I have fond childhood memories of this place and every time I visit I still get that same sense of wonder that I felt as a boy. It was a real pleasure to wind in and out of the quirky cobbled streets and alleys and I truly hope you enjoy the walk as much as I did filming it.
Robin Hood's Bay is a village in North Yorkshire, England which is built in a fissure between two steep cliffs only 6 miles south of Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast.
The village houses were built mostly of sandstone with red-tiled roofs. The main street is New Road, which descends from the cliff top where the manor-house, the newer houses and the church of St Stephen stand. It passes through the village crossing the King's Beck and reaches the beach by a cobbled slipway known as Wayfoot where the beck discharges onto the beach.
The origin of the name is uncertain, and it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village. It is attested to in the early sixteenth century as "Robyn Hoodis Baye" in 1544.
The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling, and there is reputed to be a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. During the late 18th century smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast. Vessels from the continent brought contraband which was distributed by contacts on land and the operations were financed by syndicates who made profits without the risks taken by the seamen and the villagers. Tea, gin, rum, brandy and tobacco were among the contraband smuggled into Yorkshire from the Netherlands and France to avoid the duty.
Fishing and farming were the original occupations followed by generations of Bay folk. Many houses in the village were built between 1650 and 1750 and whole families were involved in the fishing industry.
St Stephen's Church was designed by George Edmund Street and built in 1870.
The Millennium Sculpture carved by David Duncalfe is a stone sculpture of a fallen tree trunk, on which a globe is mounted. Atop the globe is a 'structure' with the year MM and some reliefs as an owl, a boat, portrait of Robin Hood and E.T.
The Old School House was the village primary school from 1897 until 1964 and has provided residentials for schools since 1985.
The former Wesleyan Chapel on Chapel Street was built in 1779. John Wesley is recorded as preaching there on 28 June that same year.

Just love this little town. Wish I lived there. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it 🕊️
We stayed at the white house seen at 1:02:15 with our young family in 2001. It was a series of single rooms linked by a staircase. Now sitting in front of our large flat screen in Canada with quality sound took us back in time. Brilliant.
I love the idea of you guys sat watching my walks in Canada. The internet is amazing! And I'm so happy you enjoyed it 🕊️
I am only 38 minutes in and cannot contain my excitement! Bar none, this is the best and most detailed walking tour of RHB, perhaps of any village! We(from Ohio) always spend a couple nights at the Bay Hotel when we visit England. You have captured the essence of this little coastal paradise. I’ll look at your other videos and see what’s available - no matter, I’m hooked. Ok, back to the teenaged seagull on the steps, and the rest of your exquisite walking tour. Thank you!
You will love all the walks we only came across these videos when we was was looking for some lovely walks he has done a 360 walk that you can pan around and look back on the walk which was really nice we just love all the walks and l am sure you will love them to
I'm so happy you are enjoying this walk. It really is a unique and quirky little village 🕊️
Also, look out for the 'From The Air' drone video of RHB coming soon 👍
@@walktheworldaway Sublime! I thought I had explored the entire village but you showed me even more secret lanes and hidden spots. Maybe in future you can also walk thru two neighboring villages we loved called Staithes and Runswick Bay. No pressure, just throwing it out there. You have an incredible gift for this and I want your viewership to continue growing. Thanks so much for sharing your journeys with the world.
Staithes has been on the list for a while, but I might just add Runswick Bay to that now you mention it 🕊️ @@ancestralvoices1
Hello James Paul, I am writing a little message on behalf of my elderly parents who live in Adelaide, South Australia. I am their daughter and I live in Sydney, but as they are both in their mid and late 80's and they have just found your beautiful channel on UA-cam they have asked if I could send you a little note, so the following is their words but typed by myself.
Dear James Paul, it is with our heartfelt and warmest thank you for your amazing and comforting walks, as we are now elderly can't go to these beautiful places or even get out much these days, your walks have brought us so much joy and happiness, and even a tear in our eyes when you went inside the church on one of your walks that we watched, we just absolutely love coming along with you. Thank you ever so much again and please know you have given us so much pleasure. Best wishes from Terry and Claire. XX
Dear Terry and Claire, thank you for the lovely message. It is amazing to me how a solo walk with a camera can bring joy to people on the other side of the world. It makes me truly happy to know my films are of benefit to you so far away, and I hope you continue to enjoy them all. You have inspired me to keep filming and driving to different places so the channel continues to grow.
Peace and love, Jamie Paul 🕊️
@@walktheworldaway Hello dear Jamie Paul, you certainly know how to make an elderly couple feel special. I read out your warm reply to my parents and they couldn't believe it, that were just so happy. I facetimed them so they could see and read your message too. To say they were thrilled is an understatement. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply with such kindness. I have subscribed to your channel so I can tell them when you have posted a new video and I also watch along with them. Many blessings from Australia 💝💝
It's so lovely that I brought some joy to your parents. I'm so happy for them. Be sure there are many more lovely walks coming on the channel in the coming months. I hope you all enjoy the long coastal walk I just posted. You can see how the Yorkshire coast compares to Australia. Nowhere near as sunny as your country though 😅@@simonedutch1264
Hermosísimo lugar, seguir viendo luego 👏👏👏🇺🇾
Beautiful
Great places.
We watched a short horror movie starting at 01:03:00 🙂
Thank you for sharing and your effort my friend. 👍
I was genuinely nervous in the tunnel as it was pitch black. I used video editing to bring out some of the light for the film. Would have gone further if I could see my own hand 😉
@@walktheworldaway I noticed 🙂
Thanks beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤
