  • How to build and set a mooring buoy for 18' boat in the ocean. Make sure to ask the locals in your area what they use! This is a guide for those who have done their research into a mooring system that will work for them. This information is general nature and cannot substitute for the advice of a licensed professional, i.e., by a competent authority with specialised knowledge who can apply it to the particular circumstances of your case.

Thanks for the positive comment SpearHunter2. I was quite impressed how the buoy handled a storm this last September. I took the boat out of the water soon after that as winter storms in this area of the world are just too powerful. Some people drag their buoys and anchors out of the water also. Doing so obviously will make your gear last longer not only from salt water corrosion but erosion from the chain dragging on the bottom.

The problem with galvanized hardware is that friction will rapidly wear the coating off.
I learned that, the hard way, after making something similar, and losing 1,600lbs of concrete.
I filled an 11 cubic foot mortar mixing pan with concrete, embedding a new, galvanized boat anchor into the concrete, leaving only the top of the shank protruding.
Lasted a little more than a year, in salt water, with a 50ft houseboat tied to it, but my next attempt will use only stainless hardware.
Luckily, I always set a 90lb fluke anchor, with 300lbs of chain, and 75ft lf rope as well, in a small bay that’s only 5ft deep, and check on the boat weekly.

Another note; If you do not remove your set up every winter remember to inspect your gear for wear and sea life/plant growth. Keep the chain and float clean as this growth will add weight to your gear which will result in decreased buoyancy 8)

Jeep, just the buoy on the end of the chain floated, then I tied it onto the back of the boat and dragged the weight/anchor to the depth I wanted it at.

Great video. How much would that mooring anchor weigh?

I have since sold the boat and do not have any info on its weight. What I can tell you is that the boat was 18', bow rider design with a V6 4.3 Mercruiser with fresh water cooling. the build of the boat was neither light or super heavy.

Any idea of the weight and how dopiest you get the mooring to the drop zone?

How many bags of concrete did you use to make that? (Trying to get an idea of the weight.)

Hi Max, great video, followed your design yesterday and everything seems to have turned out well. Had the whole neighborhood over for a look:)
How much does your boat weigh BTW?

You know Micheal I cant remember but the boat build was not light as it was an inboard outboard with a fairly large fuel tank and fresh water plumbing.

please read note as there is no liability suggested nor implied! ask your neighbors what they use!

You should of just welded the rebar into your tire rather than use wire . Because by welding the rebar in your tire it wood be stronger

Doesn't, he dragged it at the bottom of seabed with the boat

I've seen those kind of birds before! They're web-footed boobies.
