Story 2: for anyone who wants to look up more about the "timing belt can destroy the engine" bit, the term for that is *interference engine.* The Ford Escort (USA) was specifically designed as non-interference since it targeted lower income buyers who were likely to not do proper maintenance. The Ford Ranger pickup was similarly built to withstand poor maintenance and conditions.
I trust my mechanic to never rip me off or overcharge me to the point that he has authorization to do whatever repairs he thinks are necessary. Recently the alternator died, so he replaced it, and when he went to test drive it saw the brakepads were worn down a bit too much for comfort and needed replacement. Why do I trust him? He's my mother's second brother's oldest son, and I took care of him and his brother over the summers when they were too young to hang out home alone.
I also have 2 independent shops and an Audi dealership that I trust that way. They aren't the cheapest, but the mechanics actually know their stuff, and they give me the full itemized bill, showing me exactly why that repair ended up costing $500, as well as all the old parts. I fix what I can, and give them the big stuff that I don't have the tools or time for. By now, I just tell them to do whatever needs to be done, and two days later, I got a shiny new wheel bearing, plus a noisy old one sitting in the trunk. It's kind of a win-win situation, as they are glad I don't clog up their shop with broken light bulbs or oil changes and always pay on time, and I am glad that I can just pay them to change a super stuck rust belt CV shaft or cracked 160lbs truck DPF.
Brakes Story: That 1st Shop was Stupidly Ballsy because by starting the work WITHOUT OP'S SIGNED AUTHORIZATION, they can NOT force OP to pay for the work...meaning if they finish the work, OP doesn't have to pay a penny for his brand new brakes...
I definitely get that there are bad mechanics like the one in story 3 (aside from the great OP went later). But in story 4 there are those who actually put in effort. It was her own fault that she didn't listen after OP and others mentioned it will be a problem enough times.

I am sorry, the first story annoying me too much. This sounds like the rantings of a spoiled toddler than an adult. He spent over a week to "stick it to the man". Yeah sure, the first time he signed it was sort of funny, but the fact that he kept insisting that he be able to use that infuriated me more and more. I couldn't even enjoy the puns at the end this story upset me so much. And the fact that his boss sided with him would mean that is a company I would want nothing to do with.
I thought I was the only one. The whole time listening I kept thinking why are you such a dick. They were just doing their job and you went out of your way to be a dick just because you were bored.
With the last one. Even with interference engines. It is cheap enough to try a new belt after it breaks. If it works you saved 2-7 thousand. If not, you needed a motor anyway.

The customer with the home warranty must not have paid attention when he signed up. The homeowner always has to pay a service call fee, and it's around $75-$100 for most major home warranty companies.
Thing is, you can get screwed over by a mechanic. Plenty of bad shops exist worldwide. But you'd have to be blind not to see that a frayed belt does not belong in a car even if you're as un-technical as a driver can get.Only a raging Karen/Kevin would bork that simple reality up that badly.

It's really hard to condiment on this story. It was insulting that the bank manager called OP honey. The bank thought OP couldn't cut the mustard, but she was salty, so the saucy boss, a seasoned veteran of buttering them up, peppered the bank with threats, put them in a pickle and gave the bank a chance to ketchup with the spread out paperwork. The boss was encurryaging her. They were in a real jam. They had to chili out. As surely as the sun rises in the yeast, he wasn't going to let some dip get away with this. So the bank manager made thyme for her. Wholly guacamole. It is a story to relish. It was head on a-salt. Thanks for a-dressing this. I'd say this was covered from my head tomatoes, because puns are your bread and butter.

While a bank can knock you back on your signature, mostly because it comes down to them needing something that is government official in order to compare to. The DMV, being a government establishment, is NOT allowed to dictate what signature you put on your official government documents, because doing so breaches your Constitutional Rights. I also wonder what banks would do regarding Japanese signatures, they dont actually sign, they commonly use hanko, which is a carved stamp which is used by an individual, or an individual on behalf of a firm, that would be used for said signature or initials. Anyone that visits Japan can also get these made for them and you can get them made as a gift for anyone as well. However they arent used much outside of East Asia and the Japanese government is phasing them out. However there isnt much stopping people in western society from using such along with their own signature and one way of stopping anyone from trying to copy your signature to say you signed something when you didnt. PS: Something else also that OP now has to consider, he needs to also update other places which have his signature on file.

