I was raised by parents who were born and raised during the Depression so every penny was geared toward savings. I was 11 years old when I negotiated with my parents to pay an equal amount of money with me to buy my hope chest. They only agreed to it as an investment. Every birthday and Christmas at least one of my gifts was for something that was meant for my hope chest. Best. Decision. Ever. ❤

@ it’s a wooden box of various sizes that stores items for setting up a future house. Also used as part of a dowry in some cultures.

@ mine contained a set of plates and cups, cutlery, iron, hand mixer and a number of other items for cooking and baking foods. When I moved into a a new apartment, I already a large supply of the items normally bought to operate a household.

@@genealotech Thanks for sharing 🙏 my grandma only bought me and my sisters this kind of things which was really nice in when we moved out but not always fun to recive while a teenager 😂 I do appriciate it more as I get older and understand her way of thinking. And I still have all the small kitchen appliances she got me and I always think of her when I use them.

One thing i have out to be so helpful in reducing impulse spending/buying is that I unsubscribed to all the store emails. I'm a big crafter. I have a huge craft room filled with supplies. I was subscribed to Michaels and JoAnn crafts and many others and I would see their emails and look at them and think I needed to go buy stuff there based on those emails and ads. Since I no longer get those emails, the urge to shop is so much less. If I find I need something, I still have the apps for the stores and I can look and see if what I want is perhaps on sale or if there is a coupon but not being inundated with those ads and emails has been life changing. I rarely ever go to those stores anymore unless I am after a very specific item.

Yes!! This is such good advice. I’ve also unsubscribed to the email ads too. Less email clutter AND less temptation to spend!

The more honest you can be the better … my kids used to say” mom all you have to do is go to the atm and take out money “ in their 30s ( way way to late) they all got Dave Ramsey books for Christmas ! It stuck with 2 of them … 2/4 not bad… 😂

Not bad at all! It’s a hard balance. I want them to be kids. But also want them to understand how the world works too. Still figuring out the right balance but we’ll see 🤣

I think kids learn the best by example. We know people who’s adult children cannot even count money-bills & coins. Taking your kids shopping with you, showing them how to buy groceries on sale or generic to save $$.

We did the Disney Cruise for Christmas when our oldest was 8 and our youngest was 3. They loved it so much, we did it again a couple of years later! We were going to do it again in 2020 and well...Covid said nope.😂🤣 Honestly we had the BEST time and I was anti-cruise before we went.

We’re going to try to save up for it for next year!!! I feel like they’d have soo much fun and I want to do it before they’re out of the early ages ♥️

We pay the kids a commission based allowance 😂 We teach them to save spend and give, but do not share our salary. My husband doesn’t want people sizing him up so he doesn’t want to share many financial details…

That’s great. I love the idea of commission based allowance. I totally understand not sharing salary. Definitely personal preference on that one!!
