Catching yellowbelly and Murray cod on freshwater shrimp

- Freshwater shrimp is dynamite bait, possibly the best bait that you can use for native fish here in Victoria. It's not just the native fish that love them, redfin love them too and I reckon trout would also eat them if they happened top be in the same waterway.

Hope you don't mind that I share a story or history. I figure it helps nudge the algorithm as well as anything. We have a number of bass species here. Not counting the hybrids the large mouth bass is the king of bass. Fishing them with anything top water is about as good as it gets. The large mouth has a very explosive strike where top water things are concerned. There is a host of artificial for this but here is an old school live bait method. Please note I am referencing times more than 15 years ago so there may or may not be new fish and game considerations. We buy the same mice that folks buy to feed assorted birds and reptiles (pets). So what we did was make a harness of sorts using a rubber band. This way the hook can be held in place by the harness as opposed to hooking the mouse. No weight, just the mouse and hook. They swim, and this attract fish. Now when a bass breaks the surface to take the mouse it is explosive. Sometimes they will come completely out of the water and reach 12"-and up above the water. And a 10lb to 20lb bass breaking the water to take the mouse is about as exciting as fishing can be. I've rambled again. This fishing technique if used after the sun goes down can also produce pike, walleye, and even muskies. Unfortunately without the appropriate leader those species just cut the line like a utility knife or razor knife. I liken this fishing to catching a saltwater marlin or other sport fish except smaller. By the way here grass shrimp are great bait for an assortment of saltwater species. Fun day of fishing mate, even if they were under size, but that doesn’t matter, they’re still fish. I’m thinking of fishing today, but after LOTS of rain the waterway is probably flooding and the fish might not be biting.

Bit of PVC pipe duct taped onto a steel pipe for gardening works great for a strong rod holder mate, even just the pvc pipe hammered carefully into the dirt
Here in Queensland most tackle stores including BigW and Kmart sell pvc rod holders. They're best used in soft ground or sand. Most people just call them rocket launchers. We make our own out of 3 inch pipe from Bunnings. You can also get ones that are a 3 foot length of galvanised rod with two rings welded on one end. Cost about $5-6.
great video Rob! Yeah I thought shrimp were the goto bait for yellas to avoid carp and silvers on the murray; alas last few times I had used shrimp carp, silvers and turtles was all I caught hahahaha!

Hey Robbie.. The bells always have better luck, they always go flying the first tug you give on hook up, or later on in the fight. . Also I seem to get better results from have the net closer to vegetation on the bank. Even better if it grows out of the water. Just a thought. Steven.
Hey mate just a tip that you probably already know but anyway, try using a sinker an swivel and about 50-60cm of leader an hook the shrimp through the tail so they can still move around on the bottom anyway loving the vids mate keep it up.

Those macobrachium are excellent bait. When they get bigger they're good eating too. Up in FNQ and the NT they get bloody big.

Love watching your videos Robbie. I beg to differ on Cod not being a bread and butter fish. I love eating yellas and Cod. I do fish for fun . But mainly fish for a feed. If they are legal they come home. Yellas do love their Shrimp. I've caught more Yellas on Shrimp than Worms , Yabbies and Lures. Cheers
Thanks mate. Cod certainly are beautofil eating fish there's no doubt about it. I would happily keep one from a stocked lake.but prefer to release them in the river. Personal preference. If my old man catches a legal one in the river he usually keeps it.
By bread and butter I meant as in "plentiful and easy to catch". Cod are plentiful, but it's not often we catch them legal size in the river here.
Redfin and yellowbelly are a great bread and butter fish because we can catch heaps, and legal ones are easier to find. I hope this makes sense. LOL. 👍👍

I have only just really got into fishing since Xmas this year and been watching your vids a fair bit and want to thank you as with your help I caught my first cod today, an 80cm and 30 mins later a 90cm! Although the second one took my old mate lure with him after I dropped him when I tried to unhook him :(

Great fishing mate enjoyed it the Yellas were on fire tonight that's for sure I went out the other day in toolmaba and all I got was cod after cod the biggest was 20cm LoL. That's the only thing I have never caught a cod on shrimp for some reason

In this video you said you had problems keeping shrimp alive. What I do when I'm transporting shrimp a long distance is place a frozen bottle of water in the bucket along with an air pump and bubble stone. Using a 20lt bucket 1/2 full of the water you caught the shrimp in, a1lt frozen bottle of water and the air pump is about the ratio to keep the shrimp alive for many hours. Also throw a bit of grass or reed's into the bucket. I've travelled over 4 hours in the car with the shrimp like that and in the end 99% of them are still alive and kicking.

Thanks so much Dave, I've never used ice, but have used an aerator and it definitely keeps them alive. They certainly don't last long without it.

interesting haha i've tried using shrimp in saltwater alive b4 but neve worked so well but for garfish/piper, it was a solid fish magnet. haven't seen a freshwater shrimp in nz but so far in my experience the worm bait proved to be quite effective.

You can use lots of baby eucalyptus leaves and crush them up and put them in the shrimp nets you will catch shrimp

How does this work.
When I go to the Murray , I can catch maybe 20 shrimp in an hour - easily.
How come a cod can't catch those shrimp that I caught ?
I mean , they seem to catch them easily enough when they are on my hook.
Same applies to all the fish in the Murray river

Hi mate, no redfin are not stocked..in fact it is illegal to be in possession of live redfin in Victoria. They sure are a bread and butter fish, but also a pest species in many ways.

So I'm from the U.S. and I've been enjoying your videos. I was curious though, the only fish you seem to keep are the redfins. Even when you catch a legal Murray Cod you throw them back. Do they not taste good?

I prefer to keep Golden Perch (yellowbelly) and Redfin more than anything else.
Murray cod are our number 1 native sportfish in my area. They grow huge and are subject to strict bag and size limits due to their vulnerability and ability to be over harvested.
There is a bag limit if 1 fish per day with a slot size limit if 55 - 75cm. I have probably only caught 2 or 3 legal cod all season, and on all occasions have been quite a long way from my car, without any means to keep the fish cold.
Also, in my area they are wild recruiting, no stocking needed.
I will happily keep a Murray cod for the table, but would rather keep one from a sto ked waterway, particularly an impoumdment where there is a bag limit of 2 because fish stocking makes them much more sustainable.

@@robbiefishing Very interesting. Most of your species of fish are new to me but we have redfin here although we call them yellow perch, and they are excellent tasting fish. I live in Michigan near lake Erie, one of the great lakes so fishing is very popular here.
Robbie how do you decide whether to use a paternoster or running sinker type rig? What factors influence your decision?
Hi mate, I actually made a video about this once. If you search "robbiefishing Paternoster vs running sinker" you might be able to find it.
In a nutshell, I like to use one of each. Love baits are better suspended on a paternoster, especially things like yabbies that can bury themselves.
As a rule of thumb, Paternoster rig can be a bit harder to hook fish, but it tends to result in less deep hooked fish. Running sinker has a better hookup rate, but also a higher mortality rate due to being gut hooked.

They are shrimp not prawns
After the head the body segments of prawns overlap the next one from head to tail
Shrimp, the 3rd body shell segment overlaps the 2nd and 4th and you will see a distinct hump in the back
