a lot of people have complained about the lack of female railway engines appearing in the RWS over the years calming that the books was sexist. does that make Daisy and Mavis special in a way
I agree 100%, and this is coming from someone who liked her motherly side in those episodes. Mavis is my favourite diesel, maybe even my favourite engine, and having her character more like the books and more episodes with her and Toby would have been great. Empathy with Salty wanting to get out of the quarry, balancing her ambitions with her duties, lots of good stuff. They could still do something similar to her TV role with Bill and Ben, maybe more of a cool big sister role than motherly. Dealing with their antics, and realising that it must have been similar to what Toby went through with her, might make her respect the tram more.
I'm not against the idea of Mavis developing into a more authoritative character, since it would show how much she's learned from Toby, how much she's matured since her first story and would help reinforce the idea that she is the one in charge of the quarry. The trouble is though, apart from the end of 'Toby's Tightrope', we don't actually get to see her development from her stubborn tomboy persona into a more mature character.
I can agree that not continuing the Mavis/Toby dynamic into the CGI era was a mistake. It's probably caused by how Toby was demoted to "That old guy who's made of wood" Diluting him down like that was a major disservice to Toby. Yes he's old but, as i learned from when Dark Magician was put through the Time Wizard effect; "With age comes wisdom" Toby's old but he's wise and knowledgeable when it comes to shunting. His age and general basis has made him not that strong, but C Awdry proved he CAN be strong in Toby's Megatrain. I like Toby and he's my brother's favourite character. He's never really had his own iconic voice in the show, aside from maybe TATMR which got him pretty accurately. His CGI Era voice, both UK & US, just make him a doddering wimp, though he DID have some moments appropriate of his original personality.
Toby is a whole other Kettle of fish, while I love the Brennier era they did him, Percy and Henry so dirty character wise and its a crying shame. Its a pity all 3 were converted into wimps. The best use of Toby in that time was "The Truth About Toby" and I would have loved to have seen more of that fed up old man who just wants to do his job right while others are failing around him. Mavis would have been perfect for that. We see in season 20 Toby works up at the Quarry and having an episode with Mavis where she makes some old mistakes and her and Toby fall out over it would have been great. Maybe then having Toby so set in his ways he makes a mistake by not adapting to the situation and have Mavis prove she has learnt something.
@@railwaysparrow Gonna go watch that episode to see what you're referring to. ua-cam.com/video/TPF9Yhqlyo8/v-deo.html Funnily enough; Percy & Henry are my favourite characters, who often trade between 2nd and 1st depending on my mood. Percy i like cos he's an adorable grumpy boy. Recent rumanations have shown Henry and i are very similar; green and friendly but can be rather irritable.
Not continuing the Duck/Diesel dynamic into the CGI era was a mistake too. They should encountered each other in CGI just like in the model era. Too bad Andrew Brenner, Micheal White and the other writers never think of it.
@@DavidBContentExtravaganza3967 I'm genuinely surprised they didn't have Duck in Thomas' role in 'Diesel and the Ducklings' really. It would have been perfect. I get Thomas kinda took over as Diesel's rival in the seasons between that (and their feud has seen more dimensions than with Duck) but seriously, Diesel and the DUCKLINGS. Concerning Toby, while I don't mind the more doddering Toby, at least in the Brenner era where it's USUALLY toned down, I admit they could have done with more episodes that didn't just play on his nerves. We never saw him much with Mavis or Percy (though at least his James rivalry reemerged a few times). Hasty Hannah was a kind of fun episode though, it starts off a Mavis-type dynamic with him trying to draw the line, and only turns into 'reducing Toby to a nervous wreck' after she almost kills him a couple times over. Toby's New Friend was also rather good, it shown Toby as jovial and wise but irritable when wound up enough. I will also say I think 'wimp Percy' also got downplayed heavily after his voice switch. We sadly didn't see much of his old cheeky side again, but at least he wasn't just a scared little kid all the time. Henry on the other hand...
Apparently Rick Sigglekow, who produced 'Shining Time Station' with Britt Allcroft, considered Daisy to be too sexist a character to flaunt as a female example in the TV series, especially given how she was portrayed in Season 2; this was according to information I discovered on a Twitter post. As such, Daisy was dropped in favour of giving Diesel a slightly strange presence filling the role; the narration was left unaltered from the source material, making it therefore less legitimate that Diesel should not know about the trouble trucks are when he had already fallen under their spite in his previous appearances. Daisy, being a socially-oriented railcar, never even considered pulling trucks in her life, so naturally she would not know the least about them but kept it confidential when trying to assure the ruffled Mavis she can do better. Makes me wonder how it would have looked in adapted form; would they have expanded on Mavis's connection with Daisy a bit? Like the idea of a follow-up story where Mavis was left to be humiliated by appeasing Daisy when she wasn't exactly being honest with her, and Toby had to help rectify the dispute that resulted. Might have been something. Regards, Samuel Farris.
The videos are well thought out, but you need a better microphone. That screeching echo in the background is really distracting and sometimes muffles your quiet styled narration. Also around the six minute mark a lot of the video is just a blurred image.
I actually like Diesel as the one giving Mavis bad advice over Daisy in the original story because with the original story, it more likely seems to me that if Wilbert Awdry was keeping a status quo on Daisy, and that I found odd when I knew about the Railway Series version of the story. Daisy had already learned that making others do work for her and being lazy and stubborn can get him into trouble with Sir Topham Hatt, so I don't get why Awdry had to use her instead of another character behind the scenes of giving Mavis bad advice.
Its stated in the story Daisy isn't trying to do anything. She just got excited to speak to another diesel for the first time so when she saw Mavis was annoyed at Toby she copied her to try get on Mavis's good side.
I think Toby and Mavis' dynamic is fine as it is in the TV show as well as Mavis' character development. Britt and David did the best they can to adapt it so cut them slack please. The TV show takes a different course from the books you know. But I suppose that they should have a CGI episode together just like Duck and Diesel should have as well.
4:40 Actually, everything Mavis said to Daisy in the book, she says to Diesel in the show, too. That wasn't really much of a difference.
A small clip around the 6 minute mark has been blurred as Mattel claimed I was not using the footage from Salty's Secret fairly. Sorry!
