John Peels Record Box {Full show}

- Опубліковано 10 сер 2014
- A wooden box containing 142 singles was discovered among Peel's belongings after the DJ's death and subsequently became the subject of a Channel 4 documentary. This used the collection as a starting point to explore Peel's life and musical tastes, with comments from family, friends, musicians and colleagues.
Although the records are portrayed as Peel's favourites and the box as being the last thing he would grab if his home were burning down, the selection doesn't include anything from favourite band the Fall, who had their own dedicated space in his record collection, long-time known favourite 45s like Peter Gunn by Duane Eddy, or anything from personal musical heroes such as Roy Orbison (who, however, did write the Jerry Byrd single found in the box). - Розваги
Simply irreplaceable. Who didn't love John Peel? I took to him instantly as a 10 year old in '78 when my older brother used to put his little battery operated radio on each night as the 4 of us who shared a room used to lie in awe at some of the music but laughed at some of it as well, but we all thought he was just an incredible man and that's a feeling that has never left me to this day. RIP John.
This should be required veiwing for DJ's everywhere.
Fuck yeh!
This'd be the history, archaeology, musicology and fuck knows what else coverage. Way too much to learn from this for it to be ignored.
David Andrews right? Agreed.
Agreed. Once I hear a Peel session. Even if I don't like/never heard of. I listen with a different ear and mind shift.
This should be required viewing for EVERYONE everywhere.
Fixed it for ya 😎👍
R.I.P John, you are and always will be missed ❤
For me John Peel was the only DJ that had real kudos. Listening to his show in the evening (late 70s to early 80s) and recording it on cassette tapes felt like being part of a unique and exciting world. Giving us an awareness of not being alone in our quest for authentic music. Something that ment so much to us as young listeners. We felt at that time alienated in so many other ways from society as a whole. It's no exaggeration to say that he was a true life line. Someone that you identified with closely and regarded as a friend. There was simply no one else that came close to him. He enriched our lives by the music he discovered and played for us. Thank you for this interesting programme of a wonderful man.
I was fortunate to have met John about 6 months before he died at a private record fair in Foxton, Cambridge.
As I was flicking the racks and semi-arguing with a mate about the up coming record fair in Utrecht he interjected with a comment telling us to shut up arguing , it was only at this point we realised who was flicking the racks with us.
With this common bond of record collecting between the 3 of us conversation flowed easy between us all , then my mate suggested a coffee break and all 3 of us sat down at a small table to enjoy the break and examine what each of us had found in the racks ( John had picked up a small batch of entirely 78 rpms) and I enquired to why he had picked them up when he of all people had records thrust his way free all day , every week.
We talked about his Dandelion label , “a disaster” he ventured and I also asked him what he intended to do with his collection when he died (little did we know how close that time was) and I remember him joking that he didn’t know , but he knew that Sheila (his wife) wouldn’t have a clue about the values or historical context of his collection.
One of the best hours of my life and it was made comfortable because of our common hobby.
David Heafield holy shit. Hes such a master and down to earth guy.
The Vinyl Guru ...yeah it was a very interesting and unexpected day , like I explained earlier there was no awkward “what should I say to him next?” lulls in the conversation as the 3 of us just kept our to-be-purchased records passing back and forth to each other for critical judgement by the others . He was asking as many questions to us as we were asking of him , a very natural and flowing conversation between us all.
A true day to remember.
@@davidheafield1436 Sounds like it was in part because you and your friend made him feel comfortable. Nothing like chatting with like-minded people that understand your hobby.
Would have thought they were in his top box as they were relevant at the time ..he would of moved on to the next thing
Incredible piece of musical history David ;D
Fantastic video , without John today's popular music would be way more narrow than it is , a cultural Superhero !
Thank you so much for sharing this ..... John Peel was not only one of my biggest music heroes, but also hilariously funny .. Still greatly missed.
