- In Stockholm, Sweden we talk to Per Gessle of Roxette to talk about 'The Look'. This interview was done a few weeks before Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson passed away. A short documentary by Top 2000 a gogo from 2019 (Dutch Public Television).
Please never stop making these "Behind The Song" video's. They are an absolute treasure.
Thanks! Glad you like it.
100% agree.....these short videos are excellent, just enough of an insight into the song .👍
Damn right!!! I’m amazed that the world didn’t pick it up yet as they are small diamonds that will gain value as they become older.
Agree I love them
Spread the word!
I'll never get tired of this song. RIP Marie
yes RIP to her! she had one of the best voices in modern music!
She's dead?! I never knew that.....
VauxhallViva1975 yes. Just within the last few months
@@VauxhallViva1975 17 year long battle with cancer 🙁
@@EphemeralProductions Yeah, Wikipedia just told me that - December 2019. :( It Must Have Been Love(but it's over now) was another of my favourites. That was a lovely song.
Kudos to that exchange student who brought Look Sharp back to the U.S. and gave it to that Minneapolis radio station!
Holly King hell yeah, if not for the exchange student, we may not ever have gotten to know Roxette.
KDWB (and Minneapolis in general) wasn’t a market where songs became hits. In this case it was serendipity that allowed it to happen. There were two CHR(Top 40) stations in Minneapolis at the time(WLOL was the other at 99.5 FM)
And they almost didn’t play it. The student went back to get his CD and the program director at KDWB listened to it and put it on the air. Other stations heard it about it and wanted the song so they made copies and sent them out. So with no record deal in the US they had a hit.
Funny thing is that Prince, famously from Minneapolis, released a song the previous year called "you got the look" with a female singer
Per is an absolute genius. Incredible how many great songs he wrote and one of the nicest and most gracious people in the business as well.
Agreed, and Marie's voice....! RIP...
hes better than Paul McCartney
@@slowfuse probably true lol
RIP Marie Fredriksson 🙏. 09 December 2019
A tragic los it is....
She has been gone over a year now, such a big part of my childhood I turned all my friends onto Roxette I was always talking about them and listening to them.
Cancer sucks
Best music Group from Sweden 👍👍🇸🇪
ROXETTE FOREVER!! MY FAVOURITE BAND!
RIP Marie, terrific singer and stunning beauty.
Marie will never be forgotten - Roxette's music will be around forever and that will ensure it.
I've met them when they came to my country, Uruguay, and they were very nice, pleasant, lovely people. Marie was an extremely humble and humane person with so much talent. I miss her a lot to this day and forever, really. She was so kind to me whenever we had little conversations throughout the following years. I talked to her when she was at a radio station in Stockholm and she was the nicest person you can find wherever but especially in the music bizz. She was just special, unique. Thank you for posting this video with that beautiful footage of the glorious past or Roxette ♥
If people only realised just how many of the worlds greatest pop songs originated from Sweden their jokes about Ikea and meatballs would stop overnight. Such talented and passionate writers
When I used to live closer to an Ikea store, I'd stop in just to have lunch quite regularly - great price on the meatballs and potatoes! Yum!
No they wouldn't. Those meatballs are damn good. No need to dismiss them.
Are Roxette in the rock hall of fame, if not they should be. R.I.P Marie one of the greatest rock singer's.
This is not rock, this is force-fed pop which wasn't even a hit on Mtv, it was a VH1 hit.
No Max and I seriously doubt they will be anytime soon. Maybe when we are dead and gone.
Roxette is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet. There is a lack of 80's bands in the Hall at the moment.
Nope. I guess they're not Rock and roll enough, like Whitney Houston, B.I.G., NWA...
There’s more rack to their formula than Simon and Garfunkel, and they are in.
Per and Marie.. one of the best duet combos in the history of music. The Look.. what a classic track.
That stellar synth/guitar combo is badass.
More new music needs to strive for what they gave us.
You can’t get more 80s than Roxette. They ARE the 80s! Great band. Great music. And RIP Marie. We miss you. 💓💓
They hit it big at the tail end of the 80s though
Love Roxette and this song! 32 years later, still sounds good
so sad that we lost one of the most beautiful voices God ever created when the beautiful Marie lost her battle with cancer this past Dec. I loved Roxette!!!
Marie may be gone, but she'll never be forgotten.
The production of this song is phenomenal. The guitars are so clean yet punchy.
Yes, it sounds so good even today!
JONAS ISACSSON
I love the pride he has in his country!!! :)
R.I.P. Marie, your great voice will be missed. Thank God we will always have all these great albums.
Love this. Growing up in Minneapolis I distinctly remember this song debuting on 101.3 KDWB! So awesome!
