I used to fish a pond in Sussex some 40+ years ago for Tench. Fishing worm, nada. Only perch. Change to double red maggot. Tench after Tench after Tench. But strangely only on light float gear (i.e. 16 hook and 1 1/2 lb hook length to 3lb main line and set to 6" over depth with a No1 shot as the tell, tell for the lift method.). As soon as a small feeder went in with the same bottom end line and hook, the fish vanished. And this was fishing at no more than 15 yds and 8' of water to a very small patch of lily pads. Oddly enough, you had to cast over the lilies too. Fish either side and no more than a foot away from the back of the pads, and still nothing. But at the same pond and further around to the side to shallower part of the pond (4' max.) and after raking the swim, it was always worm that would win the day and this was using 6 lb straight through. Even though there were no carp I the pond (Allegedly. As no one I knew or anyone they knew, had ever caught or even seen one from there.), I still got broken on a few occasions as something picked up the bait and no matter what you did, they were unstoppable. Still makes me think even now as to what was lost. C'est la vie... Fish are odd creatures and quite often set in their ways. 🤔
Very humble admitting he was wrong we’ve all been there, easy to stick to what you know, and not adapt to different waters and conditions.always good to learn
Great video, very informative I too can get stuck in my ways and be very stubborn when it comes to fishing but lately I’ve been more willing to change baits and tactics and banked more fish from it👍
Glad I'm not the only stubborn bugger when it comes to rigs. I was slogging it out on a lake last year using a float rod and couldn't get any bites whatsoever even with fish fizzing around my float. I stuck this rig on and landed one within half an hour it really is as good as Duncan says.

Thanks Duncan and great video. I can't wait to give the worm Rig a try. I myself can get reliant on the magg helli rig be good to experiment. I live in NW England and I am struggling to find venues with large tench. Do you have any suggestions please? Thanks.
Thanks, Duncan. Reinforcement of your help last year at the Tenchfishers. Only a 7lb 8oz largest of four this year.
Tight lines. Richard
Glad to help!

Brilliant bait worms weather popped up with air or bunches or chopped on the hook can't beat them.

What a great video ❤
Great video. Do you reckon I could get away with using 8lb mainline for the big tench at ML or should I be using something heavier?
When fishing close sure that rjg would work fished on a inline lead.👍
How many carp did you get with this ?
