@@ChilliChump I’m in the south now, near London. Rainbow chilli, Zimbabwe black chilli, cherry kiss, and Hungarian Wax pepper. I got them from a seed shop so not sure how old they are, so far the cherry kiss and Hungarian wax have germinated and I knew I was starting at the wrong time but I’ve not developed the bonsai patience yet so sowed a few each of what I have to try inside and will try them again at the proper time of year if they don’t take. Currently inside in a heated propigator and then have one of those plastic greenhouses indoors by a big window. Not idea but seems to be working well with some garden centre chilli plants, developing nicely but plain old garden variety so thought I’d try with something more exotic looking!

really enjoyed that, i have 6 kashmiri plants that I started off on Jan 2nd (I know im early classic over eager). ATM they are on a tv dinner table by the side of my computer on a heat mat and one of those full spectrum lights, Im hoping to put them in a greenhouse in May
Thank you for your channel! 🌶️ I've planted some seeds two weeks ago, they've been standing on a heating mat during that time. They have grown about 5-6 cm tall already, is that good or bad? The first two leafs are very apparent, and I'm starting to see some character leafs emerging... Should I replant them? Thank you very much for your help! ❤️🌶️❤️
Hi Shaun, I’m not sure if I agree with you when to switch on the lighting. I put mine on as soon as I see several seeds have germinated. I find if I was to do it when the first true leaves have formed the seedlings would be very leggy and spindly. I known you can prick them out and transplant deeper. If the lights are on straight away the seedlings are stocky and look stronger. Stefan
I wish I had seen this at least a week ago, I started my chilli seeds last weekend without following any of your helpful hints! I guess I will have to wait and see what happens at least they are in a heated propagator

HI ChilliChump, I'm revisiting this series as last years season didn't work out at all for me, so I'm glad you also revisited the beginner series. Just looking at the videos though, did you see it through to the end? It looks like the revamped videos ended part way through and you didn't carry on the story right up until the sauce?
@@ChilliChump Thats great to hear, I'll be along for the journey and in your FB group. I'm going right back to basics this year I think. Any foolproof varieties you can recommend? I was thinking Jalapeño and Cayenne and maybe one other?
@ChilliChump hi. I've a question, you mention in your video that you use rain water. That's great and I understand and agree 100%. My question is, when you brew the tea, do you use rain water or tap water. And I'm sure this method can be used for many other seeds. It's a great way to help the seeds get going and I'm able to pass that information onto our people in the remote areas of Malawi. Thank you 😊
Thank you I live in Seattle similar climate to yours I believe. Do you have an recommendations for Caribbean peppers like scotch bonnet? Other than what you’ve listed in your video. Thank you again and I hope you have a fruitful harvest this year.
Thanks for your step by step instructions. It is reassuring to see I did it almost the same. Almost.... I use a low nutrient soil to germinate, so that the plants put their power into root growth to try and get at the nutrients. I would have thought that kompost is to nutrient rich for the start. Am I right or am I wrong?
Hi Shaun, do you still do hydro flood and drain system? I have duplicated a similar system but how do you germinate the hydro seeds? Soil seedlings are doing fairly well thanks for the help as ever.
The other difference between birds and mammals for seed dispersal is that birds don't chew up seeds, mammals do. So it's massively more likely that a chilli seed will get through a bird intact.
Hello I know your growing chillies but as I'm doing bell peppers they are sprouting now not all of them but what do I do next I have the heated mat which I have used plus also I have grow lights aswell as I said what would be the next step and beyond it would be appreciated thanks Colin.

Beautiful job! But as you well know, everyone’s growing situation is different, and mine is nuts. I live in South Florida, Zone 10, with months of extreme heat (good for peppers), and months of torrential afternoon rainfalls (bad for peppers). All of my peppers are in containers outdoors, because the soil stinks here, easier pest control, and I can better control soil moisture and feeding (especially during the dry times). All of my mature plants are doing okay, but my problem is seed starting: I don’t have space indoors to properly set up a seedling station, and my outdoor area is far from ideal because of the excess heat and rainfall, even though I do what I can to mitigate the water by covering the trays with a transparent lid and keeping them under other cover. Not ideal, doesn’t work, so… I just bought three small hydroponic units solely to germinate indoors and grow to pee wee size, 10 pods each. They go with the furniture, so my wife “let” me buy them! Are pepper seeds “friendly” to this kind of germination? I read somewhere possibly not, but I’m going to give it a shot anyway because I don’t have any choice. I just “planted” two of the units yesterday.
