  • Join us as we discuss what to do after an NVLD diagnosis with one of our research partner Amy Margolis, Ph.D.
Dr. Amy Margolis is Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology with an appointment in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and an affiliation with the Cognitive Development and Neuroimaging Laboratory. The scientific question she seeks to answer concerns how learning problems are related to underlying deficiencies in the structure and function of neural systems that support learning processes.

Im an adult and have both NVLD ADHD and dyslexia. I wish there was awareness and support back then. Only got my diagnosis of NVLD recently I had no idea what it was.

Starting/doing new things is def a problem for me, an adult diagnosed in my early 60s after a lifetime of wondering what’s wrong with me, getting tested as ADHD and cPTSD in middle age, but feeling like there was something else - or additional - going on. I finally went for a third opinion and some extra testing and eval with a neuropsych, and she ID’d the NVLD.
So when you think you’re being lazy or procrastinating, remember you may be avoidant due to NVLD. Because you may not cognitively register what’s going on; you may feel sleepy, or grouchy, or you get distracted rather than recognize “Oh, this is a new task or situation, I’m uncomfortable.” Because there’s so little treatment or therapy available for adults - like virtually none - we have to figure it out for ourselves.

How close are we to getting NVLD in the DSM?

My DD is diagnosed NVLD and dysgraphia with anxiety, but her drawing ability is very good for her age. She is behind in reading and math per the neuropsychological evaluation, but we homeschool and we have been using Waldorf and Charlotte Mason methods of education which do take more time to develop foundational skills which may be impacting those test results. Our educational specialist has advised she is definitely not dyslexic. She has some struggles with math, but she does enjoy it and doesn't know she is behind her peers which has helped us a lot in this area. She is about a year behind same age NT peers using the same type of curriculum in math, progress is slower and more repetition is definitely required to cement concepts.
How would you suggest going about assembling a team as a homeschooler? We are working with a number of professionals and they have had some communication with each other, but it isn't a team. I myself am a licensed teacher in the area of English with experience in ESL and special education. I also hold a Master's in speech communication and teach public speaking, though my focus is currently schooling my daughter.

What’s “DD”? Some kind of daughter, apparently. Please remember that abbreviations familiar to you may be unfamiliar to others. I’m surprised that a special ed teacher would do that.

How does my 27 year old son gets tested for NVLD? We believe this is what he has but was told he has ADD in middle school. We never felt he has ADD.

Your son will need to have a neuropsychological exam done by a psychologist

I was diagnosed at 58!!!! Via local Behavioral Health Clinic. If he is not insured he can get help via local county office Mental Health advocates .
