The jazz virtuoso tells a wonderful story how he ended up with a vintage Les Paul, signed by its namesake, for one of Spinal Tap's biggest stars.

Julian is the real deal. LOVE LOVE LOVE his style and tone. I personally have never heard anyone like him and that's what makes him a fav.
I'm not a jazz guy but I can listen to Julian all day.
you're a jazz guy
I saw Julian play on YT videos before, yet it's thanks to his interviews with Premier Guitar that I can call myself a fan now. Great dude! Great sound, playing and authenticity. 👍👍👍
I saw Julian in Boston in November. He played the Tele the entire show. What an incredible show. If you can see his live please go!
Such a fantastic guitar player and so interesting both as an muscian and as a person. Wow.
One of the best clean tones I've heard.
Man, I need richer friends
You also need to be as good as Julian Lage.
@@ZillianZilch having richer friends is definitely easier than that 😂
@@sydrose13 Very true! 🤣
You ain't lying
Beautiful soul he’s a blessing
The sustain. Just listen to it.
"I don't hear anything".
I didn't even know who Julian was until I saw the rig rundown. Iv learned about a lot of bands and musicians I now follow by listening to rig rundown and how they talk about their rigs and play them.
Super cool that he got a guitar from Nigel Tufnel himself, must've taken a lot for that guitar to leave his collection but still a hell of a nice axe as well
WOW!!! A very special instrument owned and played by a real master!
He's a great writer/composer, too. And at age 35-, hopefully there's much more to come. Check out Nels Cline 4. That's where I discovered him.
Thats almost like someone giving you a Stradivarius!!
More like a Lesdaivarius
Normally I would mention that he essentially has a luxury sedan around his neck (guitar value), but in Julian's hands I know that the guitar is doing the very best of what it was made to do.
that answers the question. I always wondered if it was a genuine '55 gold top or one of the reissues from the custom shop that he would play live and in youtube videos from time to time.
The sustain!!
I've got a 1978 Pro Deluxe Gold Top, P 90 I played the gold off over a 25 year career. It sustained the notes while I sustained the injuries.
I think the reissues comes with recalculate frets/scale. The intonation is spot on with the stock wraparound bridge.
"look at it, just listen to that sustain (puts his ear against the guitar without playing it). No, Don't touch IT!"
Seriously though; I've been playing (poorly most of the time) for 30 years. I've been repairing guitars and amps for almost 15. It's only been in the last couple years where I finally discovered just how great P90's really are, or at least can be in the right hands. Prior to that whenever a really nice guitar that had them came across my notice, particularly something that typically has humbuckers like a Les Paul or PRS, inevitably the first thought I always had was "damn, what a waste of a great guitar."
It actually wasn't until I heard Chris Buck play one a few times that I really heard what they can do. Prior to that it was either someone running one through a heavily overdriven amp, or I plugged one in to check if whatever work I had done to one of them was working properly. It wasn't until I heard someone who really has some of the best feel and touch play it that I could appreciate just how insanely versatile they really are, and how good they can really sound.
Better LATE than never!
I may sound crazy; but i put some fishman fluences on one of my LPs. I get PAF tones, and p90 tones when using the different voicings with the push pull pots. Vintage gear is great; but there are so many great pickups on the market right now.
@@nickp440 funny you say that because Im going to get a guitar with P90's that I'm going to swap them out for noiseless. If it were normal single coils I probably wouldn't because there's a certain sound I kind and as good as they've gotten, I haven't heard any that do what I want. Since I've never used P90'S, I don't have that bias, and they produce an obnoxious amount of 60-cycle hum.
