This video shows the process for how to install a SoundTraxx Tsunami 2 TSU-KN1 DCC decoder into a N Scale Kato EMD P42DC Genesis locomotive. The P42 is mostly indistinguishable from the P40, and this decoder is made to work with F Units as well as the F40-PH live of locomotives from Kato.
Along the way, we make the ditch lights separately controllable, and program them to flash alternately when the horn is sounded, just like the prototypes do.
This is the first part of my long distance Amtrak train build, in honor of Amtrak's 50th anniversary. In the next episode, we'll add separately controllable marker lights as well as ditch lights to my other Kato N Scale P42DC.
The series will most likely conclude with the customization of the train set itself, adding interior lights to the coaches and marker lights to the rear of the train.
Special thanks to SoundTraxx for providing the TSU-KN1 decoder that was used in the making of this program.

Super helpful video! I've got the same locomotive in front of me right now, along with an F40PH also looking for a sound upgrade. 🙂 Cheers!

The sdn144koa decoder benefits massively from a few CV changes sound wise the other horn file sounds way better CV150=2

I am also about to make a video on my KN1 install in a new P42. Glad this one doesn't require milling of the frame like my PA1 did. I am not doing the ditch light mod in mine just yet.

Give it a try - you will find it's easier than you think, and the KN1 has just the right number of FX outputs! You can do it!

@@tsgmultimedia I will need more supplies for that like the LED's and maybe a better soldering iron, etc. I may just use some of the Amazon links you have for that stuff. I am also trying to get out of the comfort zone and try new things.

John, well done.. the KN1 has a different sound script than the GE, so use the KN1 sound selection reference for selecting the proper prime mover. Also, we have Webinar 8 to teach better soldering tips. Always happy to help you my friend!

Thanks for the detailed video. I enjoy the channel. Looking forward to installing my first KN1 into a Kato E8 that I have had for a few years with a digitrax sound decoder. The motor controls seems amazing. No lurching at all!

That’s a great upgrade. Keep your solder iron tip clean. Polish it, once in a while, with fine sandpaper then “re-tin” it.