Brian Phillips who was KDWB Program Director has said Dean Cushman(the student who brought the album back) was like a good A&R man and was aggressive but not pushy and eventually got the album listened to.
For learning how to program that synthesizer he wrote a global hit... just incredible...
JUST GREAT... LOVE ALL ROXETTE SONGS ARE AMAZING 🎸🥁🥁🎤🎼🎼🎸🎸🎸🥁🎤🎼💖
thats one of those songs that you never get sick of.
Always loved Roxette. I've still got Look Sharp! album that I bought in 88 or 89. I'd lay down in front of the record player, half under my bed, with the speakers on either side of my head. I'd then lean the tops together forming a triangle and there I'd lay listening to the album, only getting up to change sides. Even though Look Sharp! has been out for over 30 years, it still sounds fresh. I was so in love with Marie's voice, such a range and power and her vibrato was just wonderful. Thank you Marie, and thank you Per! Even though sadly Marie is resting, her voice will love on forever! 🤘🏻🇦🇺😊
One of my favorite songs from the 80s. Came out while I was stationed in Erlangen Germany. Great memories.
2:15 I love Per's personality. He's so chipper!
RIP Marie. Lovely voice
I felt in love with Roxette because of this song, back in the days...
we miss you Marie
He is a down to earth genuine musician!
My love for music started somewhere here many years ago
The Look is one of the best songs from the 80s!
One of the best band ever..Roxette forever ✌
Great band and great memories......
Such an intelligent and innovative band. I will never get tired of listening to their amazing hits
Miss her so much... Her voice was just amazing... And still is !!!
I wish i could travel in time and meet Marie and Per gessle i really love this band
She had the best hair!
One of the most talented songwriters of the 80s/90s!
One of the best music groups in history!
Definitely one of the music of all time, well my favourite music...
One of my favorite songs, ever!!!
What a band! Classic!!!! Still play the songs in my car! Genius!
The King & Queen of Europe.... I was always 'Spending My Time' listening to Roxette...... R.I.P. Marie, your voice will live forever......
Al vanaf begin (eind jaren 80) fan van Roxette en nog steeds. R.i.p. Marie 😘
Per, Roxette is the legendary band! We love you forever!
What a great behind the scenes look into the creation of 'The Look.' Per Gessle does a wonderful job telling how this song became a hit.
I wanna hear Per talk about Roxette songs all day now.
There is another one about It must have been love: ua-cam.com/video/9b9u2L5H7Hg/v-deo.htmlsi=cgPYX0VbF6vaPPLN
These two have such a beautiful chemistry working together it's so amazing to listen and watch them preforming together
Per....you are a sensational songwriter......Love you Roxette......R.I.P.. Marie...........
I love them so much, even though I wasn’t born yet ❤️
I bought every album. Just brilliant.
RIP Marie
I grew up listening to Roxette and absolutely loved Per's vocals. The Look, How Do You Do!, Fingertips, Cinnamon Street, Vulnerable, Silver Blue, and Harleys and Indians (Riders in the Sky) were some of my favourite Roxette songs. So glad I got the chance to see Roxette live. Words can't describe what your music means to me.
You`re just reminding me of my childhood (Born 1980). Thanks for that, mate !!
It's like I could have written this. Same here.
Me too
Me too, the soundtrack to my childhood, 91 joyride album as a 9 year old then bought look sharp then tourism as well as mario bros song....
Best duo. My first cd i bought at only 10 years old was joyride. Love ♥️
My favorite band of all time. From Their Title of their song from A-Z .. Just Fantastic
The sound of my youth. Was such a cool song.
It is STILL a cool song.
Thanks Per for creating beautiful music
1988. Oh i was 8 years old. I live with the songs of Roxette since then.
There is no Roxette with out Per Gessle, amazing writer and singer!
The greatest song of the 1980's - yes it's that great - Roxette are awesome - R.I.P Marie.
Hats off to Mr. Gessle. He and Marie were a match made in heaven. We won't ever find such a fine music combination. I am lucky I was born in the right time to see them live.
Marie, such a beautiful person and voice. I still listen. Paint, Keep Me Waiting, Queen of Rain.
I remember when this song came out in Chile, where I grew up. It was a Huge hit right away!. Then followed all the other hits by this Amazing band. Such a great duo, their talent, and sound was very unique for that time period. I Love how Per is telling the story, and you can see the Love and pride he has for his country. . Such a humble man and a Musical Genious!.
Same in Australia, it was number one on the ARIA chart.
👍 they had the look, and the sound. And it looked and sounded most excellent.
Goose bumps.
