn to solve them

      @@rudeus2549 Oh wow ahaha that's a good view on all this olympiad math. Other textbooks like for NT is MONT and combi is PSS by Arthur engel, and algebra I'd just learnt the individual topics using individual books. All these are elementary and what I use as a beginner!
