Tips from a longtime A4 Lover: - The instrument is essentially semi-modular, and you should look at it as such. Think of each voice like having a Mother-32 with many extra features and extensive digital controls. - The voices can be difficult to tame; they like deliberate tweaks rather than moving quickly in most cases, and IMHO that's how one gets the most rewarding sounds. - If you're ever struggling with the how to set up more modulations, remember that each voice has Velocity/Mod Wheel/Aftertouch/Breath Control "slots". - Don't neglect Performance Mode. It's best set up via Overbridge, but it makes the synth more enjoyable to use no matter how you sequence it. - A4 loves talking to other gear. Since you have that Mixer, send DAW tracks into it, to the FX (which can be sequenced!) and into the voices themselves! - Make extensive use of the CV I/O with anything you can. It gives any semi/modular gear Elektron's sequencer. - Make sure you have s good grasp on how Kits, Patterns, and the Sound Pool work (likely because you have an AR) Most of all, if you get hung up, let it lie for a few days and come back with fresh eyes/ears 😊 A4 really requires patience and practice to master, almost as much as OT, but it's an extremely rewarding Modular System, and there's absolutely nothing else even remotely like it.
No moss growing under your feet ... always in the groove .. exploring .. analyzing .. researching ... always upbeat ... easy and breezy .. cheers and thanks!
As a new Elektron box owner, I always felt they were a bit expensive but with the Digitakt II I feel its price is actually reasonable. What I struggle with though is the more expensive ones, like Rytm, Analog Four and Octatrack. I'm on the lookout for a good synth to complement the Digitakt and I have the M8 that fills that spot quite well but I've also recently renewed my interest in Roland's SH-4d. I like your content since quite a while back, so I really hope you can reconsider DistroKid as sponsor with their shady practices towards both artists and employees.
I bought analog four Mark 1 not long after it came out and then I upgraded to Mark II immediately after it came out. it was my first analog synth and i still love it.
Great video. The music sounds so good. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I've been using the MK1 for years and my impression of it is "4 mono synths in one box". So as you say, the individual outs make sense.
PSA: If you don't need individual outs and/or expression pedal inputs, the Mk1 of this synth used is absolute steal for the same sound engine (sliiightly tweaked tone wise but essentially the same)
Same can’t wait but will they be the same oscilators are they the big bad wolf oscillators now the mk1 was cool audio and they are dated sounding for sure
i have the digitone, syntakt and a4mk2……20 outs directly into my daw using only 3 usb slots using overbridge…..works perfectly. not sure that the smaller boxes not having individual outs is a problem when using usb they can be used for individual outs over usb…???
It's a good point - it's just not the same though. IMO you lose a lot of character when you drop stems into overbridge. I remember doing it a while ago solo with the Digitakt and having to re add all sorts of FX in my DAW which changed the character of the original idea. Using hardware is just a different thing where you have more hands on control and it sounds better. I'm using the SSL Big Six which is fully Analog - but also audio over USB, but that character you hear through the mixer translates to your stems. It's apples and oranges in the end.
thank you so much for your (as always) great video!!! how about the deluge in comparison to the sequencer trilogy you mention in the beginning? I'm looking for a hardware sequencer to go with the vermona drm and I don't use a computer in my setup.
@@LiamKillen i'm sure the hardware is part of the OXI experience, but for those of us who have iPads, and not really wanting to drop that kind of money, i wonder if there's a similar app? I have a couple different apps, but none quite like the OXI seq.
Hi Liam, thank you so much for the interesting video! Can I ask what the device on your left is? Does this thing protect against electrical interference while recording?
For me, the idea of letting a machine come up with melodies on my behalf would be like me getting someone to have sex with my wife on my behalf. Which is more of a comment on how different it is for each of us to interact with these boxes rather than me claiming superiority.🙏
I dont think i will ever sell my A4. Underrated imo. I pair it mostly with a Roland Tr6-s. although it works also very nicely as a drum machine. Amazing dub chords too
Yeah i'll have it till the MK3 comes out haha - one thing that compares to it though is Vermona's Perforumer which is the next thing i'd love to get my hands on 😏
I honestly think elektron could harness the overbridge concept in a standalone hardware device somehow. An elektron mixer with heat bits thrown in. I am hereby claiming my 5% of the profits in advance Mr Elektron
One thing I don't think enough people ever mention on how fat the sounds on the Analog IV can sound. I mean expansive, luscious cinematic bass that just cuts through.
Perfect Timing. I gave back the Digitakt 2 and got a used Analog Four at the Weekend. Looking forward to explore it, especially with Overbridge and FX Plugins 😊
@@LordoftheBadgers I am still working with the "old" Digitone. Because it is only a part from a whole Track. And then the 4 different Sounds are enough. But maybe in the future, maybe. But for the moment I think the A4 is a much better support in my Workflow.