Bill Oddie's single 'On Ilkley Moor Baht At' released on John Peel's Dandelion label is superb.
thanks so much for uploading. this is a really interesting watch
I really want to listen to all of those records; both sides, one after the other.
when it comes to gigantic passion for music , john was the very best of all of us , sonic fanatics !!!
beautiful show...great concept.. evry young musician needs to learn from the past... not the present. look back, without anger... just learn.. and be open to the things that move you - without knowing why they make you feel that.. thing. Instinct refined becomes taste... which eventually can elevate us all and make the world calmer and happier if you let it.
Some of the most interesting people come out of a chaotic life
boring people have boring backgrounds (and the other way round), definitely!
I love that man R.I.P.
John a brilliant guy and would have been so delighted with his beloved Liverpool winning the title for the first time since 1990 RIP John
Today is the *5* year anniversary of when you uploaded this documentary. 🤓
EDIT- 1:11 P.M.: *finishes video 2 hours later*
My horrible internet connection made this for me to watch but I was able to endure it.
One of the very few 'DJ's' [along with Alexis Korner] that I had any time for on Radio 1. Most were a bunch of self-absorbed pricks who wouldn't recognise a decent record if it fell out of the sky and landed on their heads!] But the thing I loved and admired most about Peel - and 'real' DJ's will understand this - was that it was NEVER about him. It was ALWAYS about the music.
And that is why he was never truly appreciated and valued. RIP 'Mr Frog'.
Fantastic
Really wanted to know what was on the "Vocalian" 45 at the front of the box. Maybe the early Bowie single ? Who knows?????
love
Pocket Fishrmen "Leader is Burning". Awesome.
It's a wonderful quirk of history that John should have had a single from the 1950's by "The Gov'nor" in his box, and that Ken played at the 100 Club the same week as it's infamous Punk Festival.
The Misunderstood, even nowadays such a widely unknown gem! One of the finest 60's Psych/Garage bands ever, not for nothing did Peel bring them back to England to manage them. Unfortunately, some of the band members were drafted into the Vietnam War - that being the end of the Misunderstood. In case you don't know them, here's a great compilation of their recordings on the lp Before The Dream Faded: ua-cam.com/video/3x4Wdj_q6xw/v-deo.html
Yeah. Got the LP.fantastic. Rog. Pacific sunset records.
John Peel brilliant pioneer.
What's the first song (starts playing at 0:12, laid back country-ish type thing)? Can't find a name for it anywhere but I'm loving it.
That would be Such a Beautiful Thing by Roshell Anderson
I know he loved The Byrds as I was listening early on! He also played LOVE another great LA band of the sixties
John may u r.I.p. man
Don't forget Dandelion studios, Rochdale and Tractor.
It's funny how they completely condemned Marc Bolan for "abandoning old friend" but at the same time desperately tried to offer excuses for David Bowie when he did exactly the same thing ("it was just a misunderstanding on John Peel's part").
John peels influence was beyond measure.
Plot twist. That was his records to sell box….
It probably was something like that lol
The Big Three - 'If You Ever Change Your Mind' / You've Gotta Keep Her Under Hand'
A documentary called 'Some Other Guys' was recently made about them and it's brilliant!
'The greatest ass-kicking band that ever came out of Liverpool'
'The best band to miss the British Invasion'
'The Big Three were essentially the Anti-Beatles'
'The group that Brian Epstein couldn't control'
'The original power trio'
Look them up, get into them and see the film!
Yeah They were Marvellous,.A Complete Powerhouse of a Three Piece.See them at the Cavern in 1963 and Shorditch Town Hall in 64
We all need a break from The Fall from time to time. Just for a bit.
Alastair Duffy . No we don’t!!!
THE PEEL SESSIONS....YA DIG.
Couldn't the BBC find a decent record player to play John's vinyl on!!!
+MrChase1976 This wasn't made by the BBC. It's a Channel 4 production. Thankfully the 9 minutes of adverts have been edited out.
Careered out the front door? Nah, he'd have gone down with the vinyl, if only to keep them company.
John 'This'll stuff the obituary' :)
Eek a Mouse did a session w Peel. Def worth checking out.
I CAN DIGG IT...THE O.S.T. TO JOHNNY PEEL'S LIFE....MINE IS PRETTY INTERESTING AS WELL.
I'm personally responsible for one of those singles being in the box.
Which one?

