@mutatednut muddy? its the modern sound of the guitar which is the problem. Its just not in your face. specially the complex chords parts. Best tone is one that can be heard.
@@KratosIsSicknah....none of you guys know what you're talking about. Modern guitars can be in your face and stuff like slaughter to preveil and lorna shore prove that. Mike intentionally lowers his guitars in the mix to make more room for Courtney's vocals. It's a delicate balance. Her cleans are very breathy and delicate. But her harsh vocals can definitely handle louder guitars and that's why holy roller guitars are more prominent.
Forget the metalcore, bro. This is not metalcore, this is Spiritbox. A band with so many influences, so rich and so original that call them metalcore is offensive.
Honestly after learning the song it's way easier to downpick that than to try alternate picking it, same deal with the chorus since you need to hit the root/power chord until you hit the chord on the 3rd beat of each bar (and every other beat for the 2nd half of it). He's a smart guy and knows how to be efficient, in this case downpicking was the efficient choice. Not saying that consistently downpicking is easy, it's just that it was the easiest option for this specific rhythm.
As a non-guitarist I just appreciate how much damn atmosphere Mike can pull out of one instrument, without resorting to solos as a hamfisted “centerpiece”. It’s like you can feel the whole sky looming over every track Keep spoiling us my dude 🤘
I remember when Mike played in Fall In Archaea way back in the day. Our little band played one show with them when they came to play in Regina and to see how much he has succeeded since those days is beyond amazing. Always knew he was going somewhere with music.
Gotta echo this, I absolutely loved that band back in High School. Was always sad that they broke up but obviously it paid dividends in the end. I asked them about FiA on a livestream back in 2020 and they laughed out loud about it in shock as if they thought nobody had ever heard of it 😂
I personally like it when he does play throughs because you actually get to hear what all he put in behind the mix. I hope he keeps the ambient sounds for years to come.
He even said personally that he mixes down his guitars so the voice of her wife has more room but his guitars remain strong because his wifes voice can deffo handle them.
I said it for The Void* and I'll say it for this one: I AM OBSESSED. WE NEED TO HAVE A PRODUCER PACK SO I CAN LISTEN TO THE INSTRUMENTALS 😭💙 I LOVE THIS BAND SO MUCH
Favorite detail and have yet to see someone cover it with those included. Missing a big piece of the pie when they skip that. Glad he put it in the playthrough
I can't really describe it, but the guitarwork in this song seems so... perfect. Like perfectly balanced. If I think of modern metal guitar, this describes everything
One thing that makes Spiritbox my favorite band is that everyone gets to shine and you're all proud of it. To do a guitar playthrough that showcases that sometimes you just lay down something ambient while Courtney or Zev or Josh take the lead just shows that no-one is trying to one-up the other and you're all just dedicated to doing whatever sounds the most kick-ass.
The main riff is a monster, but there is so much more texture in this song I completely missed. I love the small details that he adds. Keep it up! -Luis
Damn mikes gotta be one of my top 5 guitarists and writers of all time at this point. There is so much going on here but it all serves the song so well and is so appropriate. Nothing flashy yet so so so many gems hidden within this tune. So good.
Mikes control over the entire mix, and sound is, well- unmatched. He has such an ear for the ambient and every single note is perfectly placed. He would never take credit, but dude is already a legend. Top 5 in the world right now for the whole package. Dude is insane
There's a trend with groups of 5 when it comes to Mike's chimey clean parts. It's in this intro, intro to Blessed Be, verses in Constance. I'm so here for it.
So sick dude, it gets me vibey and emotional at the same time. Jaw dropping! These are my first insights into this band today and its love at first sight!
I respect so much the willingness to just have chugs on open power chords in the chorus. Mike is such a taste guitar player that letting the vocals shine when necessary really makes his guitar work even more impressive when he decides the timing is right to go for it.
As a brand new guitarist i strive to be like this man. His riffs are so insanely good, I cannot get enough of that jaded riff even a month after listening to it lol
I took my guitar and learnt this song as soon as I finished listening to it.. by far one of my 2023 favorite song, EVERYTHING is perfect in! You guys never disappoint us.
Your guys' music has the X factor I think a lot of bands try to imitate or find. The instruments sound intertwined and flows so smoothly. One of my favorite bands of all time honestly because its hard to find
AYO im just now discovering this band and i heard the song but omfg when he was doing that chorus segment i had no clue he was doing all that in one perfect sequence WOW
Only recently really got into spiritbox. A couple of tracks aren't really my vibe but some continue to grow. The new ep is incredible. The perfect balance and just sounds so epic. Fair play spiritbox
I always thought that sort of synth/pad sound was, well, exactly that; a synth or a pad or something. I had no idea that was also Mike on the guitar, that's so sick.
The non-pick playing added a fifth dimension to the soundscape for me on this one. It’s subtle, but it just adds to the ever growing layered cake of sound that is Spiritbox.
@@raviolimaster it takes a second watch, but if you follow his hand, you can see him finger strum, and then when he moves the volume knob, he’s got such good form that he holds the shape in his hand but you can see the slight movements.

Once again, so much of what Mike does gets swallowed out in the final mix. I love these vids cuz I feel like I’m listening to a whole new song
Yeah, their mix could be a little less muddy
dude so true