I'm really sad about the fact that there will never be a new song again. I was a real big fan since I was 14. I'm almost 20 now and I'm still not over her death after months.. Roxette made me, me. And gave me reasons to live in my darkest days. I will forever remember and listen to roxette❤️🦋
Per; what a sweetheart.
Time has a way of sneaking up on you. Miss you Marie.R.I.P. And miss those days. Never get tired of listening to your voice and the music.
Once of my favourite song forever and ever ❤😊
a song i still turn up when it comes over the car radio
Such a great band and a very fresh step moving from the late 80's into the 90's. Marie's passing was so sad, such a great talent.
I grew up with Roxette music, so sad what happened to Marie, RIP.
Man, this was HUGE in South Africa back in the late 80`s and early 90`s....
I know! Roxette was part of our culture growing up! They were everywhere and everything. A special part of my fabric growing up! ❤️
@@TheFairyintheFishBowl My best memory from the album was my first slow dance at a house party when I was in Standard 5 to "Listen To Your Heart" with my first girlfriend,, I got my first proper kiss that night too...
@@ca9968 aaaah! Rosette was MADE for slow dancing back in the day…what great memories…How lovely that music connects us so intrinsically, and defines our memories so beautifully …nice!
One of the best songs ever.
Always loved this song and many others by Roxette.
R.I.P Marie
You are missed
I never liked this song but like anyone growing up in that time period if you listened to the radio this has been stuck in your head before. Now in retrospect & with the help of this story I have so much appreciation for this song in its newly found digital era glory. We've grown leaps & bounds. One who was born in 1976 was able to see so much happen in such a small time period. Life is amazing!!!!!
Still love that record to this day. RIP Marie, a wonderful breath of fresh air when the music scene really needed it.
this GROUP IS A TREASURE WE MISS MARIE!!
Love him! Friendy, kind, with a healthy confidence
Everything they did was amazing.
I love this song. The look sharp album is fantastic. Love Per and Marie.
Had such a crush on Marie! I does anyone want to go back there right now? Great time to be young!!
i am a metal head, but this song and band was so epic. I love it since i was a teenager when it came out
I remember when this came out and loved that new sound. Too bad Marie left us recently.
I lived in Canada, heard Roxette and that was it. My favourite group! Per is a genius and together with Marie they are magic. Their music has something no one else's has. I live in Sweden... was SO saddened by Marie's health problems, hoped she would recover completely and was shocked when she died. She's gone..... but we shared a culture and a country and that makes me feel good. Carry on Per, thank you, you and Marie, super talents!
Pers was and is still a genius. We knew that then Bev.
You both were and will always be my favorite musical legends ever.
I love Per so much!! Always that guitar man behind Marie, allowing her to have the spotlight, while he was the words she was singing! Thank you, Roxette! Rip, beloved Marie, we'll never forget you!!
For all beginning bands: one enthusiastic fan can make a difference.
Used to listen to you guys as a kid and still does. Love you guys.
They were the first concert I ever went to. It was amazing.
My Top Roxette songs are:
1. It must have been love
2. Listen to your heart
3. The look
4. Vulnerable
5. Dangerous
Black Iron Man my nr 1 , you don,t understand me 😎
Are there any others? JK! ;-) You missed 'Fading like a Flower'! RIP Marie!
I must add "The Big L"
Silver Blue (studio version)
Black Iron Man how about beautiful «Queen of Rain”?
I remember the first time I heard the song and saw the video I couldn't take my eyes off it. What a song!
I think they took a bit of Straight up by Paula Abdul, but not sure what was first...
Now THIS is a song! Love it so much!!!
CD Players just hit my country, so I got one (took all my savings!), and I bought my first CD... The Look. Hearing the song with such clarity, and their voices... It changed my love for music forever.
Wooow! Great video. Remember the song well. Interesting how he talks in such detail about the sound. He is right too, it doesn't sound like LA or London production at the time, it has a unique sound which identifies it as Swedish. I always think Roxette sounded like 'ice cold glass'..... and what a voice she had! Sounds like a cool insightful guy, and clearly still knows his onions.
You're right, it sounds like freeze-dried pop.
This video is pure gold! Per is a genius! Rip Marie
Wow ! 1988 , I bought a tape to know Roxette , and now I watch this video on your channel , thank you !
That's amazing. His vision was of her singing the songs and him writing them. So he fought not to be the singer. But sometimes you have to submit to the requirements of a great song.
Brilliant song from a brilliant artist
Roxette songs are AWESOME! Marie's voice will live for ever! And Per is an incredible song writer!
My 9 year old son loves this song
My brother was so obsessed with Roxette, that he named his daughter Roxette. True story.