Thx for the tips!!
good one. I enjoy having it and still working to tame it. it really does take effort.
+1! I’ve bought and sold so much gear and the one thing that I’ve never sold and never will is my a4. It’s quite a shy and special machine.
Have had it for 1.5 years with almost every day practicing, sold it for the Digitone and now I want it back. It’s an awesome instrument

Yeah those are good compliments for sure - but for me, nothing beats combining one elektron box with another ! 🔥
I bought analog four Mark 1 not long after it came out and then I upgraded to Mark II immediately after it came out. it was my first analog synth and i still love it.
Yeah so far i'm really digging it too.
Great video. The music sounds so good. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I've been using the MK1 for years and my impression of it is "4 mono synths in one box". So as you say, the individual outs make sense.
Yeah they’re so useful!
Very good ❤ sounds very pro!
Thank you!

Yeah you’re absolutely right
My favourite synth ever. I have 2 pieces (MK1 and MK2), but I love to make standalone sets with one too. Great to see the A4 in your setup.
Great to have it here!
Lovely Elektron thang, has a personality all of it's own
Absolutely
welcome to the A4 fold.
I feel like the mk3 is going to come out like a week after making this video lol
Same can’t wait but will they be the same oscilators are they the big bad wolf oscillators now the mk1 was cool audio and they are dated sounding for sure
@@LiamKillenan A4 2! Elektron is so very inscrutable. We need a mole!

This is elektron’ unsung goat. The new Digitone 2 is epic as well
Digitakt II is also dope AF
thank you so much for your (as always) great video!!!
how about the deluge in comparison to the sequencer trilogy you mention in the beginning?
I'm looking for a hardware sequencer to go with the vermona drm and I don't use a computer in my setup.
Haven’t tried the deluge yettt!
@omg why 😱 anyway, if you ever do try, I would be very curious to know what you think
i wonder if there's an Auv3 app for iPhone or iPad that is like OXI?
There’s nothing quite like the real thing
@@LiamKillen i'm sure the hardware is part of the OXI experience, but for those of us who have iPads, and not really wanting to drop that kind of money, i wonder if there's a similar app? I have a couple different apps, but none quite like the OXI seq.
Hi Liam, thank you so much for the interesting video!
Can I ask what the device on your left is? Does this thing protect against electrical interference while recording?
I think you’re talking about the battery! That’s a Jackery battery!
@@LiamKilleninteresting? why do you use it? does it make it easier to "throw together" a setup?
Very nice, A4 is a great machine, enjoy!
Thx for watching!!
Are you going to release this as a track?
No plans for it yet !
Very Stephan Bodzin like ❤❤
I'll have to check this dude out.
@LiamKillen liebe ist album
does the Analog four2 have a euclidean sequencer mode? you could still get some interesting random pattern without the oxi
I ahven't used it but I believe that it does have a euclidean mode which is cool - it's still not quite the same as Oxi One's Matriceal.
No, the Rytm MkII has it, but not the A4. Yet, anyways.
Why is this compared to the Syntakt? They’re very different
There’s a lot of similarities in between all current Elektron boxes
For me, the idea of letting a machine come up with melodies on my behalf would be like me getting someone to have sex with my wife on my behalf. Which is more of a comment on how different it is for each of us to interact with these boxes rather than me claiming superiority.🙏
Veryyy weird comparison lol
More A4 video’s please!
Noted!
I need those Digitone knobs... where are they from?
I actually don't remember - i think the company's called 3D waves ? 🤔
I dont think i will ever sell my A4. Underrated imo. I pair it mostly with a Roland Tr6-s. although it works also very nicely as a drum machine. Amazing dub chords too

Hah! I knew it was only a matter of time before you got one. I love mine and it goes so well with the RYTM. Congrats!!
Haven't tried it out with the Rtym but I already know that's an absolutely beastly combo.
It’s really awesome! I also use it as a four voice poly synth as well but tend to use it for blips and boops
To be fair all the newer elektron boxes (including the analog 4) have inidividual outs via overbridge in your DAW.
It's just not the same as doing it via a mixer.
I haven’t discovered that yet! Still got some digging to do
video starts at 1:22 ✨
I guess you don’t realize that there are time stamps in the description? And waddayaknow there’s a time stamp that starts at 1:22 lol
@@LiamKillen respect for the honesty ✨
I'd much rather just plug notes into the sequencer. I hate this generative crap.
hey thats fair lol - at the same time, it doesn't have to be generative though in regards to the oxi one.
Not for me bro
Perfect Timing. I gave back the Digitakt 2 and got a used Analog Four at the Weekend. Looking forward to explore it, especially with Overbridge and FX Plugins 😊
You won’t be disappointed!!
I am definitely tempted on digitone 2 but I'm deffo keeping the OG takt
I miss my a4. Didn't give it a decent chance

@ so am I (old digitone). Not upgrading for a while yet