Depending on the type of lights we use (T4 & T8) what would be a good high distance from the seeds and as the plants grow? I'm so glad I found your channel.
I made this video just for folks like you, all about growlights 😎 ua-cam.com/video/C1cLRhUdfJo/v-deo.html But short answer, as close as you can get to the canopy once the plants have their true leaves.
Hello, very good, thank you for the good explanations. I had a question. I took some pepper seeds from two different bell peppers and put them on aloe vera and planted them. But none of them even sprouted. Their temperature was almost warm and I tried to increase their temperature with the plastic bag. Is the problem with the seeds or the planting method? In terms of soil and water, there was no problem and I even smeared them with aloe vera and of course some without aloe vera. But it did not give any results. Can you guide me?
@@ChilliChump Dear friend, I don't mean your channel! I mostly saw that, they use aloe vera instead of growth hormone. But since your channel is specialized, I asked you to guide me on how to plant fresh pepper seeds without drying them
Hey Shaun! Thanks for the video - very useful for a complete beginner like me. I managed to get my seeds to germinate (result!) but they are growing out of the soil seed-first. Is this normal? Do I need to correct them in any way?

The official start to spring pepper planting has begun! Going to be very enjoyable to follow this series through to some tasty end results in several months. Here there is just now a couple minutes over 10 hours of daily sun, and increasing. Stay Spicy! -Bob...
Brilliant video with tons of helpful; information thank you.
Thanks for all your great effort! You were instrumental in my starting to grow chillies last year, and even though we had a terrible summer here in Germany I still came away with a nice crop of tabasco, cayenne, serrano, poblano, jalapeno and habanero peppers and am on my second go around now. I can't wait for the first seedlings to come through :) Some physalis seedlings are already growing, super leggy though ;D
Thank you for watching Kurt! And good luck with your season!
And just like that the first seedlings poked through after I saw your answer 😄 you're the patron Saint of my gardening efforts. St. Shaun 🍀
Hey Kurt. Do you sell those chillies of are they for your own use?
I live in Germany too and what wouldnt i give for some spicy habaneros.
@@percywikham7936 I'll send you some seeds if you want to grow some yourself :) If not, you'll have to wait until late summer for the harvest but I'll share, sure.
Great tips to start chilli seeds and Great video matey Love it
starting up this weekend thx for the refresher
Planted about 25 seeds a week ago (4 different varieties) after doing the chamomile tea soak, so far I’ve had two germinate, got them in a heated propigator so hoping more will pop up in coming days! Thanks for your tips, got my fingers crossed!!
You going to be growing indoors? That's a very early start if you're in Scotland!
What varieties?
@@ChilliChump I’m in the south now, near London. Rainbow chilli, Zimbabwe black chilli, cherry kiss, and Hungarian Wax pepper. I got them from a seed shop so not sure how old they are, so far the cherry kiss and Hungarian wax have germinated and I knew I was starting at the wrong time but I’ve not developed the bonsai patience yet so sowed a few each of what I have to try inside and will try them again at the proper time of year if they don’t take. Currently inside in a heated propigator and then have one of those plastic greenhouses indoors by a big window.
Not idea but seems to be working well with some garden centre chilli plants, developing nicely but plain old garden variety so thought I’d try with something more exotic looking!
i've used the bubbler/air diffuser normally used for aquariums to condition chlorinated water.
That will certainly speed up the evaporation. However it will won't help if there is chloramine in the water.
