What's also amazing, is that Bruce's solution to every problem is to over-engineer the system to near-perfection, and it's just stunning how every next iteration is more and more technically impressive.
This could have easily been a multi-part series, but had to wrap up years of struggles in 25 minutes. Definitely an inspiration and a lesson in persistence. Thanks.
That Volkswagen is seriously one of the coolest race built cars in the world. I agree with the other commenter, cleetus needs to do a collaboration with this guy
@@asylumental Why would You suggest any collaboration of Bruce Morehouse with Garrett Mitchell, Cleetus McFarland Racing ??!! Bruce is clearly far above them within racing, knowledge, building his custom vehicle ! Bruce is clearly focused upon more serious racing and not antics. Perhaps Brent, Jaime PFI Speed could be some help and certainly within Colorado; If they do not already have connections. All The Best, Sincerely
The first video of the Golf they showed from 5 years ago, I got to see in person. I was at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado. I was there with my dad who was driving the Rainmaker WRX (which was featured on TRC). He mentioned there was a Golf with TWO ENGINES! It was an amazing day. One ill never forget. Thank you guys for that 🙏
This car never fails to remind me of the "silliest" VW I ever saw online. Back..maybe 20 years or more, someone posted a green old Scirocco (Mk1 or 2?) from a European car magazine. The car was gutted, caged and had two superbike motors in the hatch, one driving each wheel (somehow linked via throttle management?). I believe they may have even been Hayabusa motors. But picture a 1500-1600 pound Scirocco with 11-13,000 RPM at the rear wheels. If you dig really hard you can find one blurry picture of it from an old VwVortex post...but the car has never left my mind. Just sounds like an absolute hilarious thing to build/drive.
A wayyy cool fella. Loved listening to him detail all the struggles he encountered AND how he came to resolutions for each. All we can say is WOWZER!! 🙂
I envy folks like Bruce who have the creativity, drive, willpower, patience, and expertise to be able to pull something crazy like this off. Mad props, as a fellow VW enthusiast.
Met Bruce at one of the last Bandimere test and tunes. Super nice dude. Seeing this car in person is absolutely mental. My head hurt as he was explaining the engineering behind it.
That rear suspension design is awesome, I'm excited to see how it works! It's been so cool seeing this car change over time, thanks for capture the story for all of us to enjoy! Unreal work Bruce
This was a killer video 1320.. This dude kicks ass^^. The end where he explains the break-shit point of the rear engine… Dude sends it. Solid material.
This gets me thinking about, if he has a kid, how significant it will be for him to pass this down to them one day. At that point you're not getting a car that your Dad owned. You're getting the physical manifestation of decades worth of his life. Aspects of himself are ingrained into the very core of this vehicle. Very few things in life today are able to compare to that.
Awesome story, bloke and machine! The devotion, development and it’s change’s over the years at this this level is something anyone could be proud of! It blew my mind though the fact it’s been through so much with an open diff!
This man deserves a Guinness World Record for being the most patient person dealing with a VW. My hero. Onlyy truue volkswagoneer knows what he is talking about
The journey this guy has had is amazing. Thank you 1320 for giving him a dedicated video. I hope you keep following him because he is the epitome of what racing is. Awesome! 👍🍻🇺🇲
This man is a legend in the car game and to do most of the work himself shows why he is pulling the times he does the car and the driver is one great story.
Awesome ingenuity! I personally admire how Bruce thinks outside the box and perseveres through every challenge. I hope to see more of this car in the near future.
Actually Bruce clearly drew from others to develop his unique VW, VR12, "Forrest Gump" drag racing vehicle along with his earlier mini, circle track VW racing vehicle. This is not actually 'outside the box' thinking, rather applying proper thinking, assistance from other with proper knowledge, thus implementing these together within his unique VW.
i just noticed, DeSoto speedway is now freedom factory! its cool to see that little clip of DeSoto @ 1:54 of a race in the 90s, now its been revived to its former glory and then some. it would be cool seeing bruce at the freedom factory and then drag race with good ole cleet at the drag strip.
