    So as you probably noticed in a earlier post I received a package from Seymour Duncan containing a lot of pickups to test. So of course that gave me an idea of comparing them all in a metal test! I'm using the Ola 5 second squirt Axe Fx 2 preset for all the clips just changing the pickup (and the guitar). You can download the Axe Fx 2 preset :

    Why is it, that UA-camrs make heavier riffs only for product demos, than modern metal bands make😂😂😂

    The Alt 8 has more of a single coil sound to it. It was the most different sound of all the pickups.
    Thanks for making this!

    • @zaodriver
      @zaodriver 3 роки тому +6

      I have the Alt 8 and I am pretty certain that he wired the coils in parallel instead of series. The real Alt 8 sound is thicker than the distortion with a slight bit less treble extension and thicker mids below the resonance peak. The best description is a JB on steroids. I love it for thrash.

      @@zaodriver intersting to know I actually thought it might have to do with the wiring but in the context of the video and the sound of riff I absolutley loved the tone of alt 8 in this video. Sounds really nasty.

    I'm honestly feeling the Full Shred Sh-10. As a lead guitarist with an often progressive approach, what best suits me is a versatile pickup with enough punch for various metal genres but not too much aggression to where more melodically played parts and higher notes lose their clarity or become too noisy with distortion. Thus, the Full Shred.

  • @shawnfish3043
    @shawnfish3043 9 років тому +2

    It's difficult to decide on a pickup when you make every pickup sound so damn great... If I spent half as much time watching you play as I do listening to pickups on UA-cam, using my iPad, I might learn something. Thanks man, it's back to the lab again.

    definately the blackouts or the invader. although the alternative trem and the duncan distortion are pretty close. i have one guitar that still has the sd livewire "hmet" humbucker on 18 volts. got it paired up with the livewire singlecoil at the neck position, and it is a killer.

    • @HateRedStephen
      @HateRedStephen 7 років тому +2

      This weekend I had a friend over that scored a '87 platinum series warlock for 70 bucks. the one with the large reversed headstock. we had the bridge pickup replaced by an IronGear metal machine. then we put the DR neon multicolor (rainbow) strings on it. it was a GAY operation, BUTT: 1/4 of the price, and the metal machine can easily live up to any hi gain pickup. the dimebuckers just sound awfully fuzzy, believe me, don't trust the internet, where everything is played through very expensive amps.

    Never get tired of seeking the most dynamic, versatile and warmest sound possible. Dynamics and versatility are all: when I understood it, a whole world opened to me. In fact I looked back and noticed that vintage and bluesy sounds always win in all fields. E.g. Megadeth are a Thrash Metal band, but recorded their best old albums using Seymour Duncan '59 and "Jeff Beck Model", which are Jazz-Blues pick-ups and it's amazing how clear in the chords they are, yet they can be so aggressive as well!

    Arch Enemy only tunes to C standard, Slayer tunes to Eb, Death tuned to D standard, Suffocation tunes to C#, Pantera tuned to E(usually a quater step flat) and D(also usually a quater step flat), Exodus tunes currently to D standard, and the list goes on. Not all Extreme Metal bands take advantage of low tunings.

    Wow that Alternative 8 has a very unique percussive quality to it. Great playing, like always. I bought new Duncans this week, and I listened to this many times (though I did go with the JB), own an SH-6 and I love it.

    • @zaodriver
      @zaodriver 3 роки тому +1

      I have owned the Distortion set and currently own the Alternative 8. The Alternative 8 that I own doesn't sound like that at all. It is similar to the Distortion and JB but with a little bit less treble extension and thicker mids below the resonance peak. It isn't clangy at all. It sounds like he wired the coils in parallel instead of series. I have the seymour duncan triple shot rings to allow for series and parallel switching.

      @leonardsullivan 5 років тому

      @Marvin Henkel - music channel
      Hahaha i completely agree!
      I like the alternative 8 because it almost mimics a telecaster tone.
      In high gain washed out metal, chord definition can be extremely hard to get and those pickups would be perfect for solid chord definition. They were excellent.

  • @leonardsullivan
    @leonardsullivan 5 років тому

    I want that alternative so bad. I know a lot of you dislike it but there are many excellent things that pickup could be used for!
    I like because it IS completely different than the others and has an excellent telecaster/strat type tone but with a humbucker's output.
    For someone who play lot of chords in their metal this would be the ideal pickup so you chord definition would stay solid and not be washed out.
    Also has that awesome, thin twangy tone that you get when you put a five way switch in the second position!
    It sounds SO much like the first Winterson record and basically all Animals as Leaders stuff.