Awesome Job on the reboot ( no tech pun intended 🙂 )
🙂 thanks Vito
You will love this ... I have a new lightie appie helping me ... not many youngsters into gardening ... so today in the bakkie we chatting about growing various plants .. I grow sou sou, strawberries, dragon fruit, passion fruit, moringa, pineapples, bananas etc ... the more exotic kind of things .. I was telling him about banana pups then he says he want to start growing peppers ... so I said he must watch this south african living in the uk on youtube called shaun ... he choons me ... hey I watch all chilli chumps videos /// he is frikken amazing .. of course the rest of the trip was spend discussing you and your awesome videos ....🤣🤣🤣
Lol...you just put me back in South Africa, driving a bakkie down a dirt road on the way to a braai
Some great advice.. Subscribed👍
You can use campden tablets (Potassium Metabisulfite) to get rid of chloramine in the water. Very small amount is needed. I do that for brewing beer.
Thanks Shaun. I don't know how I have missed your channel. By no means am I big chilli grower, but super interested for various reasons (healthy, tasty, chickens love it; and I can make natural pesticides with them + JADAM). Your accent had me wondering if you were from around my area... but I see not. Lekker.
Thanks again.
Welcome to my channel! I am originally from Africa, but been in the UK for a while now! Thank you for becoming a Patron too! 🙏❤️
really enjoyed that, i have 6 kashmiri plants that I started off on Jan 2nd (I know im early classic over eager). ATM they are on a tv dinner table by the side of my computer on a heat mat and one of those full spectrum lights, Im hoping to put them in a greenhouse in May
My Kashmiri Mirch seedlings are probably the fastest growing for me this season. They are massive already!
Where do you get Kashmiri seeds?
They are available in my store chillichumpseeds.com/product/kashmiri-mirch/
Thanks for posting this! I'm actually working on a video about peppers currently and I found your tips especially useful.
Thank u. Your the chili king, growing mine right now
Thank you for the way you explain , is just good !!! namaskar :)(:
I aprreciate the work you put into the videos, just found this channel but this is really helpfull.
Welcome to my channel Kevin. And thank you for the kind words
Thank you for your channel! 🌶️
I've planted some seeds two weeks ago, they've been standing on a heating mat during that time. They have grown about 5-6 cm tall already, is that good or bad?
The first two leafs are very apparent, and I'm starting to see some character leafs emerging... Should I replant them?
Thank you very much for your help!
❤️🌶️❤️
I wouldn't rush to pot up. Let the plant establish itself more before you do that!
Always love the videos….I’m at the next step… wondering when you repot from here??and when to pull the dome completely??
My dome is off now. And potting up will be a little while still!
Have thought though of a Chinese diesel heater for your greenhouse or poly tunnel ?
I use a pill box to soak the seeds!👍
Hi Shaun, I’m not sure if I agree with you when to switch on the lighting. I put mine on as soon as I see several seeds have germinated. I find if I was to do it when the first true leaves have formed the seedlings would be very leggy and spindly. I known you can prick them out and transplant deeper. If the lights are on straight away the seedlings are stocky and look stronger. Stefan
I wish I had seen this at least a week ago, I started my chilli seeds last weekend without following any of your helpful hints! I guess I will have to wait and see what happens at least they are in a heated propagator
I'm sure you will do just fine! Good luck with your season!
Another great video Shaun! So well put together. Everyone who follows this series will be a pro by the end of it. Such a nice job. Thank you for the lesson. Stay safe and Stay Spicy - v/r Shane
Thanks Shane. I just hope it helps more people enjoy this wonderful hobby of ours!
HI ChilliChump,
I'm revisiting this series as last years season didn't work out at all for me, so I'm glad you also revisited the beginner series.
Just looking at the videos though, did you see it through to the end? It looks like the revamped videos ended part way through and you didn't carry on the story right up until the sauce?
They will continue this year my friend!
@@ChilliChump Thats great to hear, I'll be along for the journey and in your FB group. I'm going right back to basics this year I think. Any foolproof varieties you can recommend? I was thinking Jalapeño and Cayenne and maybe one other?
