Mike is one of those guitarist that, at first glance, doesn't come as "technical" as others musicians. Then you kinda realize the complexity and originality of his playing... Such an accomplished musician. I'm so happy to see the attention that Spirit Box is getting.
Considering songs like the beauty of suffering, aphids, belcarra, not to mention older stuff like gift of death from IWABO, I don’t really agree with the first sentence lol
a lot of intricacies i would have never guessed when listening to the full song - some parts just meld in with the whole wash of everything else. Not a bad thing, I'm a shoegaze fan and I get a similar vibe from Spiritbox! which I love. I'm sure the song wouldn't have the same magic if it were written any other way. Such incredible musicians.
Mike is literally one of my favorite guitarists at this point. I mean he's the reason I bought my first 7 string today :D. Also would like to add that your riffs give me so much inspiration and just make me want to push myself to become a better guitarist myself :).
I felt that, I’m fortunate to have one of my own, I need to play it more, take care of it more, it’s a blessing… instruments are not tools, they’re gifts.
Love that dotted 8th delay embellishment at the 2:35 time mark. It's a bit buried in the album mix, but really shines here. If you have headphones/earbuds pay close attention. It's in ping-pong stereo. Really cool.
Damn, Mike puts so much into his riffs that it almost feels like he's improvising them on the spot. And he gets so many different sounds of out his guitars. Crazy playing. Almost makes me wish you could always hear the guitar clearly in the mix, but I know there's an artistic reason to write the music a certain way.
Had the album going in the car on the way home from work today - I had to listen to this song a couple of times on repeat after realizing the song structure was messing with my head. Killer writing.
So technical and so creative!! I love the bending theme throughout, especially since it actually makes for a nice musical motif rather than feeling gimmicky. This album is phenomenal.
Knew Mike was busy in this one but it's always cool to see how much! Love his play throughs as much as Courtneys one takes! The Liquid Metal videos are bomb too and really were a great xmas present last year!! Thanks guys, can't wait to see you in Arizona!!!!
I love how dynamic and varied these guitar parts are. Often they aren't the biggest or loudest thing in the song but the addition to the soundscape is amazing. Mike you're super talented.

Spiritbox has quickly become one of my favourite bands. The songs on Eternal Blue are amazing and I'm not just talking performance and musical skill, I'm talking composition and "hit level". Super impressive. If you ever get sick of "being in a band" or just need to expand the songwriting platform; you guys could just go around writing songs for misc pop stars. Stellar stuff!
Dude this needs to be classified as guitar virtuoso level playing. I am sure a lot of people may not realize the technicality of this, but just WOW. Guy is literally all over the fretboard at high speeds. This is why Spiritbox sounds so dynamic and amazing.
One of the best songs off of the AOTY. Mike is an amazing guitarist, that takes his technicality on a ride with a simple melody. Like a supercar, nobody knows whats going on under the hood, but damn you can feel it.
Mike’s creativity writing guitar parts is unmatched right now. The difference between good guitarists and great ones is how well they play to fit the song and he literally comes up with the perfect parts every single time, it’s been so cool to listen to as more songs come out/more of these playthrough videos get put out too
Michael challenges himself with his own riffs. That’s what makes him so great. That riff in the verse seems so tough to get through but he nails it. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I am in my 50s and grew up on Ozzy & EVH. I have not been able to get into alot of new music in the last 20 years. I believe Mike's playing & composing to be timeless. Just incredible compositions! Keep rocking and pushing music into the future! Just phenomenal! Thank you!
In a few months I'll be 60, I was just like you into Ozzy etc.. but over 10 years ago I discovered this Style( and djent. Since then this music makes me feel more alive than ozzy, priest etc ever did. I don't miss those days at all
This song is just phenomenal, everything from the ambience and, Mike's next level guitar skils to Courtney's hypnotic voice! Spiritbox is a powerhouse of sound! Love this track! Especially the guitar, Courtney's vocals compliment it so well! Ya'll are awesome! I seriously can't wait for the opportunity to see ya'll play live in concert! Keep'em coming! Yall are on a roll!
Love watching your playthroughs because you begin to notice little things you wouldn't have known about when you listen to the full release...brilliant
From day one I knew I’d be watching this guys play throughs out of absolute curiosity of a riff. It’s been a while since I’ve been curious. This band makes me want to pick up my guitar. Mike is an absolute madman on the strings 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 this band is more than inspiring.
This album is a masterpiece front to back. Listen every day at least twice. Hearing this play through gives me another perspective on this song. Amazing work to everyone ✌️🤘❤️
I said this on Courtney's One Take video of Rule of Nine's. "If you don't absolutely explode this coming year I will have failed you". I'm telling everyone I can about you and you guys are such a refreshing band, KEEP UP THE KILLER TUNES!!!!!
This makes me wanna write music and quit music at the same time lol how is it even possible to reach this level of understanding what an instrument can do? Magnificent.
It's interesting how I'd heard these parts in the song but hadn't realised that Mike was playing all of them! This is the kind of metal I feel like I've been searching for, beautiful simplicity combined with perfect groove and complex parts when it calls for it! Not to mention how insane Courtney's voice is 🤘
Instructions unclear, I played the song and my garden is still in plain sight..
😂
I'm so mad about that dad joke Jared lmfao