    • @leonardsullivan
      @leonardsullivan 5 років тому

      It just depends on what you are going for man.
      Think of wintersun, he's got an excellent guitar tone on his first album, it was unique because it was a twangy telecaster.
      For those who play lots of chords in their metal that pickup is looks amazing.
      Also, that is an Animals as Leaders tone if I've ever heard it. Exactly what tosin goes for in his rig because it allows you to get each and every note fully separate from the others, if you paly a chord you can hear everything under the high gain.
      With the other if you were to play a chord it would be totally washed out and that's good too for certain things.
      So its all subjective, depends on the style your going for.

    Trembucker is for guitars that have a Tremolo bridge. Hence the name "TREMbucker". A trembucker's pole pieces are a little further apart because the strings are further apart on these types of bridges (Floyd Rose, Edge III, Edge ZR). normal fixed bridge, tune-o-matic bridge don't need a trembucker.

    I'm seeing a lot of comments about the Alternative 8, I can confirm it actually sounds that thin and treble-y. I got one stock in a custom ESP and I took it out after a couple minutes because I just couldn't stand it. Great video Ola, I was thinking of getting a full shred set so it's great to hear a comparison!

    Yeah I agree with you. I'm usually the guy on the other end saying the same thing, lol. I just don't have any experience with alder bodies or floyd rose equipped guitars. I don't have a lot of cash to work with and will most likely be selling this guitar as soon as I get it fixed up. Trying to see what pickup would be more appealing for when I try to sell it.

    I'm so glad you understand my point, which, by the way, can't be so difficult to be understood.
    You said you were addicted to low tuning and that is just what happens to so many, too many people. The same goes on with exaggerated distortions and all that fashion of active pick-ups, while forgetting about real, dynamic, warm, versatile and actually aggressive sounds.
    People need to wake up and to stay away from all those decoys and expedients, which are nothing more than little mirrors for larks.

    I've watched this video at least 15 times. I think i'm going to take the plunge and get a set of Full Shreds. If those don't work out, then I'll try Duncan Distortions.

    Every once in a while there's a riff that makes you pick the guitar up and figure it out ..and gives you more possibilities and more inspiration :) Thank You Ola for that.

    Also, the whole point is to showcase the pickups in a metal scenario, and some of these pickups were exclusively made to enhance distortion. There's no fashion or stupid stereotype for downtuning going on,that's just how the instrument is evolving as time progresses and as bands start to influence each other.The sounds of actives is also subjective,they may be dead to you,but to others it may be rich and full. There's also no rule on how heavy you're allowed to be based on how "extreme" you are.

    I know, mate; I have been listening to Heavy, Thrash and Black Metal since I was twelve. Anyway, thank you, because it is always a noble thing to give someone such good advise as listening to good music and exploring new genres.

    If you're using a Ax FX 2 it doesn't really matter what pickup you're using because you can just dial in what you want it to be. It like ZZ Top, BFG has it set so no matter what guitar he's using it sounds like his Les Paul.

  •  11 років тому

    no, just a different sound than the others pickups. I love it

    that riff gets SO annoying but i appreciate your taking the time to go through all the pick ups and their tones, it really helped. I think my favorite is the invader, tasteful bite with punchy low-mid range that almost borderlines "muddy." too bad i don't have an axe fx to try it out on haha

Distortion trembucker7. Alternative( sounded like a songle coil) terrible sounding but i am sure it has an application

    I like the invader bridge it really has a sweet tone when I split the pickup. Otherwise I find myself trimming the volume just slightly . Sort of fits better with the bass in the mix that way oh yeah I don't have tone knob and there's a massive tone change between 8 and 10

    I agree that maybe some band think that because they play "metal" they have be down tuned, Personally I think if done right and for the right reasons it is for the best. For example , I play in C# standard because i feel like it sounds "darker" since I'm playing with notes that would be flats and sharps in standard tuning, and in D Standard if i want a tighter sound while keeping a lower pitch. To be continued...

    these are all high output pups, better suited for the bridge/lead position, the model 59' is a great neck pickup, gives s nice thick warm blues sound