Story2: Nothing ticks me off more than someone trying to take advantage of someone. I once owed the city I lived in $2.00 in city taxes. I paid by check knowing it would cost them more to process it than what I was paying. It's even worse when you're travelling and don't really have a choice in the matter. Timing belt story: She was angling for free repairs, whether she understood how badly her car needed the repairs or not.
As a mechanic facing this situation in the past YOU ARE JUST SCREWED. In this situation if they're not going to listen there is nothing you can do. I have circumvented my bosses helping someone go elsewhere after hours connecting with them after everybody left dealership just to keep them from driving it. They became a forever client at dealership even though we cost more than the place they took it.
Story 1: I think it's crazy that the bank even cared. My signature basically looks like a scribble where you can make out my first and last initials but nothing else and I've used it for my business, my license, my mortgage, etc. All that matters is that they have something to compare to if there's ever reason to question the validity of something (a credit card purchase, for instance). I also have autographed sports memorabilia and the autographs are definitely not the person just writing out their first and last name in cursive.
Really they cant dictate what you put as your signature, however what you sign on the bank documents can come back and bite you if it doesnt match any government related documents such as a driver license, or passport. Its those they ask for in order to get a match should they need to. However, such documents with such signatures tend to sit in a dusty filing cabinet, or in this day and age, scanned into the system and held there with teh original then getting destroyed. No government department, especially within the US, can dictate what you sign on something, why, because it falls under your Freedom of Speech rights, and therefore a Constitutional issue if should a government department then dictate what your signature should look like. As I said in my post, love to see what they would do with a Hanko lol
Home warranty story: My utility companies charge a finance charge (usually with $1.50 or so minimum) for an unpaid balance. That would be monthly, though.
Story 1: I will go against the few comments here and said OP was in the right. I think that the biggest question I have is why somebody allowed this to be OK. Like legally OP or somebody else can do it.
The timing and delivery on the puns was rather MECHANICAL and were WRENCHED into trying to BELT the comments to MESH with the TEETH of the story attempting to PULLEY the TENSION into the FABRIC of the story

They can’t say anything about your signature. I recently had SSD return some paperwork citing my signature and sayin I had to use my full name as my sig. I called them and said “I don’t care who you are, I don’t commit felonies and I won’t commit one just because someone doesn’t like somethin and thinks it has to be their way.” They dropped it immediately and sent me what they owed me. Oh and the DMV tried the same thing one year I got my license. It didn’t work out in her favor either.

Mechanic here, to confirm on story 3 a shop can't take possession of your vehicle even if it is unsafe to drive and the liability for damages on the vehicle actually bias heavily against the owner getting serviced (so if the vehicle injured someone in the garage, even if the owner wasn't the driver and an employee was, the owner is liable for the damages). If the vehicle is truly unsafe, law enforcement can give a penalty fine or ticket to the owner for taking it onto public roads but an impounding isn't the first action, and several states (like Florida) have active laws saying that if the vehicle drove into your shop, it has to drive out of the shop regardless of how unsafe or damage it is if the client has no outstanding service fees/debt to the shop. So a shop has no standing to hold a vehicle from a customer unless there's actual outstanding fees. Though MANY mechanics who aren't managers or legal professionals are taught that they have to hold unsafe vehicles by law even though it's a hoax. Tldr no state allows holding a vehicle from a customer based on safety, and several have active laws going directly contrary to some extremes. But it's an urban legend many mechanics are taught by managers and is used to shake down customers

Mechanic here, to confirm on story 3 a shop can't take possession of your vehicle even if it is unsafe to drive and the liability for damages on the vehicle actually bias heavily against the owner getting serviced (so if the vehicle injured someone in the garage, even if the owner wasn't the driver and an employee was, the owner is liable for the damages). If the vehicle is truly unsafe, law enforcement can give a penalty fine or ticket to the owner for taking it onto public roads but an impounding isn't the first action, and several states (like Florida) have active laws saying that if the vehicle drove into your shop, it has to drive out of the shop regardless of how unsafe or damage it is if the client has no outstanding service fees/debt to the shop. So a shop has no standing to hold a vehicle from a customer unless there's actual outstanding fees. Though MANY mechanics who aren't managers or legal professionals are taught that they have to hold unsafe vehicles by law even though it's a hoax.
Tldr no state allows holding a vehicle from a customer based on safety, and several have active laws going directly contrary to some extremes. But it's an urban legend many mechanics are taught by managers and is used to shake down customers

I don’t know about the legality of something like that. It might be a smart move on the shops part though. It may simplify any legal process if an accident happened due to customer negligence. It also could show proof th. at the customer was informed of unsafe conditions and reduce “perceived” liability on the Shop’s part.
