Reaching that level of skill looks like an interesting challenge. Hard but tempting. Too bad I don't have as much time as I used to. But you are seriously amazing.
A little late to the party, but can we just appreciate how the shelling at 1:17 perfectly syncs with Glav’s theme? I’ve rewatched that part like 4 times.
Man... the skill level of this guy... I dont think I've ever even tried to evade with gunlance. I'm lucky if I get my shield up in time or I'm dumb and choose the wrong time to reload. Lol it bothered me that he didn't carve that tail.
Gonna hazard a guess and say that they're probably going for high raw over shelling power, because (counterintuitively) you don't really want to be doing much shelling with the GL
Before mh world and especially Iceborne, gunlances actually could do extremely high raw damage if practiced. Because of this I'm going to speak excluding world and Iceborne. Generally for non-speedrunners and normal multiplayer hunts, playing gunlance in older monster hunter is never about shelling as much as you can, but instead trying to hit weak points with raw damage and shelling when you don't have access to them. For speedrunners in older mh it's pretty dependant on the matchup and the approach the speedrunner took in fighting that monster. In this case it's very easy to stay on top of glavenus' weak points which are extraordinarily high, so raw damage is better here when you are good at hitting the weak points a lot. To sum it up, shelling is just like an extra tool with conditional use because of its fixed damage. For very large openings it has always been extremely good for chaining together hits for high raw damage though.

I know this isn't a LBG run, but figured this is Mai's latest video so maybe he might answer. May I ask why Normal 2 isn't really used versus Pierce ammo? And are there any cases where N2 can outperform P ammo? I'd take any other experienced gunners advice in the comment section as well.
Ever wondering why speedrunners NEVER use shelling for damage? I took the values and made a graphic... The shell power in G is pretty much THE SAME as in High Rank (being average, at best) Capcom developers surely didn't had time to think the values were not scaled correctly. (Imagine, for example, weapons not increasing elemental values as soon you hit G Rank...) I could make a thesis of this of I wanted to.
@@mailbg9704 I can do it decently with ev+1 and obviously better with +2 but it also depends on the monster. Glavenus has very brief hitboxes for example, but zinogres backward tail flip smack can catch you easily
For the life of me, I can't like Valor gunlance - I don't know if I'm just being hot garbage, but it feels like it loses far too much to gain so little in Valor mode. The guard point is nice, but I think I'm just going to stick with striker, guild and alchemy :(
It's the most fun for me, honestly- I just abuse the guard point and full bursts with normal lvl5 shelling. Definitely not the most effective way to play it, though.
It loses nothing tho and valor charges super quick. Everytime I try anything besides valor or adept its not nearly as fast for GL. Theres actually very few mons where striker is better to use over valor/adept
@@mailbg9704 I guess I just need to practice with it more then - I'm perfectly fine with every other style on the gunlance, but Valor is the only one I don't really enjoy as much
The wyvern fire isn't that damaging really, specially if you're not running any artillery boosting skills/hunter arts. Also against a sleeping monster, only the first hit gets the damage multipliyer, and the wyvern fire is split into 3-4 hits, so it's not the best option.
TA rules don't allow traps. There are other speed runs that involve trapping, status and a different kind of tactic. Look up Jer MH for these kinds of hunts if they interest you.
So not a single wyvern blast and sparce shelling. Is that the best way to use valor GL? I've played through half of high rank with it and its been pretty great just full bursting on repeat with a normal shot GL.
Today we learned that Gunlance isn’t a gun or a Lance, it’s an *uppercut stick*
it's an onhand Dragonator
Valor gunlance that is (I play it aerial)
gunlance enjoyer since forever: always has been
Those evade are so satisfying, it looks like you are mocking its attacks
One giant tail swing from Glavenus, One small back hop from Mai.
100% dodge...

Tbh I love this. You knew every move that was coming. That takes so much practice. Thanks for the awesome upload ✨
Thanks lewdna 👀
3:06 i dont feel so good
Mai only want to show us how dangerous g-rank glavenus is
0:28 is mastery. The perfect motion into the smallest dodge? Perfect
Bro he literally pressed one button. The backstep has i-frames too.
Valor gunlance against Glav!
A surprising sight, but a welcome one :)
Great run, loved the hops and guard point
Dude those back hops through every tailspin are i c y
Those back step dodges jesus
ah, such clean evades, simply beautiful

Valor gunlance.. with not much guard nor shelling... ok why not. Seems effective
This playstyle is perfetct for seregios GL
I luv ur videos Mai, if you get a chance you should stream or play with your fans, that would be so awesome but keep up the good work❤🌟🙌
When I do stream its on Twitch, and I basically stopped streaming GU/XX. I'll be streaming more often when Iceborne is out.
Gunlance getting buffed on iceborne i wouldn't be surprised if someone killed galvenus or other monsters fast with it
Adding a GP to wyrmstake and increasing dmg. Idk still prefer valor 💩
The best way to use gunlance is by not shelling... that's sad.
The 180 dodge at the 0:30 mark was so smooth.
No Evade +2 what a God
Can't believe Mai poked Glavenus with a stick till it died
I like how you answered my question in the thumbnail
After seeing this I want to main the valor gunlance

So this is the power of ultra instinct
Eggplant
Are not going to talk about how he never uses wyverns fire
My god you weren't even using evade window... that's all natural...
Valor is good but you gotta have the kusala gunlance
Wow that was epic.😁
can i ask how do you get that glowing bar at the buttom of your screen is that a skill? thanks
I'm pretty new to gunlance and I was wondering why many speedrunners use wide 4 gunlances instead of wide 5?

Why didn't you do wyverns fire when it was sleeping maybe could have killed it with that one shot ?
The wyvern fire isn't that damaging really, specially if you're not running any artillery boosting skills/hunter arts. Also against a sleeping monster, only the first hit gets the damage multipliyer, and the wyvern fire is split into 3-4 hits, so it's not the best option.

I've tried it quite a few times and I can't get a good time... think ive managed 8 mins and idr which style it was
I'm sure you know by now but dodging has i-frames. Time your dodges well and you won't get hit. Applies in all MH
