In this video I show you how to use the free software Seatools from Seagate to repair bad sectors on a hard disk drive (HDD). The process takes a long time, so I recommend using Seatools for Windows first to diagnose the problem. Then if Seatools for Windows can't fix your fault, make a boot disk and run Seatools for DOS instead. I used this approach recently to perfectly repair two broken HDDs of my own with no data loss. In this 6 minute video, I walk through the process step-by-step in understandable English to ensure that this tutorial is accessible for anyone who's suffering from the shock of discovering bad sectors on an HDD or SSD or worse: hard drive failure.

i have a momentus thin 500 GB but it stopped working and is showing 0 GB now .....is it a good idea to try seatools for DOS?
If using SeaTools for DOS and boot up does not show the drive or controller info you need to test, it may be the SATA setting in BIOS is set to AHCI. Reboot to BIOS and in advanced properties set the SATA info to IDE and reboot again.

how to do if the BIOS doesn't have the ide option? mine doesn't recognize the HD, and it doesn't have ide option, only ahci and Raid that doesn't detect

Very useful video! I wasn't aware of these uses of SeaTools. Am I assuming correctly, that SeaTools might be applicable to drives from other maufacturers, too?
Quite correct, Seatools will work with many other brands of HDDs and SSDs, according to the company's statements.

i got a smart failed airflow temperature (! status) on seatools? i dont know what that means but drive seems to be functional, it passed the short test but still has an error status

The Rufus software displays "The image is either non-bootable, or it uses a boot or compression method that is not supported by Rufus" and while trying to burn as per the Seagate process it displays "disk burner wasn't found". Please help me out with this. I do not have any other hard disk and am in need of the one, I'm trying to repair. I'm doing it on windows 11.

Try running Seatools, as per this video. Hopefully it's a logical and not a physical error, and once repaired you should be able to access your data. Back up everything you can copy, then reformat the drive. After that you -could- use it again, but I'd encourage you not to use it for anything critical.
My hard disk isn't showing in Seagate seeatools but shows in device manager is there anything you could help ?

My SSD got Corrupt Master File Table error on ChkDsk run. When I ran Seatools for Windows it PASSED on Long Test and Long Fix test . I don't understand why I still can't access the SSD? It got corrupted when I was changing cases and had to unplug and plug back in the new case. Any advise will be appreciated.
Seagate website and seatools software is offering to create bootable usb of linux version. Should I use Linux or DOS version of Seatools bootable USB? Simply my question is which on is better and more effective?
I have a Seagate Backup plus and a saved system i need for recovery. I was saved using Dashboard which i can no longer access.
Seagate Toolkit shows the drive. I can see the Backup versions with My Pc on the Seagate, BUT I cant get to them using Toolkit.
Can I get back to Dashboard that created them?

My seaGate hdd fall down from a high ground surface. Now, the files aren't showing in my explorer, is there any possible chance of fixing it? Or should I just throw it ? By the way, the hdd is 2 TB.. I hope for some assistance.
If you're lucky, you might be able to recover your lost data by running these programs and/or trying a data recovery program. If I were you, I would copy all the available data onto a new drive as soon as possible, try this repair process, and another one for data recovery, then scrap the drive permanently. Your main objective should be to recover as much of your data as possible and store it on a new drive. Good luck!

Hello, My external USB WD mechanical 500BG drive is making a clicking noise and will not mount. Is it worth trying the Seatools DOS version to try and access my drive? Best regards.
This is not good, if there is a ticking noise the read write arm is stuck. You have to open the drive up and move the arm to the start position. Though the drive will probably get contaminated if you do this....
Though it was worth cleaning the power supply connection with contact cleaner, and try turning the power socket connector - this worked for me.
You have to be careful with HDdrives, they are very fragile. A knock can use that ticking noise.

You can use Seatools with your external drive, and see what it suggests.repairs/recommends. My general attitude towards bad sectors is, once they start to form on an HDD, it's best not to rely on it for storing anything critical.

Yes, this works on other brands of HDDs and SSDs, not just Seagate ones. I successfully repaired a Hitachi HDD for example. Good luck.

I am trying this method on my primary hard disk, does it wipes out all data after repairing? Asking because I don't want to corrupt my OS.
No, this won't format your disk or wipe it.
I have an SSD that does not show up in the bios or via usb dock. Will seatools have any effect?
Tricky one. I would suggest contacting a local expert and having them investigate it for you.
I downloaded Rufus and when I try to burn to a thumb drive I get a prompt that says "The image is either non-bootable, or it uses a boot or compression method that is not supported by Rufus... I tried to do it the way Seatools says, where you save the ISO image and right click burn to disk. That doesn't work because it says a disk burner wasn't found (I am trying to do a USB stick).

