I remember doing this same exercise in my freshman year of highschool during my percussion class. At the time it was extremely boring and I hated doing it, but here I am 6 years later doing it subconsciously on my thighs when I get anxious 😂 funny how muscle memory works
I'm a clarinet player, but I've always been a fan of drum line cause I'm in marching band. Sometimes the percussionists let us use their practice pads, so I want to learn this and show them 😁
Thank you for uploading this! I found your channel a couple months ago. I usually spend about an hour a day rewatching this video, doing my best to replicate your movements. I think I pretty much got the hang of it now, I wanted to thank you!
Wow great to hear that! I've got a nice hand workout routine video coming this week to practice singles, doubles and paradiddles. Hope that helps you too!
I'm almost 50 and where my son, he the musician, not me, but he couldn't take his drum set and I've wanted to learn, so this stuff is so great. I'm left handed, but use both hands for everything, so he showed me some ways to play a bit differently. Trying to figure out where I'm comfortable. Since I use both, I have this trouble with everything I do if I have to pick a dominant one. But I'm excited to try these and surprise him with a video at some point :) thanks so much!!!
It's great to hear that you and your son has the same interest! I'm left handed too, but it doesn't matter. I learnt with the right handed set up regardless, and you have advantages because your snare hand, when playing grooves will be strong 😁 all the best to your drumming journey and your son's too Jade!

Great advice for a begging drummer! But something you may want to focus on is making sure that when you play, the sticks that are not playing should stay at set.(hovering just a little bit over the drum) And also make sure that when you play a downstroke, the stick moves into set instead of bouncing upwards then down a little bit. But other than that, the sound spacing was incredible and your technique was pretty good as well, keep it up man!

The style, drum surface, skill level, personal goals are very important in the context of developing the best technique.
Hi, sorry for this late comment' and maybe someone in this section have ever proposed it. It's very very resumed but you could add one thing. For right handed try same exercise begining by left hand. Oh hey it's not wrong to not have the palms point to the floor. It's 2 ways/techniques. Both are equally legit and have their advantages/disadvantages. Thanks!
Something that helped me a lot was finally realizing there is a difference between a double and two singles. They aren't the same thing, it sounds obvious but to a beginner its not. And more specifically i mean, if you are playing two quickly grouped singles its really not a double stroke. To be a double you need to be getting two even or inverted strokes out of a single movement cycle. So you can either use push/pull for faster doubles or a Moeller stroke double for more power. But if you are just cramming two singles together they are still technically singles. To get a really good double stroke roll and to be able to really implement doubles well you need to be playing actual doubles with as much fluidity as your singles. Its just like with your feet, you can either use slide or heel toe (or ideally i always say its best to use both) but if you are just powering out two singles they are still singles and very inefficient compared to using a proper double technique like heel toe or slide. Anyways like I said it seems obvious but even once i was able to play push pull and Moeller fairly well I still hadnt realized that they arent doubles unless your using a double stroke technique to get to strokes out of one movement. I was still practicing my doubles with the occasional single stroke "fake" double lol. But to be clear there isnt anything wrong with playing two singles but if you want a really good double you have to practice actual doubles.
The Traditional Grip!!! In the second part of this exercise you're basically playing a Ruff b'cuz you're accenting on the left hand & then switch accenting with the right & they both should sound the same when alternating hand 2 hand.
Sorry if someone else already commented this, but you should focus on making your Right hand Left hand sound exactly the same too. you should be able to close your eyes and not tell if it's Right or Left hand. sometimes sticks wear out at different rates especially if you're doing lots of Right hand rim shots. Make sure you're hitting the drum with the same intensity in both hands.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ Happy Holidays to you too!!! Unfortunately I'm not a professional just experienced. in college drumline we would start 8's and exercises off the left hand. try to see if you can invert sticking on some passages, but that's just as much a brain exercise as a technique one. lastly like I said, check your sticks because sometimes you either get an off pair or you've cracked one. But just because a stick is cracked doesn't necessarily mean you have to toss it out right away too, but it will effect your playing so just be aware

@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I was on that journey. it was a lot of fun. that was 10 years ago though but an absolute blast. I know there's DCA and independent groups but I have a bad back haha. still love to jam though. cheers man!
A correct double is in the middle of the two. Yes you want to use rebound to allow the stick to return to the top. But then you want to actually play the second note of the double with a stroke of the wrist and not just let it limply come out with a single wrist stroke. If you listen carefully in the video, you can notice that the second note of each double is a bit softer than the first. But it takes significant building of chops to be able to do this at speed. However, it is the way any professional rudimental drummer will play.
My full technique is I use a combination of all 3 (I'm working on developing a longer technique video to explain this). But for beginners, it's more helpful to learn to leverage as much of the available rebound as possible, and let the fingers and wrists work to help achieve that. Then when you've learnt to naturally use rebound well. You can incorporate a finger snap or more wrist/forearm action to increase the power and to help with surfaces that have less rebound or no rebound.

