The A321 seems to have taken the 757's market. Many carriers like Delta and Iceland Air are replacing their 757s with A321s.
American Airlines retired its 757s and mostly flies A319s A321s and 737-800s for medium haul routes.
It is often said that the 757 was overengineered and that Boeing made it too capable to be able to produce it economically.
Simply put, it was the perfect airplane, and it's hard to improve upon perfection.
Just slap on more efficient engines and done
The 757 underlying systems are still more modern than the 737-MAX. That is still back in the 1960s.
The 707, 720, 727, 737 and 757 all have exactly the same fuselage, designed in the 1950s.

It is closer to A320NEO than 737MAX which is essentially NOT FLY-BY-WIRE.
I think one thing often overlooked was how customers of older 737s at the time wanted boeing to stick to the 737 because it will be cheaper for them. Boeing at one point I believe was actually considering moving on from the 737 entirely, focusing on the 757 rather than developing the 737 NG.
Reasonable person: the 737 has nearly all 757 capabilities and is much cheaper to operate.
757 fanboy: the 757 was the best and always be the best, bring it back on the airlines and passenger dime so I can spot then taking off and landing.

Simple answer…. Boeing screwed up and hasn’t fixed their colossal mistake of not updating their best most adaptable design.
Even when I'm in my grave, I'll still wait for 757 MAX/Plus

Simple, if the 757 was still around Boeing couldn't sell the 737 long range variants. The 757 is far superior to the 737's.
The 757 was built to replace the 727

Short sighted ceos scrapped the tooling since they didnt think the 737 would ever exceed its adaptability constraints, really sad since its much more modern than the 737
BOE downhill started with the closure of 757 assembly line.

yes they should have updated the ferrari of the skies and they are regretting it. They cannot do anything now because the A321 LR and XLR have huge orders
Boeing had more important things to do back in the early 2000's then keep building great aircraft, like moving their offices to Chicago for some reason. 🙄 Guess they should have stuck to engineering and building the best aircraft in the world.
The A321 XLR is not the best replacement, but sure will take Boeing's lunch in this market.
The A321 XLR is better than the 757 in every way.
Because Boeing management thinks the 737 is the second coming. They have ceded the market to airbus with the A321.

Absolutely they should have updated it ! And I hope they would consider restarting the line or come out with something like it. What do you mean current engineers wouldn't know what to do with it ? It's a commercial jet aircraft isn't it ? SMH

BOEING B757 SERIES is HIGHER COST on AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE and LONG TIME for GROUND SERVICING HANDLERS.
Because the McDonald Douglas management who somehow took over Boeing management during the merger successfully tanked the best plane manufacturer in the world.
If the MCD management was in charge, should be 100s of MD95's and MD90's flying off the production lines. They could put Airbus our of business

Boeing should bring back 757 with the updates in 787/777.Then only they can compete with 320/321 specs . Because 737 is now more outdated aircraft when compares to 320..

You are correct for some operators they are being finished by A330neo look at DL which is using the A339 to end their B767s
