R302.6 Dwelling-garage fire separation.
The garage shall be separated as required by Table R302.6. Openings in garage walls shall comply with Section R302.5. Attachment of vpsum board shall comply with Table R702.3.5. The wall separation provisions of Table R302.6 shall not apply to garage walls that are perpendicular to the adjacent dwelling unit wall.
In our opinion this means the attic access cover should comply with IRC codes related to fire rated materials used in an attached garage.
note this is an opinion only, further research should be conducted.

Id be more worried about tripping on that ladder running out that door
A fire rated attic ladder is only necessary if you have hazardous materials in your attic per the IRC. For instance, a natural gas or propane gas heating unit, perhaps stored combustible products like paint… stuff like that. Each municipality requires a different rating, this means your city may require a 30 minute rating while others a 75 minute rating or more. Your contractor should know this. If not, go down to the city planning or Building Department and pick up their printed guidelines. If they do not have anything printed, and you talk to a building inspector, be sure you get their name, first and last, or better yet have them write down the information and than have THEM sign it. CYA baby… CYA. 😂🤣
Thanks for walking through this!
I guess separating the garage attic from the rest of the house would also work, but getting a properly rated ladder seems to be an easier and cheaper way 🫡
