Description:
The Caretaker by Harold Pinter is a three-act play, the sixth of his major works. It was the first of his successful works, published and performed in 1960. It takes place in a house owned by two brothers Aston and Mick. The house is situated in West London. It explores the relationship between Davies, a tramp and two disconnected brothers, Mick and Aston. Aston rescues Davies from a café fight and offers him a room to stay. Davies is a liar, insincere, selfish and manipulator. Davies makes bad comments about the house and demands money clothes and a pair of shoes for his trip to Sidcup. Aston arranges, clothes, shoes and bed for him. He offers him money as well for his trip to collect his papers left in Sidcup. Aston offers him the job of caretaker. He accepts the jobs, but his crooked natures prompt him to turn to Mick. Aston is quiet, kind by nature. He is constantly on the move in and move out of the house without any purpose. As a young boy Aston was subject to electric shock treatment for mental sickness. The therapy made him unwell. Mick is Aston's younger brother in his twenties. Unlike Aston he is smarter but unstable. He is skeptical of the tramp from the day one. He plays with Davies, confuses him and catches him off balance. Mick is so clever that he also makes curry favour with Davies. Mick encourages him to criticize Aston his younger brother. When the old tramp begins to make disparaging remarks about Aston's sanity.