Doesn't chkdsk E: /f on Windows Powershell do the same thing way easier?
chkdsk will check if any errors are on the disk and will ignore them so that no more data will be written on that particular malfunctioned sector.
SeaTools should repair them i guess.

Well, it's a boot disc image, so you could technically do it... but you'd have to create a new partition on an existing drive, and flash the image onto it. You're more likely to create new problems than solve your current problem if you choose that path.

tutorial useful but Im having an issue where its a disk write error, I tried doing short fix and it suceded but I still had issues with transfering files as they go from 300 mb/s to 0 bytes or it stops moving and it lags my entire pc even though I have a decent pc Im not sure what to do any help would be appreciated or anywhere I can contact you
I don't have the expertise to offer any more help, I'm afraid. If the data is really valuable to you, you might need to hire a local professional and take your drive to them.

Question what if my ssd is not even showing up in bios but any other ssd i plug works perfectly …should i try this ?
Yes, I would try this process if I were in your position. Please let me know how you go. What were the symptoms before your SSD failed? If any? If it's physical damage, this process won't help.

Testing this if its gona fix the bzz bzz bzz bzz sound coming from hard drive (its pretty old) and i realy dont want to open it. (bz sound does stop when the long run test runs tho)

Mate, you should have shown the CrystalDiskInfo status of your drive before you did all of this. It would have helped showing me a proper before and after picture for my Hard Drive.
Anyways, I have 2 Seagate Barracuda 8 terabyte Hard Disks and I was wondering if I could fix them using this method. Both of them are showing the caution sign.
One has been on for 6679 hours and the errors it's showing is:
Reallocated Sectors count: 880
Current Pending Sectors count: 48
Uncorrectable Sectors count: 48
The other one has been on for 4292 hours and the errors it's showing is:
Current Pending Sectors count: 64
Uncorrectable Sectors count: 64
Do you think this method will work to fix these issues ? Are these issues fixable at all in the first place? Because if you say so I'll back the data from these Hard disks, disconnect connect them to my laptop and use the MS Dos method to do a long fix.

Thanks, the trouble with physical faults is once started, they can easily get worse. If you can afford to, I'd recommend retiring these drives to low-importance use, and get replacement drives in good working order for anything truly critical. So in summary, you might make some short term gains, but these faults will likely worsen over time... so don't expect Seatools to achieve much other than stabilising the disc's logic.

Not that I'm aware of. It's a diagnostic tool after diagnosis, it just makes logical repairs where possible.

Rufus won't let me make a boot disk of SeaTools for DOS, and my PC doesn't have a disk drive, so I'm wholly stuck. Not only does my PC fail the Fast Windows test, but it fails the Long one too. What do I do?
Same, but then I tried offical website seagate and download bootable version it is 165mb approx after downloading just press exe file software will do everything (bootable USB)

Just to update future readers of my situation- my drive was apparently too damaged to recover, but thankfully it was still under warranty, so I just had it replaced. Granted the same may or may not be true for you, but that's what happened for me. By the time I got my data off of it apparently it only had 1% of its sectors in proper working order, so not a moment too soon. Thankfully while the data storage had gone bad, the data hadn't been damaged.

Try running the "fix all long" a 2nd time. Does your drive appear in your operating system? Is your data accessible? If I were you, I'd try and copy as much of the data from it as possible, then dispose of the drive.
it doesnt loads the driver for the support of USB mouse and USB Keyboard. In short we cannot use USB Keyboard/Mouse for this Operation.
Maybe try Seatools for Windows for now?

No, this process just repairs logical errors with drives. Formatting or establishing a new partition structure on your drive will delete your data, but those processes aren't covered in this video. If you have lost data by accidentally formatting a drive or deleting data, you can often recover most or all of it using data recovery software. I recommend Zero Assumption Data Recovery for that.

Yes, it will work with WD drives. Perhaps not all, but some if not most. Give it a try and see for yourself. :) Please let me know how you go.... but remember, this procedure won't fix all faults... for example dropping or liquid can cause irreversible damage.
Doesnt work with WD drives for me. Dont have the option to fix it all and other options missing too.

Not true, I ran Seatools for Windows on a Win 10 machine, and used the same Win 10 machine to burn a CDROM with Seatools for DOS on it. If you'd like me to help please, please provide more detail about your circumstances.