The Upholsterers - Makers Of High Grade Suites. The B-side "Pain (Gimme Sympathy)" is the track that got it included in the box.
That’s all the records out of order then and in the wrong sleeves
SALUTE TO THIS GUY FOR BRINGING INTERESTING MUSIC TO THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE A SHIT TO LISTEN!!!!!!!
THAT'S ILL!!!! WHITE STRIPES GOTTA CHICK PLAYING DRUMS!!!!!????? DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
Shame radio one marginalised his show til he was exhausted. 2 weeks before his death he told kershaw this after he remarked how tired he looked. John replied , its killing me ....
ADVICE TO NEW COLLECTORS....BUY WHAT UR FEELING....DO NOT GIVE ONE F@#$ WHO HATES OR DISLIKES UR TASTE....WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY WHERE PEOPLE ARE BASED ON "LIKES OR DISLIKES" THUMBS UP OR DOWN! "DO U ALWAYS"! ONE MANS OR WOMAN'S DISTASTE IS ANOTHER'S LOVE....YA DIG?!!!!
Chow so powerful was fr so far away I england a single guy influenced what was pop music in Los Angeles california radio played in 1979&80the smiths &the cure by being on peal sessions tapes, remember that section in record stores the peal sessions cassettes it was almost a sure thing you’d like it according to the rest in the series,I know by giving a listen &buying just based on the peal name -screaming blue messiahs the peal sessions👍
music is sill shit to this day 2024
Why did the rest the lid of his box on top of his most beloved 45s?. TV crews are a joke.Sorry John they have no idea.
Marc Bolan was a narcissistic user who dumped John as soon as he got big fame.
I BOUGHT A PORTABLE TURNTABLE AWHILE AGO. AND I NEVER USE IT FOR SEARCHING FOR RECORDS...WHY? ONE, I KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR WHEN IT COMES TO DIGGING. TWO, I HATE THE SPEAKERS ON THAT THING! U LISTEN TO THE WORST RECORDS, AND THOSE THINGS WILL MAKE IT SOUND WORSE....IF YOU LOVE RECORDS.... DON'T DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF THE ART OF LISTENING WITH THOSE.
No Steel Pulse? No Misty in Roots?
Well two members of Misty in Roots appear in the show. And you have to bear in mind that "Live at Counter Eurovision" was one of his favourite albums. This is about his 7" singles collection.
The God Father
i used to listen to his radio show, he was entertaining, such a pity he'd played such sh>te
He had big good taste with a tendency to like the weird,Yer some of it was shite.but I still miss his droll wit R I P John
I think you may have misunderstood the point of listening to Peel!
32:26
gorillaz!
31:52
for fuck sake
Sorry John but Status Quo shouldn't be in any record box... Not sure why this box in particular received all the interest ? it's like they are assuming it was his key box from all his boxes ? how do we know this ?
his wife should know
His likes were pretty well known, and really eclectic some I agree completely and others no chance, I remember him talking about this box, and he did like the Quo, unfortunately lol
Conrad Koziol shut up you ingnorant man.
Conrad Koziol , Quooooooo!
There is something fake here. Before JP died he said there was only one group that he kept two titles in that box: Medicine Head, on Dandelion records which he co-started. Twenty by WS??!! FAKE. BTW his widow sold the rights of John and Clive Selwood's Dandelion label recording artistes to conglomerates without permission, so that the owners got next to nothing from their songs and even lost the rights to their own work!! Criminal. And their records are not even mentioned: is it because the famous talkers are so ignorant, which is a BBC ethos of course. Goodnight and good riddance indeed.

COOOL SAVE FOR TH KISS ASS... BUT YER NOT ACTUALLY GONNA GET OWT OTHER THAN THAT...
AH, THE PAEDO'S TOY BOX ..
Fuck off, you plonker!
"What tangled webs..." But did they , of the unmentioned Christian names, manage to kill the spider at all...? And how do they like today's Albion ? By the way , is that other Monty Python bloke getting out as well? I guess they' ve got the money to do so ; they are the lucky ones, with their mostly bad music , blasphemous movies , and DARK humor and all. What harmful thoughtless nonsense though...
