    As a child I lived on the adjacent RAF Kai Tak base in the late 60s. Between the base and the civilian airport were some (Cathay Pacific?) repair hangers. When they tested engines the noise was deafening, incredibly loud. often I would leave the base, walk the long way around to the airport and just spend time on the observation deck. I remember when the first 747 arrived there. People flocked to see it, amazed at it's size, taller than the terminal buildings. The landing flightpath went over the "Stinkys" market area just before reaching the airport. At first it was very disconcerting as the jets came in very low to land, but it's amazing what people can get used to.

    ❤My trips were twice a year from the UK in the 80s / early 90s in 747s, but still something of this atmosphere remained. I loved every minute of HK, of coming and going through Kai Tak, the food, the people - the whole experience.

    Ahh remember landing there frequently, late 60s...I have an abiding memory of seeing what seemed like a few yards away, the laundry of the poor souls living in the flats on the approach, and thinking how on earth they they coped with the noise day in day out. It was a hell of an exciting ride I seem to remember. Great days....HK was like a slice of the UK in Asia... really incongruous.... All so magical.

    How crazy is it to think...in the middle of a Cold War, people around the world fearful that the nuclear button could be pushed at any time, with half the world missing, either behind the Iron Curtain or the Red one, with China inaccessible...those of us on this side of all that look back on these times as purely magical nonetheless. A time and a place that no longer exists.

    • @BeyondNarratives
      @BeyondNarratives 2 роки тому +3

      We are back in a Cold War now! So we can get THAT feeling back,while being treated like shit on most US based airlines today. We will never have this golden age of travel again

    • @joelc9439
      @joelc9439 11 місяців тому

      Oh yes.. but back then the nuclear missiles do not have a big range like they do today! Plus, the people back in the 60s and 70s had much more resilience.

    Flew that approach in a Virgin Atlantic B747 in 1994. Having lived in Boundary St in the 60's it was great to actually do the approach myself and see what the checkerboard fuss was all about.

    My old 1965 passport with a stamped mark of immigration revealed, I rode this Convair 880 from South Korea to Philippines Int’l Airport. Just 6 days ahead of the Beatles coming in 1966 July 3rd. Might have been so terrible in the Airport. The Beatles rode Convair 880 from Kai Tak HongKong however as shown in Esquire magazine photo. The Jet-plane was the fastest after all. I didn’t remember the feel and image of the Jet-plane but the fondness the stewardesses had on me as 6 yrs old boy back then 😊

      @Semper Anticus really? Are you unhealthy? Look me up- there's lots of info, including a link to my book on Amazon. Title, “ hiding in a cave of trunks.” Then apologize if you’re man enough, which I doubt but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt this time. Shame on you. Also, I might add, thank you for the opportunity to have free publicity thanks to your remark!

      @chinesefilmhistory6530 The original source is the 1964 West German thriller film "Ein Sarg aus Hong Kong" ("Coffin from Hong Kong"), based on the 1962 novel of the same title by James Hadley Chase.
      Good luck!