Would you suggest 5B sticks for beginners to practice? I recently bought a practice pad with stand and sticks from amazon, sticks are 5A but I find them too light, hard to bounce.
That's a good indication your sticks are too small for your hands/built. Try a 5B or even a 2B, going to a store and trying the different sizes is the best if you can do that.
I usually get my students starting at 80bpm, the first target to hit is 100bpm. Next target is 120bpm. Next is 140bpm. Aim for weekly progress of 1-5bpm. Everyone is different and some get the technique faster than others.
2-3 times a week for hobbyists, 5 times a week for semi-pro to pro. Also you want to choose a few areas to focus. Getting too spread out doesn't help progress. For example 1. double strokes. 2. Triplet-sextuplet subdivisions. 3. Single stroke could be a good set for the hands to focus for 3 months
I dunno if this was already asked and answered but what kind of practice pad is that. Been trying to find one that I've seen around just cannot find. Trying to find a queut one. Kinda like a head for a electric drum set ya no the soft yet bouncy also basically silent kind. Feels like I'm going crazy cus I know there out there just can't find one. Well still have yet try to go inside a drum store, just figured I could find one online. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it from one fellow amateur drum enthusiasts to another, have a good one and keep rocking
This is a a keo practice pad but I actually don't use this anymore, it's a bit overpriced even though it's more quiet. You can try the drumeo quiet pad. It's cheaper and the quality is quite good with double sided surface for you to play quiet or louder.
This is french grip. I wish back when I was learning how to play drums I learned this technique for doubles. I wish I learned doubles the correct way early on. I know how to play doubles but they are only the way that each bounce is forced and not rebounded.
In order to execute a DS roll correctly the accent (>) notes must fall on the second stroke for each hand (1 AND 2 AND 3 AND. . . not ONE and TWO and THREE and. . .) It is essential to practice at low speeds this way to prevent improper execution at full speed. The rolls sound completely different depending on where the accent is placed.
There are tons of different approaches to doing doubles. I believe the approach you are referring to is the Moeller method. Most of the time if you're able to do them as fast as this most ppl don't really care unless they are a drummer or an aficionado.
Actual beginner practice video, such a rare sight. Keep it up!

A Lotta people don't teach that anymore, mad props
Just the way I do it on a surface that has rebound. But I honestly don't care how anyone does it if they can pull it off and have fun playing :)
Yeah I don't do a correct double
I do individual strokes but yeah I noticed you were bouncing, one way to get the bounce is tighten the top head
I’m looking for two practice surfaces, one quiet and one normal. Would you recommend a pad or two?
What BPM do you have metronome on?
Thx-very helpful
100 and 120bpm. But I highly recommend going even lower to 80bpm first to be able to observe what you do when practicing
Are you using your fingers, wrist or just pure bounce for the double stroke?
My full technique is I use a combination of all 3 (I'm working on developing a longer technique video to explain this). But for beginners, it's more helpful to learn to leverage as much of the available rebound as possible, and let the fingers and wrists work to help achieve that. Then when you've learnt to naturally use rebound well. You can incorporate a finger snap or more wrist/forearm action to increase the power and to help with surfaces that have less rebound or no rebound.
Bonus tip: practice on a pillow to gain more control over the bounce (+strength & dexterity w good technique) when you move over to a drum/pad

I'm playing on a KEO practice pad here
What are 3 recomended Bpms to improve speed and control as you progress, example ( 80, 100 and 120)
I usually get my students starting at 80bpm, the first target to hit is 100bpm. Next target is 120bpm. Next is 140bpm. Aim for weekly progress of 1-5bpm. Everyone is different and some get the technique faster than others.
Roll Breakdown✅
Are you looking for a tutorial of double strokes?
Sir, how many days should you exercise?
2-3 times a week for hobbyists, 5 times a week for semi-pro to pro. Also you want to choose a few areas to focus. Getting too spread out doesn't help progress. For example 1. double strokes. 2. Triplet-sextuplet subdivisions. 3. Single stroke could be a good set for the hands to focus for 3 months

😂 I had to google this
It really does. I’ve been in the yard several times this month😂
In order to execute a DS roll correctly the accent (>) notes must fall on the second stroke for each hand (1 AND 2 AND 3 AND. . . not ONE and TWO and THREE and. . .)
It is essential to practice at low speeds this way to prevent improper execution at full speed. The rolls sound completely different depending on where the accent is placed.
There are tons of different approaches to doing doubles. I believe the approach you are referring to is the Moeller method. Most of the time if you're able to do them as fast as this most ppl don't really care unless they are a drummer or an aficionado.
What bpm are you on so I could practice along?
100bpm. I do recommend going down to 80bpm for first timers too
How do you notice left and right
