I tried this for the first time two years ago and unfortunately has avoided it because seeing the bottle made me flash back to something bad that happened afterward. I'm happy to write I pushed through that connection, purchased a bottle last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Time heals and this is a very tasty peated scotch. While I favor Port Charlotte 10, Famous Grouse was more enjoyable than the Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 I had last month and the road asphalt-strong Laphroaig 10. For the price, this Smoky Black is a must have.
Nice review! In VA, I can only find Smoky Black in a 1.75 L for $53, which is a bit much to buy to find out if I like it. For the slight difference in your ratings, I think I'll stick with Teacher's as my budget peated Scotch (also $4-7 cheaper).
I think you'll have a hard time finding another peated scotch for under $30. White Horse perhaps? I've heard it and Teacher's compared favorably with one another and it's $30 for a 1.75 L in VA, so I'd be curious to see your review of it!
Just grabbed a handle for 40 bucks. If you haven't tried it it's far from offensive, it's smoother and sweeter than Teachers. Teachers is a classic but if I compared them I bet I'd go with Smokey Black, it's about as smokey as Teachers.
I bought a bottle in North Carolina two years ago and another in Florida last weekend for approximately $25 - $26. I don't know why prices vary so much even from store to store in the same state or town. For example, one store sold the Port Charlotte for $80 while another two miles away had the price under $60. I hope you can find a bottle of this Smoky Scotch for a reasonable price.
I'm so glad ya'll reviewed this scotch. I've been wanting to try it for a while now. I'll definitely be picking this one up.
This is one of my favorites, good job guys!

I very much looking forward to our peated scotch brawl in the future.