@@AM4N18 what about my Piri Piri? I've bread it to be a strong prolific cultivar. Https://chillichumpseeds.com
Great video . Thanks

Thank you 😊
@andybush368 for soaking, I use tap water. No need for rain water at that point
@@ChilliChump thank you 😊
Thank you I live in Seattle similar climate to yours I believe. Do you have an recommendations for Caribbean peppers like scotch bonnet? Other than what you’ve listed in your video. Thank you again and I hope you have a fruitful harvest this year.
The Madame Jeanette is a lovely chilli with a better flavour and similar heat profile.
I've never had an issue with root growth at seedling stage. Just make sure you use plain compost...no additives
Hi Shaun, do you still do hydro flood and drain system? I have duplicated a similar system but how do you germinate the hydro seeds? Soil seedlings are doing fairly well thanks for the help as ever.
Yes, I still favour ebb &flood. For germinating, you can do it in soil if you like. Or just use rockwool cubes
@@ChilliChump Cool thanks again.
The other difference between birds and mammals for seed dispersal is that birds don't chew up seeds, mammals do. So it's massively more likely that a chilli seed will get through a bird intact.
That's a good point.
yes. in our country, a famous chilli named Bird-Pissing Pepper.
Hello I know your growing chillies but as I'm doing bell peppers they are sprouting now not all of them but what do I do next I have the heated mat which I have used plus also I have grow lights aswell as I said what would be the next step and beyond it would be appreciated thanks Colin.
Hi there. I grow sweet chillies too (bell peppers etc) and this series will work just as well for them. Have you had a look at the next video in this series (first 30 days)? Here's the playlist....the videos should help you out!

I've had crazy success in cooling the seeds in the fridge 24h before planting. (4 degrees Celcius)
Hi .. Good morning.. Nice video
All of my mature plants are doing okay, but my problem is seed starting:
I don’t have space indoors to properly set up a seedling station, and my outdoor area is far from ideal because of the excess heat and rainfall, even though I do what I can to mitigate the water by covering the trays with a transparent lid and keeping them under other cover. Not ideal, doesn’t work, so…
I just bought three small hydroponic units solely to germinate indoors and grow to pee wee size, 10 pods each.
I made this video just for folks like you, all about growlights 😎 ua-cam.com/video/C1cLRhUdfJo/v-deo.html
But short answer, as close as you can get to the canopy once the plants have their true leaves.
@@ChilliChump This Canadian Veteran thanks you so much :)
Great episode. If you don’t know how old the seeds are, is there a rule of thumb approach in relation to soaking the seeds?
If you think they may be older seeds but aren't sure how old, then just soak them for 24 hours. It won't harm the seeds
Come to the southwest US. We sure love good spice loving/growing folks.
I've never suggested or recommended using Aloe Vera...you sure you have the right channel?
@@ChilliChump Dear friend, I don't mean your channel!
I mostly saw that, they use aloe vera instead of growth hormone.
But since your channel is specialized, I asked you to guide me on how to plant fresh pepper seeds without drying them
@alitufantv just follow the same process I show in this video
@@ChilliChump I don't have most of your supplies and products that you used. Is there an easier other way?
You don't need fancy equipment. Just soak your seeds in tea like I show...then plant them in soil. Keep the soil warm, and you will get germination.
Is it a must to soak the seeds first. Can I just plant them the way they come strait from package to dirt?
No you don't have to soak. Fresh seeds don't need it at all. Older seeds only need it to help them out, to give better and quicker success
Hey Shaun! Thanks for the video - very useful for a complete beginner like me. I managed to get my seeds to germinate (result!) but they are growing out of the soil seed-first. Is this normal? Do I need to correct them in any way?
That's normal...the cotyledons will be wrapped in the seed shell. Hopefully they will come out on their own...as long as you maintain decent humidity
@@ChilliChump great. Thanks 👌🏼
Can you use the scarification method with any seed? Or is it only beneficial to chilli seeds?
Yes....but some seed types need different lengths of time. Also for some seed types it would be better to use a different method
Can I use houseplant potting mix if Im planning to grow my chillies from indoors?
Depends what has been added to it. I wrote an article recently about this chillichump.com/proven-potting-soil-mix-for-chilli-pepper-plants/