God that verse clean riff is so damn good. Don’t get me wrong, the whole song is good, but that verse is just golden.
I get an Animals as Leaders vibe from it 🤔
Going to be real fun to transpose to my bass! Always loved that part.
@@mattlisch8952 I’ve never really listened to much Animals As Leaders. However I’ve heard Tosin is a great guitarist. Any recommendations?
@@mashpotatosauce3566 all of their stuff.
It must be so hard to play omg....
Mike is a stellar guitarist. It's exciting, technical, unique, and makes me want to move. I just cant get enough of Spiritbox. Thanks for the journey!

0:40 I thought this was a bass riff. But this is still a "Hell Yeah" moment!
Yup, totally thought this was 2 hand tapping on bass until watching this.
Mike is one of those guitarist that, at first glance, doesn't come as "technical" as others musicians. Then you kinda realize the complexity and originality of his playing... Such an accomplished musician.
I'm so happy to see the attention that Spirit Box is getting.
Yeah that's because he's got the the whole song as a whole in mind. No ego. But make no mistake he's got the skills.
You should definitely check his old band Fall In Archaea, it is phenomenal
I call it simple complexity
Considering songs like the beauty of suffering, aphids, belcarra, not to mention older stuff like gift of death from IWABO, I don’t really agree with the first sentence lol
You must not known of Mike before Spiritbox. Checkout his work before he started this band lol
Best album of 2021 IMO. I sincerely can't get enough of Eternal Blue.
That’s a tough call, year ain’t even over and Starset’s Horizons is up there for me for top 3.
I can't choose between this and Erra's self titled. Both are exceptionally well made albums and they both offer a unique experience
Don't forget Landmvrks - Lost In The Waves
100% agree :)
Better than wallflowers from jinjer.. I really loved mooore eternal blue 💙🦋
0:39 that clean riff is a masterpiece
Funny how it sounds like an EMG 81 and some people still complain calling it as "plastic sound"

I felt the same with the ambient distorted soundscapes that they've created 🙌
Shoebox
you probably already have, but you should check out Loathe if you haven't. Sounds perfect for you.

1000%
Insane! I wish that this background guitar at 2:35 was more apparent at the final mix, it's amazing!
Love that dotted 8th delay embellishment at the 2:35 time mark. It's a bit buried in the album mix, but really shines here. If you have headphones/earbuds pay close attention. It's in ping-pong stereo. Really cool.
2:36 gives me goddam goosebumps everytime. Such a sick progression
that little tap tempo delay lead during the "breakdown" is so fucking cool
This is the one I've been waiting for! This song is absolutely M A G I C A L
I bet that’s the tuning they play in
@@SininenKT LOL
@@SininenKT Mike usually uses F#
@@Eyeyamgod No that's the tuning on his 8 string, F# A B U L O U S
@@SininenKTI legitimately thought they typed out the tuning and was like whoa he tunes all the way to M standard
I love these playthrough videos. There are always a couple of gems that I find in the playing.
I haven't had this much fun learning other people's riffs in a long time.
Loving the Eternal Blue symbol on the fretboard. Keep on killing it guys! So happy to see you all making your mark on the scene!
Damn, Mike puts so much into his riffs that it almost feels like he's improvising them on the spot. And he gets so many different sounds of out his guitars. Crazy playing. I haven't heard riffs I loved so much since I first discovered KSE. More playthroughs please!
I literally have no idea how to play this correctly. Those bends fuck me up. Still, an amazing playthrough!
🤔💀
Yeah those bends take getting used too lol
Had the album going in the car on the way home from work today - I had to listen to this song a couple of times on repeat after realizing the song structure was messing with my head. Killer writing.
This song takes me to far away worlds where my pain and frustration are light-years away. A secret garden is the perfect title for this

Been waiting for this one since the single dropped. The riffs are just magic
Now we just need that instrumental album 👀
Ok then. That was insane. I will be seeing this band live the moment a show is within reasonable driving distance. Epic!
