  • We're in for a treat today--Adam shares the story of his Star Trek Captain's Chair, which he became obsessed with building from scratch after acquiring an insufficient replica. With the help of friend Jeremy Williams, Adam spends a day wiring in the electronics to bring his new Enterprise command chair to life. After much problem solving and troubleshooting, the effort pays off in a big way!

      Adam Savage great build on Star Trek Captain seat I bet you wouldn't shopping or would love this but I'm glad to see that you have completed it also found it educational and very technical to do but I'm glad your friend is there with you all the best in the new season and have an excellent Christmas kcb third son of Elvis Presley

      BlobVanDam the magic of editing. this video alone took at least 2 days of building and 2 weeks of waiting on stuff to come in. i assume he uses a typical work week of monday to friday for actual work and tries to have one day a week that he uses for personal. thats what i try to do, and i fit in some extra work where i can.

    Um to say this is straining the meaning of "One day Build" (2 guys talking for week beforehand then 3 guys working for 8 hours on one day and then reconvening weeks later....all in order to tweak an already completed project that, itself took more than 11 days) is a galactic understatement. It cannae b' done cap'n!!! And to say "the wiring" is a one day build is like saying the last mile of a marathon is easy. There is no point to wiring up a a chair...WITHOUT THE CHAIR. That said, Adam is outstanding and all is forgiven! Great vid.

      @viktorlofstedt5955 8 років тому +8

      Speakers + amp , Powersupplies, Electronics, Wires first
      speakers plus amp is around few hundred and you can get it cheaper, powersupplies lets have 2x 20 amp 50 $ each, the arduino is dirt cheap say 30 $ to get all the breadboards etc, leds and other electronics around 100 $. this sub totals to 380.
      now the chair, wood, leather upholstery around few hundred bucks, the custom molds and custom switches some hundreds more. that sub totals to 400.
      so 380 and 400 makes 780$ before factoring in labor.
      Which is then the option of finishing the thing or learning every single used technique first. Heavily simplifying material is 1/3 of total costs so that gives us an estimate of 2340$.
      Adams shop, the cost of an electrical engine and a salary for a shop assistant not included.
      If i would make this i would set a budget of 3k and order some of the stuff prefab to compensate for the lack of wood shop.

    Adam. I'm picturing the next Star Trek chair could be the life-support chair where Captain Pike uses blinking lights to communicate. It could move around using a joystick underneath the top. You could simply sit in it stone faced with the burn makeup and mouth open looking like Captain Pike as you putter around Comic Com using the joystick. That would be EPIC on multiple levels. You could make it extra cool by being able to play audio of Captain Pike.

    What I'd love to see with some of these builds is the actors reactions to seeing them. Like get Shatner in the shop to take a seat and geek out over how awesome Adam's work is. Or better yet...Harrison Ford to get that blaster in his hands! Adam would probably be geeked but I think the actors would be even more reminiscent and emotional about reliving the feeling of those props after 20-30 years.

    I totally love all of Adam's UA-cam and Tested content. I only discovered these vids a few years back and was thrilled to find that my self taught maker techniques paralleled his so closely. while I haven't read all the comments I do have a possible explanation for the failed LED issues. Polystyrene, while being an incredibly versatile material and possibly my personal favorite plastic, is an extremely evil conduit for creating ESD (electrostatic discharge). I've had several failures while trying to use this material for reflectors or enclosures on projects that used LED lighting. That's been my experience anyway.
