Last time I skied Whistler was 20 years ago. Everyone was complaining about how icy things were in the morning and slushy it was in the afternoon. For me, it was like some of the best days I've had in Perisher or Thredbo
I feel like we're stealing all of Canada's snow. In some Austrian and Swiss ski resorts there is expected to fall around 100+ cm of snow the upcoming 6 days alone, over the past month there has fallen probably around 3 metres of snow or around 10-11 feet
These are conditions we´ve grown upon learning how to ski in Central Europe! Consider yourself to be lucky when having two edges as a skier. Riding that thing on snowboard with one edge is a whole different realm!
Hey! In Upstate New York and Vermont, the ski report for these conditions would read "Good--some rocks"!! But in all fairness, my sister and I arrived at many a Western ski area. for our annual two week ski trip, with the forecast either "Icy, Windy, Frigid Temperatures" or--just as bad, as far as we were concerned "Blue sunny skies, warm all week" UGH! Anyway--you two were really good sports, sticking it out all day!! Thumps up! Lynn in NYC

It’s not necessarily his ego. Sometimes people have calculated the fastest route to care and getting others involved will prolong the suffering. Also staying engaged in your own rescue prevents shock.

Rain like this is NO JOKE! (And can even be dangerous! ...The following freeze may be a blessing in disguise, though.) I recall one year at Snoqualmie (Snowcrummy) Pass when it rained so hard, so fast, that the water flowing over the frozen ground, yet under the snow, literally created a geyser that shot a 1/2 meter thick jet of water several meters in the air! I remember seeing a bunch of collapsed spots, big enough to swallow several people! And, at one of the ski areas, Hyak, the water ate away at the ground, causing several dozen acres of ground, a meter or so deep (and the snow above it), to slide, destroying the entire main face and damaging the lifts... Conversely, I remember 1998 at Mt. Baker!! (record for the most snow recorded anywhere, ever: 1,140 inches!). The snow was so deep that they had to use dynamite to clear it in places... The avarage was a foot of pow every day for the whole season! And, one 100-meter long stretch of a chairlift was actually about 3-4 meters BELOW the snow level, towers and all. It was surreal. So, it goes both ways... This ol' wheel will come around again.
Hey, Squamish guy 93/94 Whistler season had a 80cm base until mid Feb. then the snow came crazy fast, pushing 300cm base by season end. Yup Pineapple express is crazy! Also the local logging road had many culverts washed out! best memory of 93/94 season, mastered hard packed bumps, and learned the east coast expressions of snow. I hope this Pineapple ends soon..... it sucks.
Same thing happened here in Vermont…from GREAT conditions (deep enough to ski out-of-bounds, which is unusual for this early in the season) to a day of pounding rain and 60 degrees F, which left us with nothing! It’ll be back though!
10:00 is so funny. Every time at the exact same spot, whenever you go to ski on Whistler. You see a bunch of snowboarders lying there. That's a flat area and they don't pick up speed so they stop. It is a long walk if you stop right there lol.
Another great review. I was there this morning, Wednesday at Blackcomb. Just did half day. That's right pineapple express knows where we are and it will hunt us till the end of the year.

Thanks for watching. Since I ski a lot of the same runs I tend not to put them in. If you want to learn some more about my favourite runs you should give my guide videos and blog posts a browse!

As an East Coast skier this looks about right, it’s truly no big deal. This is why East Coast skier are so bad ass. We can pretty much ski anything in any condition. It also helps to have skies that handle hard pack. Forget your soft West Coast skies. I also don’t ski the same trails when it sucks. Just so you know this is lousy condition by my home mountain of Killington Vermont. Your mountains are to big to actually blow much snow and Western groomers I find lack much skill. Let’s hope things improve. I am headed out West the end of February. I can honestly tell you things over the past twenty years have been heading in a bad direction.
We have death cookies in Australia too. Some days you just have to wait until 11 am for the ice thaw a tiny bit so that the ski edges will bite into the bullet proof ice!
Man…this is exactly how we ski every day in the Pirineos in Spain. Besides 1 or 2 resorts, snow is like this almost through out the season. Hard, sketchy, icy and thin…that’s the reason I spent 18 years on the same skis. No reason to buy new and get them destroyed. Hahaahah
As an avid skier that lives in Vancouver that also detests going to Whistler and engaging in all the garbage that that scene has become…I couldn’t be happier for Vail Resorts and the shit they are about to go through

In NZ we call those chunks Death Cookies, my knees hurt just thinking about them 😬
We have death cookies in Australia too.
Hahaahah
Heading to Whistler for the first time in Feb. Hoping conditions at Blackcomb will be great then!
I haven't seen conditions this bad in Europe since the 90s. At least we've got a lot more artificial snow to fix this nowadays

“Crystal *pancakes* are feeling awfully tempting”
😂
(it’s the waffle hut)
Good thing you had the new proto skis.
So many regrets..... They didn't deserve that treatment
Same here in Oregon...thoughts and prayers.
Sending my love and prayers hahah
The conditions there always suck. I was there skiing and it was raining at the bottom, blizzard at the top. It’s cause they have an insane vertical.
Sad dry year... thanks for video looks brutal!
I haven't bothered going up yet. I live a half hour south of Whistler and it's like 10°C everyday. Lots of rain
That ice/snow mix will provide a good, solid base layer for the January-February snow fall.
Oh wow, we thought about going yesterday... I'm glad we didn't!!
Probably worth sitting it out for a few days!
@@riseandalpine sounds like a big dump is coming in a few days!
Its coming in the next storm man, 12/27ish expect 3+ft.
Conditions look pretty mint as a new englander
It gets like that in New Zealand and they have to close the mountain for a few days to let the snow "Dry".
As an avid skier that lives in Vancouver that also detests going to Whistler and engaging in all the garbage that that scene has become…I couldn’t be happier for Vail Resorts and the shit they are about to go through
looking forward to hiking there in the winter soon
might have to wait 100 years!
Looks better than what we've got in Tahoe right now.
Skied Loon Mountain in NH after freezing rain storm the night before. Sounded just like this one. Top was solid ice. No fun day
The deep blue ice of Minnesota did my knees in, that ice scraping sounds gave me anxiety.
Thank you for your service
Glad I could be of assistance 😂
Meanwhile, in the upper Midwest we still don't have any snow. 😢 last winter we had more than we knew what do do with.
Poachin the hot tubs till a fresh pile of avalanche. Park day.
what a princess you are.