I had intended on going with Mojotone Quiet Coils; I had them in a Strat I sold years ago and they were the best sounding ones I've heard, prior to that I would have said DiMarzio Area VVs. I worked on a guys Reverend Dirt bike royale that had them in it (mojo's), a 50s in the neck and a hot in the bridge. In a million years I'd never even consider active pickups, but I worked on a PRS that had Fluence classics HBs, and was REALLY impressed. The PAF sound was a bit Treble heavy, but nothing a properly voiced tone control couldn't roll off well. The vintage clear sounded great, and single coil certainly sounded closer to a single coil than any traditional split humbucker would, maybe one of the Fralin Unbucker or Sunbucker, but there you're trading off the humbucker sound.
I didn't even know they had P90 Fluence until a friend of mine was talking about the Greg Koch set. That surprised me because he was always a "vintage only" guy to the point of occasionally getting into douchebag territory with all of it. I haven't tried em yet but I trust his opinion, even with the douchebaggery. I'll likely go with them.
@@DMSProduktions with most things, indeed.
@@timwhite5562 and they make a rechargeable 9V back plate if you decide to go with active pickups. I have the fluence modern humbuckers. the tones i get from them are satisfying as hell
Nice. Mojo axe makes bridges for these. Nice guy.
JEALOUS!
the mojoaxe bridge? I have one on my junior
Wow 🤩
Wow. That 55 has a flatter carved top. You always hear that they're all different. Some with deep "bowls" around the "belly" and others that are much flatter like that one appears to be.
Makes me not as conscious about the top on the guitar in my avatar not being as deep as my Goldtop. They're the same model in a different finish and they just happen to have different depths to their tops.
"This one's called Lick My Love Pump "
Spinal Tap Rig Rundown please!
His playing reminds me of Steve Howe!!
Premier Guitar will have to do Nigel Tufnell next!!!😄😄😄
Jazz goes to 11
So that 1955 Gibson Les Paul guitar is the only guitar that can make your amp properly go to Eleven. The secret it out
The Sound... I hear why it's called ( Stradivarius ) of Guitars ) OMG cool 😎... via H.R.Puff and stuff Freddy the flute of Guitars it's simply magic...? Incredible! Must be in low numbers if it's a 55? Abundance of 54 wraparound bridge/ tailpiece... 55 and 56 tune O matic bridge was more prevalent... 👌 😳
Don't even look at it.
Well done there...
Waiting for the day somebody gifts me a 50s LP.
Till then, i will keep buying more guitars
This thing's gotta be worth more than me as a human being, signed by Les Paul and played by Christopher Guess? Jeez
But can he look at it?
I can't believe he wrote on it.
Look who's wrote on it though.
@@jernwatson2882 I don't care if it was Les Paul himself.
Would agree if it wasnt already a signature on the headstock. Id love to have Les's signature on my guitar
what....where is another hours
but why sign it with a sharpie???
Stop it, Mr. Paul! How dare you make my guitar five times more valuable!
99.99% of the time I'd agree. But look who signed it. This thing has some very interesting history
I guess he was not carrying a spray paint with clear coat along with him.
@@spider7venstring What an amateur.
@@JohannesLabusch Ahh i missed that, lol. I thought Chris signed it!
I like that he uses all types of guitars. He isn’t married to a brand. The thing about guitars is they are all different. Even the same exact guitars, one can sound great and another terrible.
Lord Guest
5th Baron Lord Haden-Guest, member of the House of Lords giving guitars to Yanks...smh😁
But it goes TO 11! ELEVEN!!!
sounds like its tone knob is all rolled off
Isn’t that a £200K guitar?
Here there is the proof that Julian turn on a pedal in a show at least one time . And that is the other nacho tele he talk about in this video
ua-cam.com/video/rhUMUeyrlNY/v-deo.html
Just beware of elevendinitis, Julian.
Some kinda unobtrusive strap lock por favor. Freaking me out
Couldn’t they have just attached a gift label tag to it instead of graffiti writing all over it.
It looks to be a signature from Mr. Les Paul himself to Chris. Not a signature from Chris to Julian.
The word gift is not a verb.
Sadly, it has become one due to it being used as such. Language changes over time.
Pretty nerdy and boring but whatever
