Hi! me and one other person organized a walk out when it was becoming evident Roe V. Wade was in danger. The school fought us, sending out mass emails threatening anyone who joined, begging for the organizers to come forward, and offering to “allow” the protest to happen during lunch, effectively stopping it from being a protest. We fought back, supergluing our posters to windows and bathrooms (two years later later they are still stuck there), and amping up our organization. In the end, about 200 people came, we also involved one trusted teacher in the process. The police were called, but they didn’t do anything. we did our business, then returned to class after an hour. effectively putting the school on pause in that time.
Some advice if you plan to do something similar:
    - Alert local news organizations to this happening, don’t use names, but make sure they know. Due to the topic of our protest we also reached out to organizations like Planned Parenthood.
-don’t settle for compromise, know your rights.
-try to involve everyone, even people who you would have thought completely disagreed with you, you might be surprised by who shows up, even if it’s just a chance to skip class. Sure, plenty of assholes won’t go for bad reasons, but give them the opportunity.
-and finally, be safe and make your point

On the flip side, one of the first protests I organized was a student walkout against the Iraq war. The school did not sanction our action and turned out large numbers of staff to stand at all of the exits, which greatly reduced our numbers. Every thing went wrong and we did basically everything wrong. A few of us were suspended, out of line with standard punishments. Here's the thing, it didn't matter, it was still okay. It turns out colleges and future employers don't look down on you for that. We had one of the worst case scenarios and it just wasn't that bad.

Leon, you are absolutely killing it. While I do really love your media analysis and wish we could somehow get that and these videos, but I am just so thankful for you whole heartedly embracing this path for a time at least. Far too many videos from a leftist perspective focus on theory or the less participatory elements of ideology. Your videos have embraced not only forward thinking ideas, but, even more importantly, thoughtful ways to take action in our own lives and communities.
I think this is an especially critical topic. One thing that hasn't changed in the last few decades is that young people are often ignored, pushed to the side, and treated as less important than adults when it comes to their opinions and ideas. Helping young people find constructive and healthy outlets to have their voices heard is simply not a topic that many creators would tackle because it could be seen as controversial or not be as "clickable" as other content, but here you are using your platform to for not only awareness to important issues, but the best real world advice on this topic I could imagine. I hope it reaches all of the young viewers that need to see it.
I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks. I worked in the school system for a brief period many years ago, while not forgetting my own experiences growing up, and know just how unheard and unseen many young people can feel while trying to make it through those often difficult years. I just really want to commend you on your work. Getting to watch the progression of your content over the years has been a real pleasure and whether you have been entertaining, advocating, or informing in some combination, your work has never been anything less than fantastic.

This reminds me of my first walk-out against gun violence! I wasn't allowed to go because both my parents lean closer to the right than me, so I tried to wear a "disguise" in case they were looking for me from things I found in the lost and found. Then I almost IMMEDIATELY got spotted by the local news channel and ran away to avoid being on TV.

OT- History lesson from an old:
In 1968 Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president as the only honest openly anti-Vietnam War candidate. Nixon was the dishonest "anti-war" candidate, and sadly Hubert Humphry was stuck defending the Vietnam policies of LBJ.
McCarthy attracted the student protest vote, who knew they had to act like adults so as to not embarrass their guy, so "Clean For Gene" became their slogan, meaning get a haircut and wear a tie. Also sadly, it didn't work.

Clean cut looks are also part of how the alt right established its so called legitimacy. If a protest movement is still in the talking phase, looking professional can sway people to your side.

i feel like i got super lucky with the school walkout i planned in high school (around the time of the parkland shooting). asked for a meeting with the principal, she agreed to allow it as long as we didn’t leave campus and put out communication to students about doing it safely. we used an instagram page to spread the word, and our county executive even came out to visit the walkout!? wild. my high school was super progressive though (the principal even told me a story about how students did an approved walkout/protest back during the start of the iraq war), so if you think your administration would be willing to allow it i definitely recommend clearing it with them!

My class organized a walk out I believe in 2016 for the police department in our town. They were being shut down and we were being moved to another jurisdiction. While now I don't think I would do anything to support the police it was an incredible feeling when at the designated time everyone stood up and walked out calmly. Few teachers knew the plan at least that we knew of and it was quite chaotic but we were calm and deliberate teachers started to support it.

What about in states like Alabama and such where they are bringing back corporal punishment in schools? Teachers there now have the right to spank and similarly physically punish students, and that would mean they couldn't take such a physical intervention to court.
