Flour and some sort of scent is standard. Among the possuming experts secret recipes exist, a scientific trial revealed the only one that made a significant difference was orange essence. DoC doesn't allow some flavours attractive to birds, it's specified on their permits. Dickheads doubtless ignore this, and increasing the risk of bird capture increases the risk of trap bans, Icing sugar mixed in 5:1 ratio was used as a plain standard lure when monitoring (population assessing) to remove the risk of lure flavour aversion.. It attracted ok. Cinnamon is both attractant and bird repellent, it is standard 1080 pellet flavour. The lack of "mass bird deaths" (apart from embedded in the minds of the reliable mates who've seen them along with chemtrails, hidden vaccination problems etc) endorses its value.
I didn't catch many possums but I sold my first possum pelt for $26 NZ in 1974 and the inflation calculator for general CPI says that $26 would now be worth $347 Unreal!
Get into it mate, I remember reading a few years ago some young fella did it for a year around Gisborne(?) and made 50 grand. That's a good chuck of change for doung something you enjoy and helping the environment
Hey mate, can you do a vid on your hammer work? I'd imagine that you'd get pretty good at quick kills. I often don't get the right place and there's eyeballs and blood and gore for Africa and they are still crawling around the place. Hardy little critters, but I'd like to get better so a vid on your technique would be handy. Cheers.
brilliant stuff mate I've been there I'm a bit old now to do this but thinking there is a lot of young people out their that should be doing it and your video will get out and about hopefully
Great vid. What do you do with the fur? That seems easy enough to just pull off. Your countryside is gorgeous. That clear, clean water was beautiful to see! And you are a handsome lil bugger too!
How much is possum fur per kg at the moment and how much do you get per kg/possum carcass for meat? Fantastic conservation work getting rid of these horrid yet profitable animals!
Greetings fantastic posting from you never think of leaving skin on ta cook nice an learn few new bits of them Just wondering what pet food as mates Bucher shop sells possum ones an would lol if they are from some of ya'all hard work
Bro this brought me back to my teenage years…we skinned and pinned them back then though…plucking looks heaps better. Great vid mate thanks🤙🏻 just love the bush.
I have ringtail possums in my backyard here in Australia. Absolutely protected here. I remember seeing a lot about them on my last trip to South Island. They pulled one out at a show and I nearly fell over at the size of the bastard. Those Brushtails are much bigger than the possum I have in my yard. As far as I know we get the Brushtail here in the Blue Mountains, just not at my joint.
The Tasmanian black possum was introduced to NZ and became a pest. Some years ago, this possum was exported to Hong Kong as kiwi bear for human consumption.
Here in NZ the possums get a much more varied, and higher in protein, diet so they grow larger (on average). There is no 'natural selection' for size as too few natural predators.
Been a crazy traveling summer, time to catchup on your vids young fella. Hunting grouse / rabbit season is here always enjoy your lifestyle 👍 74+🍁hunter Yorkshire expat whitetail season almost here too.
Is that custard powder you use as an attractant? Been a while since I've been backcountry in NZ but i do remember a mate suggesting custard powder when we went shooting for them. We'd just disperse it in the air and let it settle in the foliage
Loving the content! Seems to keep improving in editing and videography. Don't know if you've shared it before but could you talk about your choice of shoes/boots and your thoughts on keeping feet dry/managing wet feet.
4 years possum trapping, here’s some boot advice. Grisport from farmlands, good price, excellent boot, but it really is personal choice regarding what you want in a boot. Use the leather conditioner regularly, keeps them waterproof and they’ll last longer. Take your boots off when crossing rivers 😊
Thanks buddy, I’m a fan of minimalist footwear and bear feet. Explained reasons in this vid Filling our Freezer with only Wild Meat 3 ua-cam.com/video/J0EdSVRW1aw/v-deo.html Each to there own though 😊
Just curious mate. Has the population of fresh water koura dropped , or is it my imagination? Haven't seen any for a while. Compared to the 60's. I'm in the South. Just noticed a few likely spots in your video. Normally just see them at night. But what do you reckon?? Cheers for the upload. Quality stuff. Atb.
love your videos. couple of things. whats the powder? some sort of attractant. what price per kilo? fur price? how much for the ute full? I cover the snap traps for rabbits in Oz with paper and dirt. possums dont see the traps? by far the most unique hunter on youtube. cheers
I don't know the legal side of things, but being treated it should be ok to sell the possum fur pelt skins to us in Australia, they sell for $85 each here, much better income than fur and meat. Sad how far they have spread into NZ, but upside is you are allowed to trap them there, here being native we can't and the fur skins are somewhat rare
Yo you should try out bark tanning one day, I've been bark tanning possum skins for a while now. I've tanned about 60 or something now? I made a poncho out of em and it's niiice and warm aye, i've got some south island trappers sending me 30-40 skins that i'll go halves with them, i'll be tanning the lot and making a jumper out of em.
Cool, I've brain tanned a few that turned out OK, and one time I plucked the fur off some and the next day around the trap line i skinned a bunch, brained tanned it and stitched them skins together and made a hoody😂😂😂, never wore it in public coz it would attract to much attention 😂
@@portroyal6886 Should make an entire jumper with possum skins man, it'd be a lot of work but definitely worth it! And I wore a possum clothing I made in public in a super busy market, you get a few comments but nothing major aye.

A bit different to my day. We used gin traps and had to skin the possums and dry the skins . It would take 3 guys to check 100 traps a day and skin them. How do you kill them these days ? Great video mate
LOL I did possum trapping to get through university and I'd just like to say - they look cute but don't be fooled - these are nasty little buggers who eat native plants, bird's eggs and even other small critters like the native Weta and so on. We need to get rid of them - so good work mate - keep it up... and then go onto feral cats...
Bluddy Ripper Video Mate!
In your next video, could you explain your lure/bait, meat market, and fur market? Curious to see how they process them both.

Thanks heaps for making the videos mate, and for the work you do to keep possum numbers down.
Your videos are always so entertaining, to live in New Zealand would be so nice and a change from Australia
Listened to a real interesting talk with Cam Speedy on the radio a while back about the seabirds that used to nest in the Kaimanawa ranges.
Cool vid!
awesome content bro, from a homesick kiwi living in sweden
That brings back a lot of memories Shay

Love the video bro. I’ve subscribed for the pure enjoyment of watching you live the old ways.

110 per kg so still pretty shit considering my area 20-25 possums is a kg
$110/kg for fur, $2.75/kg for bodies

Nice bro, there is definitely a good amount of possums in that block, I see heaps of them.
If i wanted to start a possum trap line myself, can i legally do it in any national park of NZ or do i need special permission. Awesome video bro.
Love to you and the fam bruddah. Hope all is.well
Ever tried possum and venison snags or maybe possum and mutton. ? Would be interesting for sure. Chur bro.
Great to see you trapping and using the resource much better than the government using 1080 poison and wasting resources 👍👍keep it up mate 👍
Great video, nice weather, how many times have you caught yourself? 😂
Thank you bro, don't forget to plug your courses if they're still running
If I were a possum I'd be having nightmares of that motorcycle idling coming towards me

@AquaMarine1000 are u serious. Kiwi bear meat 😂
@eman4013 Yes, I am. It was an export industry about thirty or forty years ago to reduce the possum numbers. Look into it.