Love these longer format stories - thank you for adding this series and I'm looking forward to enjoying these for a long time, hopefully you keep these going!❤
This was me back in the days. I had many built 16v's, mk2's, Rocco's, etc. then got into the VR, swapped many into mk2. Love them, not just for the sound, but the torque. Big turbo like a 35R and up on a VR definitely needs hardened straight cut gears in the trans. 3rd loves to shear from all the torque in general. Been there 👍
I remember watching the Volkswagen Wabbits racing back in the late 70’s and early 80’s at Mid Ohio and thought they were so cool watching them go around the corner lifting a rear tire in the air. To think about what effort you have put into this car is amazing and how far the technology has come over the decades. 🍻
I love that the speed shop was onboard with his plan. All too often you come across people in the business tell you 'nyah don't bother, just do this or that' related to things that already exists and kits that are out there. Them accepting the challenge though is a way of pushing the envelope further from what is already known (and to a certain extent tried and proven) and push it to new areas and forms that wouldn't be reached through conventional means. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but speed shops like that can change history :D
This is an amazing story of successes, you never failed, you just learned more! I think this is the most badass VW ever built, totally love the green too! I know the struggles of dialing in 2 engines, My Smart fortwo Dual engine is a bear to drive, trying to balance both torque curves while driving is a challenge. I have a dial on the steering wheel to adjust the front up or down on the fly. Throttle by wire on both engines is the only way to go.
Shoutout for dude linking Hanksvile Hotrods...Sooner or later everybody needs some help along the way. Big props for shouting out the guys along the way dude!

1:59 ohhhhhh damn, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that the freedom factory now? That is truly amazing footage and to see that now and then see the freedom factory…. Mind blowing 🤯
Mistake was leaving the mk2 platform. The mk3 is double weight of the 2. I did the same and went back to mk2. 570 bhp through the front wheels . Every brace available, lsd many strengthening upgrades and end result was a 3/4” chassis twist. Ouch but great times and lots of scary fun. Long live the 12v vr6 engine.
My first car was an 82 vw rabbit ,,my friends had trucks ,they laughed till y put four wheeler tires on ,when they got stuck ,I would drive around them lol,
This guy is such an inspiration. I've been watching him on 1320 forever and every time I see him it's such a good feeling to see a vw guy doing something so cool.
I got rides to high school with a guy that drove a bone stock slammed 8v jetta. He literally had to redline it at every light just to keep up with traffic. It also had a straight piped exhaust. It was embarrasing to ride in 😅
The next step will be to control the springs and dampers first on the rear axle and then on the front axle. The car has more than enough power, but putting this power on the road is the high school of acceleration. So if you first pump up the back of the car when starting, then accelerate and allow the rear axle to deflect in a controlled manner, then you can transfer a lot more power, have better control over the car and can lower the body at higher speeds to have less wind resistance. Up to around 160 km/h or 100 miles, almost all of the power is on the rear axle. From this speed onwards, the aerodynamics begin to give you enough contact pressure on the road. The better the car grips the road, the higher the power transmission. In the 1970s there were cars in Formula 1 that had extra brooms under the sides of the cars to increase the negative pressure under the cars. Theoretically, with this negative pressure they could have driven on the ceiling of a tunnel without falling down.
Ha Impo! Savvy dropped his race car off at our shop before disappearing to Detriot! It was sitting outside for like a year! I built a mid engine twin turbo Corrado with Schimmel 20 years ago. Cool to see this guy using SP parts! I remember when Bill designed those intake manifolds! Crazy to see they're still relevant!
@@ericthompson2920 Was that the SOHC Honda he dropped off? I used to go to Impo in the late 90's. I remember the first time I met Bill. He did not have a driver's license because he was running from the po-po in his Corrado doing like 180mph if I remember. Helicopters and all. Lol
These types of builds are super cool. Even though it has 2000 hp, it doesn’t have the top end and speed of a 2000 hp car. It has the acceleration of a 2000 hp car but the top speed of a 1000 hp car.
